Communism: a regulated economic system in which the state owns the means of production, sets manufacturing quotas and fixes prices; as opposed to a free-market, supply-and-demand based economy. Private enterprise is illegal. Agricultural land is collectivized and ownership of private property is prohibited. Everything is property of, and controlled by, the state, including the media.
Please tell me which candidate (newly-elected or incumbent) is advocating such a system. People who love to use epithets such as "communist" don't know the meaning of the word.
Communism can not exist. It never has. It can't exist. However, an extreme form of socialism can. However, Lenin never actually said that people in Russia would be spied on with very little freedom, but subjected to corruption of the highest form.
"Socialist" is another term people like to toss around.
Why are things like desiring affordable health care or a living wage with benefits branded as "socialism"? Equal opportunity and equal treatment of all citizens is one of the principles established by our nation's founders.
Equal opportunity and equal treatment of all citizens is one of the principles established by our nation's founders.
Socialism is NOT equal opportunity and equal treatment of all citizens. It’s stealing from one citizen and giving to another. It’s punishment for being successful. Nothing “equal” about that.

You are asking citizens to pay for other
individuals elevated wages and health care. In most cases, those people are completely capable of earning those things themselves, it's just easier to let someone fo it for you. That is definitely a bad thing, and why hard working Americans don't like socialism.
Socialism means everyone contributing to a type of general "fund" that is used to benefit all citizens. There are a lot of services in the U.S. that could be described as socialistic. Our taxes fund the police and fire departments, schools, libraries, parks, roads, bridges and other infrastructure; plus Social Security and Medicare. It has nothing to do with "paying for other individuals elevated wages and health care."
And speaking of health care, how are these individuals supposed to get health care when fewer employers are offering it these days, along with other benefits?
Those services you mentioned are there for the benefit of everyone, including the societal infrastructure needed to have communities, not just the people that don't feel like contributing. If Thats why I explicitly mentioned people that are capable of earning. When someone gets paid to stay at hone and have babies, only that individual benefits, and that is socialism. It seems like you almost conveniently ignored that point. Also, I'm guessing you are unaware, but individuals can pay for health insurance if they so choose. It isn't a requirement that you get it from an employer.
Then those people should improve there skills, hence their worth, and earn enough to pay for it, or prioritize it over other things if they feel it's more important. I can't afford a yacht, but I'd like one. Should you pay for it? Just because someone desires something, doesn't mean they are entitled to it. That motivation is exactly what makes citizens seek fortunes and create businesses and innovations. Without that, you get Russia.
"Then those people should improve there skills..."
This is the typical response I read everywhere. As if it's such a simple solution. Many people are working two jobs just to barely break even, so how can they afford or have the time to go to college? Plus a degree guarantees nothing. Sure, it's easy for someone else to come up with a flippant suggestion like "they need to improve their worth." Reality is a lot more complicated than that.
You are using terms against me that I didn't use, as well as ignoring my valid points, which is the surest sign of someone losing an argument, right after throwing out single instances of improper grammer. I never said anything about a degree, something I think is often worthless. I said improve SKILLS, which has value. A meaningless degree on paper is not the same as skills. I make a good living without a degree, because I have learned valuable skills, , some of which are simply a strong work ethic, which is severely lacking in younger generations. And, for many years I didn't make much because I didn't have those skills fully developed yet. Such is the cost of learning. In that time I went without a lot of things so I could afford the lack of income while my education continued. Now I don't have to, see how that works? Also, healthcare is NOT a necessity, but I do recommend it. People have lived long lives for centuries that didn't have universal health coverage. They learned to save for doctors when they needed it, and they learned to avoid health risks and to treat themselves. If you want more than that, you probably should figure out a way to earn a way to get it, not wait for someone else to give it to you. It's so said that liberals have lowered their expectations of themselves to the point that the concept of increasing your self worth is now viewed as a "flippant idea". It's no wonder that the young generation is failing so badly.
Healthcare is a necessity. Let me ask a simple question. Why is it with healthcare the response is always I do not want to pay for anyone else's healthcare? If that is the case I do not want to pay for other people to have the cops, or fire department visit their home. I have never used the police or fire department in my life. I also have no children so why should taxes come out of my check for other people's kids to go to school? If it is every man for himself I should get to use my money on the things I personally use.
Well we should start by only electing democrats. It won't happen overnight but if we can win the senate in Jan, then its all possible. The democrats will create a system in which republicans will never recover.
1. Add more justices to the supreme court. The justification is our nationwide population has increased in size, so should our courts. This will allow a more progressive stance moving forward
2. Make DC and Puerto Rico states. If this happens, republicans cannot win a presidential election anytime soon.
3. Defund the police. Or to make the moderate democrats happy, call it re directing police budgets. Either way, the police must be restrained on a national level
Democrat socialism will save this country. We will push Biden to the left
I know, democratic socialism is really SCARY!!! You know, public education is a good example of democratic socialism, super scary stuff, man. I mean, the postal system...the horror!!!
A bunch of people wanting their tax dollars to go toward things that actually benefit them in their lives, instead of more corporate welfare and more warring? The very audacity!!
Medicare for all. $15 minimum wage. Free K thru at least bachelor's degree (I realize the critical thinking part is a problem for you). Man, that's some scarrrry business.
Who pays for the medicare? How do small businesses pay their employees without letting many go? How do we compete with other nations when we have "free university" and they still operate on a paying basis, draining off all our most qualified profs?
I guess the defense budget really doesn't matter, as we can be basically crippled with a virus any time someone with a lab wants, but I doubt the War Party of the Democrats is going to take anything away from that. Tax payers will foot the bill for all this pie-in-the-sky and you know it.
I remember when GHWB ran against Dukakis and the RNC ran ads telling us how Dukakis was gonna release mass murderers and invite the Soviets over for golf games. Your talking points aren't even as original as theirs. I also bet you weren't even born yet.
Socialism is a completely different economic and political system. What most progressives are talking about is social democracy, basically our own free market system but with more social programs - i.e. taking better care of ALL our citizens instead of just the ultra rich and big corporations.
Our system of private health insurance is just about the worst one imaginable. No one wants government to actually take over and run medical facilities. All a single payer system means is, you cut out the middle man, this layer of greedy corporate assholes siphoning off money to enrich themselves, and have hospitals and doctors paid directly from a taxpayer fund. That's it. They're making it out to be something it's not.
Let me give Republican readers another example of how privatizing everything isn't always the best approach. In much of Europe the government builds and maintains the telecom networks. Mobile phone, internet, cable TV. So you have a high quality fiberoptic network that reaches every home, from the big city out to the sticks (as opposed to the US where more profitable markets have better wiring and rural areas sometimes have no broadband at all). Then service providers pay the government an access fee to offer their service over the network. Consumers pay a small tax to fund the network and a monthly subscription to the service provider. But when you take it all into account they're paying about a third of what Americans pay, and there are sometimes a dozen or more service providers vying with each other to give people the best deal. Competition right? The healthy competition that's basically absent in our totally corporatized laissez-faire capitalist system, allowing horrible companies like Comcast to screw their customers with high bills and crappy service.
Capitalism is not the solution to all our ills. There's a reason people turned to communism a hundred years ago. They may have created a nightmare of a system in the process, but the problems they sought to fix were very real. We don't want this plutocratic system of big money and bought and paid for government. Becoming Cuba is not a great idea, but neither is the path we're on - somewhere in between is where the balance needs to be struck.
Hell socialism bailed out Capitalism in 2008 if you all can remember when hundreds of banks were threatening to fail so Bush gave them billions of our dollars without any debate.
Oh of course. They're believers in socialism - but for corporations and the billionaire class, not the little guy. Privatizing profits while socializing risk.
Just like they don't really care about running up the deficit. Remember Paul Ryan standing in front of his debt doomsday clock? Didn't stop him from shoveling two trillion dollars back into the pockets of greedy companies and CEOs. In reality all they care about is who they're running up the deficit for. Tax breaks for the rich? Great! Food stamps for the poor, or health care for all? Hell no! That's some socialist bullshit!!! Hypocrisy is the coin of the GOP realm.
Socialism will "engulf" America?! Who gave $900 billion to the banks when capitalism failed?! Bush did! Who gave $16 billion to the farmers when they were being bankrupt by Trump's elimination of their labor and their export partners. Trump did!
America is already "engulfed" in socialism! What we need is Democratic Socialism or socialism for the people like we saw this year where instead of billions going to bankers and the 1%, $1200 went to Americans.
And by the way our freeway system is socialist. Don't like socialism? Then don't drive.
Schools are socialist. Everyone pitches in for them whether they have kids or not. The fire and police departments are socialist too. A homeless guy being assaulted isn't ignored by police officers because they don't pay taxes. Ever had a cop or firefighter ask for a credit card, or an insurance plan, before rendering their services? You don't hear people complaining about that though. Hey man - you think it's just a coincidence fire engines are red? Damn communists! 😳
In a pure capitalist paradise, like the one Republicans claim to aspire to, the "too big to fail" banks would've been allowed to fail back in 2009. Resurrecting businesses that were mismanaged and run into the ground, with public money, is not the Darwinian approach of capitalism. It's pure unadulterated socialism. But it's rich people socialism. So that makes it okay. The only radical thing about the "radical left" is what you pointed out - they want the public sector to serve the common people and not the elite few.
I know you're justa funnin' but the sad truth is, people are taking out huge, capitalist loans to pay capitalist teachers who work at capitalist schools to teach them that capitalism is bad. Maybe they should consider some courses in logic and/or critical thinking instead.
I don't know about the OP, but when I look around I see a nearly total takeover by corporations and billionaires. We're headed toward full blown plutocracy, where the 1% own everything, workers get paid dirt, owing their souls to the company store and grateful for every scrap from the master's table.
But that's just me. Don't see a lot of communism going on.
Communism and plutocracy do have remarkably similar consequences for the average joe, that's true. Some government intervention is needed to keep free markets truly free and competitive. Otherwise they settle into monopolies and oligopolies with a few power players exerting too much control. Excessive government intervention and you kill the innovation and entrepreneurship that powers the market system at its best. There's a balance in between you need to strike.
What we need is a hybrid public-private system. The public sector (despite what most conservatives say) does actually do some things better, and the private sector (despite what some liberals believe) does certain things better than government ever could. I hate to see the purists pushing for all one or all the other dominating the conversation. We need to figure out how to exploit the best aspects of both to create a system that could be stable long term - as in centuries, millennia.
We can't level out income disparity completely nor should we try - but we can reduce the truly obscene level it's reached, with some of the most useless members of society who do nothing but manipulate money to make more money being the most richly rewarded, while those who do the useful work that builds those fortunes not even able to live comfortably on their wages. At a certain point the government is going to have to say no, you can't pay yourself that much and your workers that little. You have to spread the wealth around more equitably. No, we're not letting one or two companies dominate an entire industry. You're being broken up. And no, the purpose of health care is not to make huge profits for insurance and big pharma. It's to deliver health care. We're taking the system out of your hands.
There's a huge middle ground between pure capitalism and communism. Somewhere in there is where we need to be.

The ruling class will just exploit that system. People need to realize there are 2 sets of rules. The 99% will never topple the 1% because they are too afraid to die.

No, historically what happens is that tensions rise until they hit a boiling point and society explodes. Revolting peasants have pushed their way through gunfire and taken down soldiers. If you've witnessed a riot firsthand you realize how this can happen. Enough angry people who want to tear the system down are a scary thing.
But our current elites (like every other arrogant aristocracy in history) have convinced themselves this is never going to happen, that they have total control of the sheep. Like all their predecessors they won't believe it until the mob is knocking down their door. I wonder how many French aristocrats refused to accept what was happening to them and shouted "You can't do this! Do you know who I am?" right before their heads were lopped off? 😳
There are simple ways to do some of the stuff I mentioned. Several countries have laws tying the top and bottom tiers of pay at companies, basically setting a maximum differential (say a factor of 50). In other words the CEO can make at most fifty times what a janitor makes. After that, if they want to, for example, double their own pay they can do it - but they have to double what everyone else makes too. So they only increase their own salaries as much as they can afford to give raises to the whole workforce.
We've only seen a drop in school and office shootings over the past year because so many of those places have been closed due to covid-19.
But I was referring to a general insurrection, not disgruntled individuals going out to kill people here and there. A situation that would start out like the BLM protests and escalate quickly, spreading first through major cities nationwide and then into the suburbs and the country. Every increase in economic inequality, people not being able to afford medicine, or college for their kids, or retirement, or even pay their rent and other bills, while the ultra rich keep on getting richer, pushes us closer to that day. The pandemic has accelerated things. Probably taken ten years off the timetable.
There's still time for reforms to head off a crisis though - that's what happened in the late 19th century, the last time the wealthy elite were trying to take complete control of the government. They backed off and allowed reforms because the rumblings of revolution among the common folk were starting to scare the hell out of them.
You're one of the more level-headed people I've seen post actual solutions, but sadly this isn't what the sheep have been brainwashed to want, and it certainly isn't what the ruling class wants.
The only solution to topple the elite is literally by force at this point, because our entire legislative and judicial branches have been co-opted by Liberal Progressives or technocratic puppets there to spout empty admonishments and pointless censures. And we can completely forget the executive branch doing anything, since it's now occupied illegally by China-backed incumbents.

Calling things "Communist" or "Socialist" is a tired old page from the Republican playbook.
Everyone knows that it is the DEMOCRATS that want to bring Democracy to other nations including Communist ones. Why do you think Democrats want to Free Tibet and defend Taiwan? Republicans turn a blind eye to communism and Trump's best friends are Putin, Xi and Kim two of whom are communist and one is a dictator and former Soviet KGB agent.
They were playing off this hoax since the 1920s. You need to get a new schtick MAGAs, no one is buying it anymore except the cat crap eating toxoplasmosis idiots that rave around and wave MAGA hats.
Bernie would be the best thing for capitalism. Ask the real life version of Gordon Gekko.

Problem is you MAGAs are so ignorant because of what you don't understand. Learn about Cash Velocity sometime.
The OP is up his own ass, for sure. But we're on Biden's board, in a thread about being in the third step of communist takeover, and Biden is about to become president.
Not to mention, Ackbar knows these topics are supposed to be on the politics board, and he still put it here.
What's with all the Ackbars anyway? I seem to recall Admiral Fishhead died. Out of respect to the fallen please stop using his name!
Most people can't stand Donald Trump. Half the ones who voted for him don't like him, they're just such diehard Republicans they refuse to vote for a Democrat. Maybe everyone in your hick town loves the guy - or are afraid that if they admit otherwise, the local brown shirts will show up at 3 AM and burn a cross on their lawn, or something. Travel around a bit. You'll come to understand the "inconceivable" election result. 🤪
Most people cant stand Biden as well, he is a old man who has no idea whats going on. Just a few more days to complain about Trump, better get it all out now!
We've never seen anything like Trump. It's unbelievable that anyone could actually defend that worthless pile of subhuman garbage - oh, and traitor to the United States.
Seriously. I could get up there and act like a childish asshole 24/7, be rude, crude, and obnoxious, do absolutely nothing as far as my job, and apparently at least a third of the American population would love me for it. Sad that so many people have such rock bottom standards for what they expect out of the leaders. Yelling, screaming, and raging is enough for them. Who cares if all the douche bag cares about is himself and his own money and power? As long as the rage is there. Some of us actually do set the bar a little higher than that. I expect far better.
Tired old page from the Republican playbook. They were playing off this hoax since the 1920s. You need to get a new schtick MAGAs, no one is buying it anymore except the cat crap eating toxoplasmosis idiots that rave around and wave MAGA hats.
You lost. Get over it. Make America Free Again!
