Movies based on games

As a follow-up to my thread yesterday about games, name a movie based on a board game or video game.

Are such movies a good idea?

Usually no. Games tell a story way better since they are longer and interactive.

Resident Evil
Silent Hill
House of the Dead
Alone in the Dark
Borderlands
Assasin's Creed
Final Fantasy

Just of the top of my head, there are many more. Also there is Metal Gear Solid in the making which is one of my favorite franchises.

Wow! There are a lot more than I realized. And I know most people take their video games pretty seriously so if someone made a movie and changed a bunch of things or didn't make it the way the viewer was hoping I think it could be an especially big let down.

reply

I haven't been into games since I was about 18, but Metal Gear Solid was my favourite game of all time as a kid I even have the soundtrack.

I would add Dragon Age to your list. I loved the first two, they couldn't be made into movies, but perhaps a miniseries.

reply

Mostly no. I think TV show adaptations make more sense. You get to flesh out the story & world.

The Last of Us was excellent & I just started Fallout & it's fantastic so far.

reply

Agreed about TV probably being a better medium. It might also depend on the game though. For something like Mario Bros a movie might be enough because how deep can you go with that? 😁 I've seen The Last of Us although I've never played the video game, so my perspective is very different than for some, but it did entertain me and I'll keep watching it. I've heard it has taken some pretty strong criticism though from people who played the game. I guess for something like that you can never make everyone happy.

reply

I think the narrative driven videogames work better as shows.

But ya, the likes of Mario & Sonic are easy to adapt as a movie. There's lore but the games aren't necessarily plot driven.

reply

I want an Elder Scrolls series based in Morrowind, where an Aundae vampire becomes the arch-mage of the Telvanni.

reply

My favorite movie based on a game is Clue. It's not the best movie I've ever seen by a long shot but I love watching Tim Curry and I love the game Clue, therefore I like the movie.

reply

I saw that at the theater when it came out.

reply

Both Fresh (1994) and Revolver (2005), where the game of chess is integral to the story.

reply

Yes, and then there was the miniseries The Queen's Gambit where chess was central to the story. There are some movies and TV shows based on games and others where the game is one of the central focuses.

Just came upon this on tubi while looking for a movie to watch https://moviechat.org/tt1838722/Truth-or-Dare. It also goes by the title Truth or Die and is based on that party game.

Thank goodness for the YouTube comments section that clued me in to that being a fake movie promo. Looks like it could have been a good movie though. πŸ˜€

I haven't seen clue in all of these years. Was that any good?

I enjoyed Tron on a side note.

reply

It's kind of campy and yet I just love Tim Curry and I like the game Clue so I felt like watching it was worth my time. I'd say give it a try someday. It had several good actors in it.

reply

Rampage and Battleship get my vote for making okay movies with very little material to go on.

reply

I love the game Battleship but I had no idea they made a movie based on it. I don't like war movies though so I guess I'll stick to the game.

reply

It wasn't horrible. It's worth it just to see how they managed it.

I'm still waiting for a Stratego movie.
