Nostalgic comfort food

The weather is getting cold and it's time for some comfort.

What was something your mom, grandmother for other significant person cooked for you when you were little that brings you comfort to think of or eat?

My mom made homemade bread in the shape of a braid. It was delicious and made the whole house smell good.

Sloppy Joes.

reply

Definitely good comfort food! This is the second food-related thread within the past two weeks where sloppy joes have been mentioned and I caved. Just added some Manwich to my grocery list. πŸ˜‚

Pretty light on his feet for a fat guy πŸ‘

reply

Lol Chris Farley was known for that. He was the best!

Chicken and dumplings is a staple cold weather comfort food. So succulent and satisfying!

reply

Yes, chicken and dumplings would be in my top three comfort foods. I was lucky enough that my grandmother wrote out her recipe for me before she passed. She made everything from scratch.

Animal pancakes.

reply

Are these pancakes in the shape of animals or pancakes made out of animals?

reply

Unless you are in the Addams family, pancakes in the shape of animals...OTOH maple syrup can make anything taste good.

IIRC mom always purchased pure maple syrup. No fake syrup for us.

reply

I think that's very sweet that your mom made you pancakes in the shape of animals. That took extra effort. She must have thought you were pretty special.

reply

Yeah, it's definitely comfort food season. Time to bring out the crock pot. I lean toward stews and chilies.

As far as nostalgic comfort foods, I immediately think of my mom making both potato and apple pancakes.

reply

Potato and apple pancakes both sound good. I've never had them but I've had banana pancakes and liked them.

And yes, chili is the ultimate comfort food of fall in my opinion. I have to make it at least once a year.

Gingerman cookies reminds me of being at grandmother's home https://images.app.goo.gl/2SzJHfBuS3pvQjV7A

reply

I have never had those but I should try them as I love gingerbread. At Christmas a local bakery makes the most delicious soft gingerbread boy cookies. My mother has given me one in my stocking every year even into adulthood. 😊

reply

I usually partake during Christmas time, they go good with hot cocoa.

reply

I HAVE WEIRD TASTES....AND NEVER MUCH LIKED FOOD THAT PEOPLE MADE IN MY FAMILY MADE...I ALWAYS PREFERRED TAKE OUT...SO....CHINESE FOOD MAYBE.

reply

Oh I'm all about some takeout. If you asked my kids their favorite foods growing up it would probably be some form of takeout too. πŸ˜¬πŸ˜‚ And I love Chinese food. Anything with ginger in it is a hit with me!

reply

You're weird

reply

crockpot pork chunk with onions and sauerkraut.

reply

That sounds good and I hear sauerkraut is a big time probiotic so it's somewhat healthy too! It's the time of year for the Crock-Pot for sure.

reply

I love eating Chili in the Fall, Meatloaf is good too

reply

Yes chili is the ultimate fall food. I like meatloaf a lot too but my husband does not so I rarely get to eat it anymore. My mother would make a meatloaf where she rolled up ham and mozzarella cheese inside of it and it was so good.

reply

Ham & Mozzarella cheese in Meatloaf huh?? Interesting combination πŸ€”

reply

Yes it was called a Sicilian Meat Roll. You rolled the meatloaf, ham and mozzarella up. Kind of like those pumpkin cream cheese logs you see? But with meat, ham and cheese.

Unlike with meatloaf there wasn't any ketchup in it though. And instead Italian seasonings were added.

reply

Ok, I'll try anything once

Tomato soup coupled with grilled cheese sandwiches has always been a traditional comfort food. And then, there are the endless varieties of Mac & Cheese.

I have personally always seen this as a comfort food...Beer Butt Chicken 😁https://www.youtube.com/watch?app=desktop&v=wAc3GikLL8Q Talk about smelling good when it's cooking! And when combined with the wonderful aroma of my neighbor's wood burning fireplace coming through the window? Heavenly! πŸ˜‹πŸ₯°

reply

Yes tomato soup with grilled cheese is great. When it snows my traditional pairing is either chicken noodle soup or tomato soup with grilled cheese. Sadly it doesn't snow much where I live anymore but if it ever does again that's what I'll be eating! 😁

reply

I consume a lot of chicken noodle soup because yes, it's great comfort food and also because the broth is considered to be medicinal. It's often recommended as an antidote during the colds and flu season. I haven't experienced either one in about a decade now and I'm the type of guy that's been burning the candle at both ends all of my teen and adult years.
