Jim Carrey Calls Oscar Audience ‘Spineless’ For Will Smith Standing Ovation

Jim Carrey has something to say about Will Smith’s behavior at the Oscars. While appearing on CBS Mornings, Carrey said he was “sickened by the standing ovation. Hollywood is just spineless en masse and it really felt like this is a really clear indication that we aren’t the cool club anymore.”

Carrey also said Smith should have been arrested but, as host Gayle King pointed out, Chris Rock declined to file charges. “He didn’t want the hassle,” Carrey said of Rock, who was slapped on camera by Smith after the comedian made a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith’s appearance. “I’d have announced this morning that I was suing Will for 200 million dollars because that video is going to be there forever, it’s going to be ubiquitous. That insult is gonna last a very long time. If you want to yell from the audience and show disapproval or say something on Twitter, you do not have the right to walk up on stage and smack somebody in the face ‘cuz they said words.”

When King suggested the incident “escalated,” Carrey cut her off by saying “It didn’t escalate, it came out of nowhere because Will has something going on inside him that’s frustrated.”

“I wish him the best, I really do,” he continued. “I don’t have anything against Will Smith. He’s done great things. But that was not a good moment. It cast a pall over everybody’s shining moment. A lot of people worked really hard to get to that place. And to have their moment in the sun, to get their award for the really hard work they did, it is no mean feat to go through all the stuff you have to go through when you are nominated for an Oscar. It’s a gauntlet of devotion you have to do. It was such a selfish moment that cast a pall over the whole thing.”

I’m finally starting to like this guy.

reply

At least some common sense in Hollywood people. That standing ovation afterwards was disgusting.

reply

I was shocked that lots of people attended an afterparty with Will Smith. That seems pretty tasteless, too.

reply

yes, dancing with him. sickos

reply

First of all, anything that comes out of the mouth of Jim Carrey should be disregarded. This guy is in constant need of attention (it's almost an illness with him) and his time has certainly passed. However, I think he makes a bit of sense here. If in fact this was real, and Rock had no idea that Smith would do what he did - then why didn't Rock file charges and sue? Fact is he would have for sure - if the event was real.

reply

He doesn't really need the money like you or I do. It would probably hurt his image more to sue than it was worth.

reply

Agreed, but he would anyway. He would know that he would make huge bucks off it cuz Smith would settle out of court and Will Smith is phenomenally rich. No way Rock would pass up those kind of bucks - not a chance.

reply

His image would be destroyed, and he'd lose a lot of fans. He has more to lose than Joe blow.

reply

You may be right. It will be interesting to see how this plays out.

reply

jacotodd .....No, this is wrong. The LA police don’t need the green light from Chris Rock in order to “press charges”. If they decide to charge Will Smith with a crime, it’s entirely up to them and the DA.

Chris Rock is simply taking the high road, and it’s by far and away the best move for him to make. I’m sure his agents and trusted advisors have reinforced this with him. To NOT file a formal complaint shows he’s the better man. Shows restraint, compassion and forgiveness. He comes out looking even better in all of this.

If he DID file a formal complaint, it would be a bad look within the industry. And, he’d look like a pussy to the general public.

reply

Im sorry Ripkens but I disagree. First of all I thought it necessary for Rock to press charges for the case to be pursued by the LAPD cuz he is the "victim". IF I'm wrong about that I apologize. Any way you look at it though, there is no way Rock would pass up the big bucks that he could get out of this. If you have been around as long as I have, you come to see there is no "high road" when it comes to money. All the stuff you mentioned is secondary in comparison to the check Rock would get if the event was legit. And again, he would jump on it.

reply

I think you’re going to find you’re an army of one with this particular opinion.

reply

You may be right - so far I've had two replies, both of them in the opposite of my viewpoint. I may in fact be an Army of one, hahahahaahahaha. In all seriousness, we will have to wait and see.

reply

There's already a user by the name of onemanarmy on these boards, let's not make things confusing.

reply

Hahahahahaahahahahahah - good one ducksoup

reply

Pressing charges and suing are different things. Rock may very well still sue Will Smith.

reply

Yes, I believe that Chris ROck will sue WIll Smith if in fact the event in question was legit. If Rock never sues SMith, it convinces me even further that the whole event was nothing but a pre-planned stunt. I guess we will have to wait and see what Chris Rock does.

reply

I think Smith's reputation has taken a serious hit. Most people are praising Rock for how he handled the situation, too, while Smith is being mocked for overreacting. I agree, no need to do more from Rock. Take the high road.

reply

Chris Rock has a ton of money. He still has to work in Hollywood with the same people Smith works with, I don't know if it would be worth the hassle of suing Smith "is there a lot of money in getting smacked in the face?" It could be fake but considering Smith was laughing at the beginning of the joke, I kind of doubt it was. If I was Rock I'd sue just because it's a puss move to surprise someone on live tv with a smack to the face, there is no physical way to retaliate if you are an adult. Smith knew he wasn't getting into a fight and why do I think if The Rock made that joke Smith would have sat in his seat and been extra quiet?

reply

SO you think the event was legit? As far as Rock suing Smith, I understand your point. I think he would have sued Smith, under any circumstances, if in fact the event was real. I don't think it was. I think it was a totally pre-planned stunt.

reply

I'm not sure if it was real or not. I don't think he'd sue if it was real just because of how it looks and the hassle involved. Alienate Will Smith's fans and make it harder to work in the business because of the establishment. Plus in the black community maybe it would look weak, who knows.
But if he did sue I would use the defense that the cuckold made me feel like a cuckold on national tv. Constantly associating Smith's name with cuckold to get revenge for the embarrassment.

reply

Gotcha. Thanks for the reply.

reply

Black people and the concept of snitching are considered toxic in their toxic environment.

reply

He's not wrong

reply

Chris Rock would lose all street cred and look like a pussy if he sued.
As it stands now, he's taking the high road, and people respect this.

He will get his revenge on the comedy circuit. He has material for years, and will probably get the hosting gig at The Oscars next year. Tickets for his shows are also on the rise.

reply

I completely agree with that. It's not like Chris is hurting for money, so why eat the inevitable shit that would come with a lawsuit. On that, Jim's point is to make people accountable for their actions, and let the world know that money shouldn't make you untouchable.

reply

Jim Carrey is often full of complete shit, but in this case he is correct.

reply

Finally..... a sane comment from Jim Carrey....

reply

He's correct.

reply

Thank you Mr Carrey.
