Slow page loading and duplicate posts

This site is a bit sluggish and I have seen several duplicate posts. Tommy here managed to post five times within a minute which shouldn't be possible. /1/1/64e137a8161861504495322f

The sysop should check this out. I suspect high server load.

Moderator5 has been notified about the situation.

reply

I assumed it's related to the new pop-up ads they introduced. Problem started about the same time they introduced them.

reply

I have ads blocked and this site is still slow, but this info will help the sysop to solve the problem.

I just checked. It took 20 seconds to load just the front page html code so the slowness is definitely caused by the MC server/network.

reply

I do too, but their new ads have a different type of invasive coding. I don't see the ads, but I can tell it's trying to load on my phone.

Meanwhile, on my laptop (no ad blocker) the ads are loading on the bottom and running havoc with the web pages. At least 1-2 weeks with me.

MC is a very simplistic site with very fast load times before they introduced the pop-up ads. I had to get an ad blocker because their ads wouldn't allow me normal access on my phone anymore.

Coding causing internal conflict with servers, too?

reply

MC loads ads, tracking code and who knows what else from 100+ domains. Loading and executing all that extra code and files slows the browser down. The front page and some movie page connected to these domains.

It’s brutal how bad the site has become with the popups and slow loading

Did you click the "add reply" button more than once? If you did, then it's pretty clear what happened.

reply

I guess so but it’s because when I first pressed it, the site froze with no indication it had recognized the reply. So apparently I tapped the button again and the duplicates ultimately posted when the site unfroze

reply

This is how you end up with multiple posts. Hit the button once and wait.

Normally when you press the form submit button the browser uses an existing connection or opens a new one to the server, sends the form data, waits for a reply (the URL of your new post) from the server and loads the URL. End of transaction. While waiting for a reply, the browser displays the busy indicator and the submit button is inactive.

During the slowdown, the server reads the form data and keeps the connection open but doesn't send anything to the browser. Then after a while either the browser or the server closes the connection, the busy indicator stops being busy and the submit button is activated. The form data has been entered into the database but the only indication of this is the tiny busy indicator. The user thinks nothing happened and clicks that enticing yellow button again ... and again.

I wonder why browsers don't display an error message in this situation. "Server closed connection" or "Timeout while waiting for a reply" would be helpful.

reply

Have you tried clearing your cache?

reply

I have a super old PC running Windows XP that had no problem quickly loading this site prior to the recent pop-ups. I'll have to test this site now to see what happens now.

reply

That list can be pasted into the hosts file to block ads here. No need for apps or extensions which frees even more RAM and CPU cycles for browsing. It really makes this site faster on older computers. Tested it on a 10 years old laptop. May break other sites. Meaning, later some site demands "Disable your ad blocker to enter" and you forgot all about the hosts file 😵‍💫 If that's OK, then proceed to edit this system file.

Linux & macOS: sudo nano /etc/hosts

reply

It's happened to me a few times. I just let it load and open a second tab.

reply

It literally happened with this post.

reply

I keep getting full page ads for somewhere called Amelia Island and Huggys Pampers that block ANY access and won’t go away…so weird and annoying. It started a couple months ago.

reply

DuckDuckGo web browser cures this - it’s free!

reply

Thx, I’ll get on that.

reply

It has transformed my website experience. I don’t use Google Chrome or Safari half as much anymore.

reply

It happened to me so I switched to Duck Duck Go for my browser. I may get a slow load from time to time, but I haven’t seen an ad since.

reply

Andy agrees, that’s the word of two trusty boys and I’ll take it.

reply

Amelia Island in northern Florida? I had a work related conference there at the Ritz Carleton in the 90s and it is beautiful there.

reply

I am noticing slow loading times this week, too, and am constantly having to X out of ads.

reply

Use the Tools feature of your Browser, and look into extensions for ad-blockers. The two I use at the moment are Privacy Badger, and uBlock Origin (my brother's a tech geek and advised me to get those). I used Ghostery for years, but the people running it stopped updating, unfortunately.

reply

Thank you!

reply

Yep lately the site has been super slow. Just glad to know it is a general issue and not just me.

reply

It's ok once I'm on here, but when I open the tab on my phone, it's just stuck on the loading screen for about 10 seconds.

Edit... whilst trying to post this reply, it froze. Pressing the MC ticket didn't work either. Had to leave and come back, then I pressed GD and waited for another 10 seconds before getting back here. And they looking into the cause of this?

reply

I see the duplicate post glitch hasn't been fixed yet.

reply

☹️

reply

That's because people hit the add reply multiple times, instead of once and waiting.

Signed, million man.

reply

Yes, it has been sluggish for the past few days. Slow to load pages and slow to post.

reply

Still a bit sluggish.
