Nostalgic comfort food

The weather is getting cold and it's time for some comfort.

What was something your mom, grandmother for other significant person cooked for you when you were little that brings you comfort to think of or eat?

My mom made homemade bread in the shape of a braid. It was delicious and made the whole house smell good.

Jiffy Pop popcorn 😁

When I was a kid The Wizard of Oz was shown on network TV maybe once or twice a year.

We always had Jiffy Pop for Wizard of Oz nightπŸ˜„

I like this answer. Not just because buttery popcorn is yummy but how you associate it with a certain movie. I guess the closest I can think of where I do something like this is whenever I watch a basketball or football game on the weekend with my favorite team I always want to have a hot dog and French fries. Certain things just go together and there is a comforting aspect to it, especially when it becomes a tradition. 😊

My wife and I had hot dogs and french fries while watching the Packers this past weekend! Yes, certain things do go together nicely.

I heard somewhere that it's as much fun to make as it is to eat

I seem to remember it being aired right around Thanksgiving and yeah, as a grade school kid it was something I really looked forward to every year.

Fried eggs and buttered pancakes.

I think breakfast food in general is comfort food and I love both fried eggs and buttered pancakes. My mother made fried eggs for me as much as scrambled, if not more, growing up. I don't like runny yolks though. My fried eggs have hard yolks. πŸ™‚

Chicken Soup w/ home-made bread w/ thick crust, and good salted butter and a nice glass of very cold milch.

And a women with a kind face and attractive shape beaming down at me in only semi-motherly fashion.

reply

Yes chicken soup and buttery bread also is great comfort food. I'm mentioned to my mom last week how much I enjoyed her homemade bread growing up that she would make in the shape of a braid, the one I mentioned in the OP, and she baked some for me. I'm enjoying a piece each day and it's like a taste of childhood. 😊

Mashed potatoes. You can mix anything into it and it works.

Signed, million man.

reply

There's nothing much more comforting on Earth, as far as food goes anyway, than mashed potatoes. Mashed potatoes and macaroni and cheese are about as comforting as it gets.

reply

Fried potatoes and onions.

Most the comfort foods which our moms made for us are considered horribly unhealthy now, full of fat and sugar. But go for it, as long as you don't overdo it.

reply

Not in every case. I remember warmly my mother's raw celery, carrot and other vegetables platter. Oh, the comfort those raw radishes would give me.

Just kidding.

You're right, in moderation of course. And sometimes just remembering that someone did something special like cooking a certain food can bring comfort without actually eating it.

By the way, I've been wondering where you were. Glad to see you stopping in.

reply

Oh, I've been here. I just took a week vacation and haven't been online as much. But I did post a few times.

Sometimes junk food is comfort food. I definitely like pretzels with my beer. 😁
