I miss IMDB boards. MovieChat has TOO FEW users but Reddit has TOO MANY!

I thought IMDB was just the right amount of commentary on Movies/TV (minus the trolls).

MovieChat is < 10% of the content that IMDB had, so I've tried Reddit as a replacement and the responses just go ON AND ON AND ON AND ON....... way Too much content. People don't bother actually READING the other responses before repeating EXACTLY the same answer, jfc, that is not a meaningful contribution. It just means you think everyone cares what YOU have to say, even if it's already been said 10 times before.

Reddit has a LIKE button and MANY people use it. (would help here too)... but WAY TOO MANY people make a useless comment like "Yes I thought so too"... that adds NOTHING to the conversation but takes up space, and takes time to scroll past. So frustrating. Not enough constructive commentary.

I wish there were a happy medium.

I've searched the galaxy for years and this is as close as we're going to get to IMDb.

I agree with you about Reddit. It's pure chaos.

reply

I love that the format here is nearly identical to what IMDB had. I feel right at home.

Reddit is a mess. I respect and appreciate the volume of responses they get, but the exact same commentary is repeated 7 times under:

/r movies
/r {movie name}
/r Netflix
/r Entertainment
/r TodayIlearned
/r {actor name}
etc. etc. etc.

reply

The movie specific boards separate it from other movie boards.

reply

Too many activists on Reddit.

reply

This place has never been any where near as active as IMDb, but lately the trolls here have somewhat taken over, and it seems to have slowed down again.

reply

As troll flypaper apparently, it seems busy as ever to me.

reply

The trolls are easy to spot and easily ignored Amiga. Don’t bother to respond, move it along, the bums leave pretty quickly if they get no attention.
Losers with daddy/mommy issues lol.

reply

IMDB had very active boards a huge crowd, this is true. We will likely never beat that traffic.

But the quality of our regular contributors here on MC is such that it feels like a small, cozy neighborhood. I love the posters and they seem willing to put up with my nonsense so I will stay right here with good people.

reply

Reddit is an absolute toilet. Everyone’s just farming for likes, nobody reads each other’s posts, and if you dare to mention the issue of the decade concerning movies - woke - you get immediately censored and banned.

Moviechat is much better, especially because it preserves the old iMDB threads and has a separate board for each film.

That said, this place is almost a ghost-town when it comes to film boards, and there are only a handful of regular posters who are intelligent, thoughtful and interested in classic films.

Sadly you’ve also got rancid trolls like Kowalski who try to derail valuable old threads with his me-me-me all-caps troll posts.

Well, it’s the best we’ve got. Here’s hoping more thoughtful film enthusiasts sign up.

reply

trolls like Kowalski who try to derail valuable old threads with his me-me-me all-caps troll posts.

Lol. Disagree, but lol.

reply

There’s nothing to disagree with, it’s a fact 🤷🏻‍♂️

reply

YOU CONTINUE TO SPREAD THE GOSPEL OF KOWALSKI™️......I APPRECIATE YOU, MELTY🫂

reply

How are you coping without Skavau lodged in your anus?

reply

JUST FINE....AS HE WAS MY SECRET IDENTITY.🫢

reply

I know he wore you as a cock-sock, but his sock account, if he has one, is clearly Flimflam.

Now, you’ve admitted to having anal sex with SheweeJim, but have you also slept with Onan? 👆🏻

reply

If someone like Onan said to Kowalski "let's spend the weekend together and see what happens", Kowalski would say yes.

reply

No question.

In fact I suspect there’s nary a post on Moviechat that Kowalski didn’t write while sitting on a cock.

reply

You can't have a one on one discussion on Reddit. Nothing wrong with a small close-knit forum. But we should all be trying to grow MovieChat. Invite posters from other forums. Keep agitating the management here for improvements.

reply

What kind of improvements do you think would help? I will try to push MovieChat over on Reddit, which is about the only other forum I use for Movies/TV discussions.

reply

I'd like to be able to embed videos and especially images. On a movie site you should be able to posts scenes from movies and trailers.

Writing "< blockquote >" to post a quote is too cumbersome. Just give us a quote option.

Things like that.

reply

WHATEVER GETS BUTTS IN SEATS SO TO SPEAK...I AM ONBOARD FOR.

reply

I agree with attaching IMAGES. I wanted to do it once and ended up having to create an open folder on my Google Share. PITA.

Also I would like to see a LIKE button and LOVE button here, and a DISLIKE.

Reddit would be better if they COUNTED the DISLIKES rather than just decrease the LIKE count.

"On a movie site..." Yeah, it's a movie site. Isn't there a genre known as "political thrillers"? I think there could and should be more wiggle room with political opinions on the GD board. M5 mentioned this years ago when he posted that sometimes the lines become blurred between societal and political issues. Of course. They're overlapping.

I just had two threads shut down because I was celebrating Inauguration Day. They weren't overtly political. It's become too rigid and intolerant here where this is concerned. I've actually had some pretty good, civil conversations with posters on the Politics board. Conversely, I've had some real conflicts on this board that were every bit as heated and nasty as what goes on over there. I know how this came about. It's because a few, obsessed fanatics that live and breathe politics 24/7 ruined it for the rest of us that are actually able to strike a balance. This is an opinion. If this thread gets nuked, then there's definitely censorship going on here.

reply

I agree 100%. I'm not sure why they feel there should be such a strong division between politics and everyday conversation. I often make a political observation on a regular thread. You can never tell from the OP where a thread might go. That's why they're called threads - they branch off in different directions.

Who's M5? I think MovieManCin2 was banned for posting politics on GD.

Also, let's not forget that the original IMDb was very contentious and fools would get in heated arguments over the most frivolous of details.

reply

M5 is my designation for Mod 5 here, who I personally think has been the coolest.

Very interesting that you should happen to bring up MovieManCin2, who imo was instrumental in bringing that ruling about. I don't know if he was banned but he disappeared after taunting and daring the mods to ban him.

reply

Okay. Yeah. I like M5. Cool as hell.

MMC2 came back a few months ago and was promptly banned. 🤣

I like the old guy. We were buddies on fb when I was Admin there.

reply

Ok, verified! I encouraged M5 to ban him. 😁

reply

It may have been M4. He (or she?) seems to be the banhappy one.

reply

This site is perfect. IMDB was enjoyable, but there was a certain amount of chaos also on those boards. So many spammers.

reply

I don't recall spammers per se, unless you are referring to the trolls, many of which I think were just attention-deprived and loved to stir up controversy. They got so rude, not JUST making dumb or argumentative comments, but some just outright throwing personal insults. Nothing that the "ignore" feature couldn't solve though. It took some people awhile to recognize and ignore the trolls; they were getting fed way too often.

reply

I miss IMDb too! I like MovieChat, too, though. I think it's hard to have a discussion on Reddit (even though I have to use it for some communities)....
