Jim Carrey Calls Oscar Audience ‘Spineless’ For Will Smith Standing Ovation

Jim Carrey has something to say about Will Smith’s behavior at the Oscars. While appearing on CBS Mornings, Carrey said he was “sickened by the standing ovation. Hollywood is just spineless en masse and it really felt like this is a really clear indication that we aren’t the cool club anymore.”

Carrey also said Smith should have been arrested but, as host Gayle King pointed out, Chris Rock declined to file charges. “He didn’t want the hassle,” Carrey said of Rock, who was slapped on camera by Smith after the comedian made a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith’s appearance. “I’d have announced this morning that I was suing Will for 200 million dollars because that video is going to be there forever, it’s going to be ubiquitous. That insult is gonna last a very long time. If you want to yell from the audience and show disapproval or say something on Twitter, you do not have the right to walk up on stage and smack somebody in the face ‘cuz they said words.”

When King suggested the incident “escalated,” Carrey cut her off by saying “It didn’t escalate, it came out of nowhere because Will has something going on inside him that’s frustrated.”

“I wish him the best, I really do,” he continued. “I don’t have anything against Will Smith. He’s done great things. But that was not a good moment. It cast a pall over everybody’s shining moment. A lot of people worked really hard to get to that place. And to have their moment in the sun, to get their award for the really hard work they did, it is no mean feat to go through all the stuff you have to go through when you are nominated for an Oscar. It’s a gauntlet of devotion you have to do. It was such a selfish moment that cast a pall over the whole thing.”

Thank you Jim Carrey. No one else has said it better.

I generally agree although saying "cuz they said words" is oversimplifying it. Words can still be very harmful and offensive and I believe you can cross a line with them to a point in which it could at least become understandable for a person to react in such a way. I'm not saying it is here because Smith was very much in the wrong with his actions, at a joke that could have been disapproved of another way, like Carrey already says.

Yes they can but that doesn't give you right to hit and assault people.

reply

No it doesn't, but as I say, they could if offensive enough make it somewhat more relatable for someone to hit a person saying them. Not in this instance however as it was just a rather lame and tame joke.

"You know what's more destructive than a nuclear bomb? Words"

I completely agree with Carrey here.

To play devil's advocate for a moment...:

you agree with a man who gave his ex multiple STD'S, got her into drugs, ruined her life because of it which led to her suicide & now her mother is suing him for it? you agree with a man who's been known for being a menace on set? you agree with a man who forcefully kissed a woman without her consent on stage? you agree with a man who did the same thing to will smith except will actually pushed him off of him? you agree with a man who believes vaccines causes autism & posted autistic children having meltdowns without parents consent as proof? you agree with a man who constantly chooses violence over & over again, whether its sexual, verbal, physical, psychological violence. he is not the arbitrator of good behavior. if anyone should know what it's like to lose ur cool, it should be him. the fucking audacity of him to villainize will smith like this.

Lol, so many accusations in that comment. The wrongful death lawsuit against Carrey was dismissed in 2018.

Obviously Carrey's made mistakes in his life but he was asked about what he thought of the Will Smith slap whilst promoting Sonic 2 and he was spot on. It was assault and the guy who committed it got a standing ovation moments later. Digging up dirt on Carrey doesn't change that fact. Also he doesn't 'villainize' Will Smith he said "“I don’t have anything against Will Smith. He’s done great things. But that was not a good moment. It cast a pall over everybody’s shining moment.”
