How famous was he at the peak of his career?

I’ve always known him from Beneath the Planet of the Apes but I don’t remember seeing him in any other theatrical releases. I see him often in old TV shows such as Alfred Hitchcock Presents so I assume he was fairly well known actor.

I’ve seen him in only a handful of films, but this is the one that I mostly associate him with.

I was a little kid and he was in a show called "Longstreet" or something like that. His character was blind and was a lawyer, detective, or something close.

I also remember seeing him in a TV movie where he was a cab driver about to get his brains blown out and the movie was about his life leading up to that point flashing before his eyes.

He was not that famous.

I think he had a lot of charisma and was "the next big thing" but didn't quite make it. However, he worked regularly, and we are still taking about him over 30 years after his death, so he did just fine.

His Planet of the Apes movie and his 'blind detective' show Longstreet are the only things I know him from (off the top of my head).
