Is Ron Howard overrated as a filmmaker?

He's not a horrible director but he's most certainly bland and uninspired. His movies have no real voice or artistic vision to them, and he more or less just bends over for the studio. Granted, not every director needs to be a David Lynch type to be good, but folks like Wolfgang Petersen and Alan Parker are certainly better as far as the work-for-hire, journeyman type directors go. Ron Howard isn't god awful, he's just lame.

With that said though, I haven't heard anyone hold him in particularly high regard either. Most seem to agree that he's a middle-of-the-road journeyman, so I suppose he isn't technically overrated (not by general movie fans, at least). Maybe among industry players he is, as he's one of the most frequently sought after guys for big studio projects. Among us folks who actually appreciate the art of film, though, I don't think anyone really cares for Ron Howard.

Some of his films appeals to pedophiles so yeah.

Definitely middle of the road with some decent hits. Milquetoast director.

He makes traditional type movies, which in this bland age dominated by caped mental cases in the mainstream, and misfit teens in independents, is a good place to escape.

Nah No way. He's a good director. Willow, Parenthood, Backdraft, Far & Away, Apollo 13, Ransom, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, The Dilemma, In the Heart of the Sea.
