A thread about enjoying cinematic violence or violent cinema or even, you know, s***** one as such...

... and, besides obvious examples of certain films with certain not only themes but scenes explicitly portrayed, which most normal people can't or won't be able to "enjoy" but still having an appreciation for them or not, I wonder...

And I won't ask any legal questions here but I would kindly appreciate it if the law wasn't TOO strong alone a focus here BUT... Neither are knee-jerk reactions or suspicions of any kind - Its just a film, folks.

But is it alright if I actually ENJOY watching violent films and violence in them and even see say bloody scenes beautifully portrayed of one or another type of variety, but we will imagine gory killings and whatnot.

And on different but sometimes related side - what about T&A films with s***** material in them as such, including exploitation flicks of the Jess Franco, Jean Rollin, Walerian Borowczyk and Alain Robbe-Grillet's varieties and having NO problem with them at all? Or does it make us naughty voyeurs WORTHY of criticism?

ALSO. Cinema sometimes sees some "material" as two sides of the opposite coin, and many films aren't morality tales either but are not meant to encourage certain behaviour either. But then again, do we agree that FILMS and REAL LIFE are two different things, mostly but not exclusively due to the fact that what happens in films isn't real and in life it certainly is - but also, life has CONSTANT responsibility for us issues and we don't view life overall as good guys versus bad guys either although OF COURSE some deeds are bad and wrong and punishable and others not encouraged but also strongly spoken against by certain individuals - and is there logic to it all?

Plus, I never enjoyed violence in REAL LIFE, even people hitting others much less killing and stuff. It often SADLY happens yes but... You get the picture.

But anyways, is it alright if I enjoy violence and related stuff in movies, and on a lesser note, s*x scenes as such or at least don't mind and float through them, with one issue not making me a sadist and the other even a naughty voyeur and others in between here and there?

P.S. I am in many ways an adventurous film goer and watcher and in life I like to think we can have many varieties of fun. Is that also alright, cheers.

"Oh cool, see all those people having their heads gorily blown off like that in that scene from that move" - is that alright?

reply

I can never get through all of you posts, but are you saying I'm disturbed or not because I like movies like John Wick?

reply

I am NOT even remotely suggesting that. Heck, I LOVE stuff like "Ichi the Killer" (2001) for instance and I don't think that makes ME "disturbed" in any way.

reply

Have you SEEN "Ichi the Killer" (2001) by the way 102000? See it one day if you like over the top, bizarre, violent Asian action and otherwise movies, its also at times very surreal almost David Lynch-like but in a more typically zany, high octane etc type of Takashi Miike (last name pronounced "Mee-kay", almost like "Mickey Mouse", lol) way. And its my favourite film of his by the way.

reply

I don't know anyone who didn't enjoy every time Tyrion slapped the shit out of Joffrey.

reply

What film is that from, Carter?

reply

Game of Thrones... highly recommended for violence enthusiasts.

reply

Oh alright, and yes I do know Game of Thrones but haven't watched it too much in last few years but I am aware its a very popular and highly beloved TV series.

reply

Depends for me. I don't really care for gore or slashers. Don't care for the "torture porn" films like the Saw & Hostel movies.

I do enjoy it in the action genre though. Especially in revenge flicks. I love it when characters get what they fucking deserve.

Extra points when the asshole character dies a painful death.

This^

Blood and even gore is fine but when thats all there is , and taken to the extreme (Saw & Hostel) then ... wtf ? why? I for one lose interest, more than that even "turned off" ? "repulsed"? , and would need to be paid to watch it.

They seem to be very successful though *shrug*

reply

"They seem to be very successful though *shrug*" - you see it as a 'bad' thing, chatterer?

reply

Indeed I do, I'm trying not to be disparaging of the people that like them but I think its those movie's success is a sad enditement of the human condition

I just cant see the appeal of a movie where the "story" is just there purely to frame one horrific scene of mutilation after another

Do you like them?

all thos other movies - starship troopers , alien , even Ichi ... fine , but not the "torture porn"

reply

I don't think extreme gore films are that popular though. They have a cult following to be sure, but they're not mainstream in any sense.

reply

What about gory horror movies from the "Alien" franchise to Peter Jackson's "Dead Alive" (aka "Braindead") (1992) to Rodriguez' "From Dusk Till Dawn" (and its 2 slightly inferior sequels), gory Asian Category 3 horror movies, Takashi Miike, Shinya Tsukamoto, "Battle Royale" (2000), Paul Verhoeven's "Starship Troopers" (1997) among others - and if you actually LOVE the gore in them, is that entirely cool, fine, normal etc.

Also - yeah I know but in real life, Michael Madsen was recently arrested for domestic violence, apparently he hit (more than slapped?) his wife and someone (she or someone else?) called the police on him. Yeah, in real life even LESSER real violence is tolerated far less than more extreme CINEMATIC VIOLENCE.

And speaking of that incident above, I couldn't help but compare it to his most popular iconic ear slicing scene in "Reservoir Dogs" (1992) except, haha, it was the POLICE OFFICER HE tortured but then SPOILERS - he got shot by a "criminal" who actually was an undercover cop, lol, and I know SPOILERS - but, most of us I am sure have indeed seen Reservoir Dogs and that movie is now oh my God 32 years old.

Bonnie and Clyde started it all imo, Peckinpah did it really well, De Palma to an extent. So much disturbing stuff happens in real life that nothing in movies really bothers me.

My friend, we PM a lot and I appreciate your intelligence and kind thoughts. But holy Moses! You need to edit your posts. That was eight paragraphs, that is a LOT!

Like at least four paragraphs too much!
I don’t want to read a James Clavevel novel every time bro.

reply

That's alright but then again, I developed wrong, sorry, haha, LONG writing style decades ago, its become almost second nature.

reply

It’s OK.
I developed wrong as well.
My close friends think I’m a tad off and perhaps they are right.
Ask me if I care.
