What is wrong with Gary Busey?

Gary Busey is:

Suffering from medical conditions brought on by his 1991 motorcycle accident and what was apparently nearly two decades of substance abuse - Basically he has physical and organic brain damage and that’s why he “acts” in the manner that he does.

Suffering from one or more mental illnesses - Although Busey seems to be able to moderate his conditions sufficiently to remember script lines and to be able to sign deals, he also experiences problems with behavior control and judgment that make him appear to be unstable.

Acting his “shtick” - Gary Busey was fortunate to be involved in the commercial and critical success that was The Buddy Holly Story. However following that success, he began to be used in character, rather than leading, roles. For those roles (such as his turn as a mercenary in the first Lethal Weapon film) he needed to be “deranged” and Busey was able to inhabit that character. Following that, although he had “normal” roles (Point Break, etc) even those roles had an “edge” to them. Basically Busey acts the same way in the majority of roles that he is and that’s become his “trademark”.

There are a combination of things “wrong” with Gary Busey; however none of them apparently prevent him from obtaining some acting roles and from signing contracts to be paid for them.

Gary Busey before the motorcycle accident was quite excitable, a little quirky, and was a diehard party-guy (especially with his lookalike Nick Nolte). He played Buddy Holly with great acclaim, earning an Oscar nomination; and he continued to shine in both supporting and main roles in drama, actions, comedies, horrors, and other genres.

In December of 1988, Busey was severely injured while driving his Harley Davidson motorcycle, he was not wearing a helmet, and he was thrown off the bike. The result was the back of his head hitting the concrete curb, it fractured his skull and gave him permanent brain damage, and his personality went up to 11 in the super-eccentric direction.

The accident made him lose 7 weeks of his life, he was basically a vegetable in a wheelchair and he had re-learn most human interaction such as talking, eating, walking, writing, and more; furthermore the brain damage caused him to lose a filter to his personality.

Over the years, Busey have developed severe mood swings, volatile temper, and certain eyebrow-raising delusions. The brain damage cause him to act impulsively, speak without thinking, and exhibits outlandish behaviors that eventually ruined his career. We’re talking about a guy who got an Oscar nomination at 31 years old (AI Pacino got his first Oscar nod at 33), and Busey ended up doing projects like Sharknado or Dancing with the Stars to stay afloat.

I'll never understand how "writers" can write an entire "article" and put random words is "quotes" through the whole thing.

What is the "point?" If you were an "editor" and went through that dreck and "removed" all of the quotes, it wouldn't change a "thing." So what "purpose" do they serve in the first place?

reply

Quotes make sense on rare occasions... but in this instance the writer should have simply made those words bold as it appears he was just trying to emphasis them and the quotes were over kill.

I can remove all of the quotes from the text and it reads so much better.

Overuse of quotes really grates with me. It's up there with people starting all their answers with "So..." when they're being interviewed in the media. Your version is much better.

reply

Thank you. There are appropriate use cases for quotes, but using them on seemingly random words in a narrative is absolutely grating.

I worked with a contracted group in a corporate environment that actually trained their employees to start their responses to questions with "so." Their rationale was that it made them sound as though they knew what they were talking about.

Ah, that's really interesting! It's still dumb though.

Yes, it's for the simple minded. Corporate America is riddled with the simple minded.

Thats annoying , but 10x more annoying for me is when they END with "so" e.g.
"Why did you leave Ukraine?"
"Well , Russia invaded so ...."

You cant end with SO!!!!!
SO!!! literally means the re are more words coming to explain the consequences of the previous words!

Haha, true!

Traumatic brain injury, IMHO, with damage to the frontal lobe of the brain.

That can specifically cause problems with impulse control and emotional regulation, people who damage that part of the brain can have lifelong trouble with complex tasks, complex reasoning, or the sort of impulsive behavior that is considered unacceptable on most jobs. Luckily Busey is an actor, and isn't required to do any reasoning at all, or behave himself at work!
