If I identify as an eagle, that doesn't make me able to fly.

And if I identify as a surgeon you're not going to let me operate on you, and if I identify as a hottie you don't actually want to have sex with me, even if you try to be polite and say you do. In fact, identifying as something you are not does not actually make you that thing, it makes you a person who WANTS to be whatever it is you identify as.

I'm sorry, trans people have a very difficult time of it and I really do want to be supportive, but their activists have hitched their wagon to an argument that is logically, philosophically, and scientifically untenable. Rowling is right, and the activists who are currently slamming her are wrong.

AMEN

Concise, fair and to the point. But most of all, true.

I don't even know if there is a right or wrong in terms of her opinion, but I do know she's entitled to it, and whether I agree with her or not, it seems pretty unoffensive to me.

If you were born with an X and a Y chromosome, a dick, and balls, you're male. If you were born with two X chromosomes, a vag, and ovaries, you're female. Those are biological facts, no matter how much you jump up and down and scream.

reply

Sex and gender aren't the same.

Yes, that's what I thought as well, but apparently -at least according to the Wikipedia page for "XY sex-determination system"- there are some borderline cases where this is not exactly true (note that they are referred to as "disorders" and produce of a "malfunction"):

"Variations to the sex gene karyotype could include rare disorders such as XX males (often due to translocation of the SRY gene to the X chromosome) or XY gonadal dysgenesis in people who are externally female (due to mutations in the SRY gene)."

"Humans, as well as some other organisms, can have a rare chromosomal arrangement that is contrary to their phenotypic sex; for example, XX males or XY females (see Androgen Insensitivity Syndrome)."

"Clinical phenotypes in these individuals range from a typical male habitus with mild spermatogenic defect or reduced secondary terminal hair, to a full female habitus, despite the presence of a Y-chromosome."

"Androgen Insensitivity Syndrome is divided into three categories that are differentiated by the degree of genital masculinization: (...) external genitalia are those of a typical female; (...) external genitalia are those of a typical male, (...) external genitalia are partially, but not fully, masculinized."

"Management of Androgen Insensitivity Syndrome is currently limited to symptomatic management; no method is currently available to correct the malfunctioning androgen receptor proteins produced by AR gene mutations. Areas of management include sex assignment, genitoplasty, gonadectomy in relation to tumor risk, hormone replacement therapy, genetic counseling, and psychological counseling."

I presume that this condition is very rare though? That is, isn't it rarer than people identifying as transsexuals?

Strange days.

I'm a conservative, and have been of the opinion for a very long time that gays should be allowed to marry. I mean, they're born that way. If it were a choice to be gay, I'd be against it. But that's the way they are; why shouldn't they be allowed to marry. As long as I don't have to watch them have sex, I'm fine with whatever makes them happy.

A lot of people I debated this point would say fine, but it won't end there. Sadly, they were right.

Now we have People Who Menstruate instead of "women". Here's my question: how is my 95 year old mother identified? She (sorry) hasn't menstruated in decades I'd imagine. Would she (sorry) be referred to as A Person Who Menstruated Originally But No Longer Does?

I think she would be referred to as an old woman.
Rowling was right but....you can't win an argument by being right these days!

MY FEELINGS EXACTLY IF I HAD TYPED THEM OUT.

reply

I always like to use this analogy:

How can a man who transitions to a woman through surgery be considered a real woman when a caterpillar turns into a butterfly naturally and is considered a real butterfly?

reply

Because insects, as far as we know, do not have fascist societies, in which women’s rights are always the first to go.

That’s what this is really all about: controlling the masses through thought control no matter how idiotic and ridiculous and false and stupid it is. The powers that be use the media to creep closer to a totalitarian world order using propaganda and this gender stuff is the perfect vehicle. Get the population to go along with this gender is whatever you feel like being flapdoodle, and they’re free and clear to get us to go along with ANYTHING.

Reread 1984.

reply

Ya can’t change a Y chromosome into an X chromosome.

reply

True, but apparently the expression of that Y chromosome can be muted and lead to a more or less female phenotype (see post above about Androgen Insensitivity Syndrome).
