are movies more banal, half dimentional now?

Maybe it is just me acting jaded over the industry turns, but really feels like movies have lost some of their "depth" I guess you could call it. Weak, empy characters lacking likeability, singlular story lines followedinstead of multiple isnteresting strings that all tie together at the end... mentally unchallenging...

I know summer blockbuster types are all 'splosions and flashy colors, I get that, but many other things that coudl be deeper feel like they should have been a 30 minute Twilight Zone episode instread... not going to call out specific films, and it can be subjective, I know... feels like the OVER ALL landscape has dulled down... maybe to be safe? There's one here or there that pops out and shocks or astouds, but the reast aren't even trying.

Is it the "any idiot can own a cinema camera for $900, million dumb films on streaming now" thing?

reply

No, I don’t think they are.

I’ve been watching a lot of movies from the 1950s lately and boy, let me tell you, there was a whole lot of banality being churned out in that decade. Frivolous, glossy stuff with little emotional depth seemed to be the style back then. At a higher ratio than now, from what I’ve seen. Of course that was probably a societal response in the post-war period, people wanting pure escapism after the horrors of real life they all endured.

To me this complaint (which seems to be cyclical and recurring.. didn’t someone just post this same thing a few weeks ago?) often comes from people who are themselves choosing to watch the fluff rather than making the effort to seek out the many, many great films that are still being made today.

Somebody asked a question here once about if the godfather was released today, would people between the ages of 18 and 25 like it, and the answer was clearly no.

we're living in a very dumbed down era, cinema used to be about telling a story, now it's become a collection of scenes and some snappy, "witty" and sarcastic soundbites usually for the trailer... people love this, they don't want to sit down and be told a story. either because they don't have the patience or the intelligence...

thats why superhero films are so popular it's fast food for viewers, but another problem is that we live in a society that is so dumbed down and restricted that people aren't creative anymore.. thats why everything is a remake or a sequel.

theres nothing new in the cinemas. we're now in the era of remaking things, superheros and these bizarre childish films where princesses are watching over midgets fighting for planet earth against some wierd monkey/human hybred and wizards. these were things we saw when we were 12, now theres 47 year olds watching them.

and sadly morons have not only accepted it, they're lapping it up.

truth to the core.
I suppose it is not for us to judge. Afterall, McDonalds is STILL one of, if not THE largest Crap Food chains in the world. I guess the masses like what they like.

I would say it is nearly impossible to evolve away from that, but, in the USA Chik-Fil-A (healthier chicken) just took over McD as the best or most popular whatever. So, MAYBE there can be some hope for movies too.

The thing is, mcdonalds never claim to be high quality, amazing, 17 michelin star cusine. it's cheap crap for people who are in a rush.

have you seen the trailers for most of these garbage films? the reviews? the way they sell these movies with the hype? they actually believe that this shit is groundbreaking.

thats the difference!

of course it's for us to judge, whats the point of making a thread like this or any thread if having an opinion (judging) is a crime!?

overall I'm just asking if it is more than me noticing that amount of crap films is becoming toxic. I think it is.

if SOME people want to enjoy their cgi super hero films, I'm okay with that, but saddened at the loss of quality. Heck, even I like McD once in a while. :D

Some but definitely not all, lots of enjoyable ones still coming out.
