Can anyone suggest some Horror films for my 10 year old daughter to watch?

We’re gradually introducing her to the horror genre. Unfortunately, my wife likes ‘crap horror films’, so I need some decent suggestions to counteract hers. So far we’ve watched: -
Alien (mine)
M3GAN (daughter)
The Babysitter (wife)
The Babysitter II (wife)
The Thing (mine)
The Haunting (wife)

Future suggestions: -
Poltergeist 1982 (mine)
13 Ghosts (wife)

They Live (88) starring Rowdy Roddy Piper and Keith David is a great alien invasion picture and has one of the greatest street fights of all time. *There is be a bit of foul language.

reply

Put the glasses on!!

reply

What a brawl!!!

According to movie chit chat that scene was only supposed to last for half a minute but Rowdy and Keith practiced it out for several weeks and it turned out to be a masterpiece. The fisticuffs lasted for over five minutes! I’m pretty sure South Park parodied it in the ‘Cripple Fight’ episode.

reply

One of the greatest street brawls ever put on film, no doubt.

Yup, the fight between Jimmy and Timmy is freakin' hilarious 🤣

reply

I gotta rewatch SP Cripple Fight, I remember it being hilarious.

reply

That movie scared the crap out of me when I was a kid, but later became one of my favorites.

reply

I had an art prof in college that mentioned it as a great example of subversive film.

Thanks - added to the list.

I’m not really into to horror myself but three early 2000s films I really enjoyed were:

The Ring (2002)
Dark Water (2005)
Skeleton Key (2005)

If you ever watch the RedLetterMedia youtube channel Jay Bauman is a big horror fan and makes recommendations.

The Ring might be one for the future.

reply

The Skeleton Key is a great film 👍

Dead Alive (1992)
Re-Animator (1985)
Waxwork (1988)
Of Unknown Origin (1983)
The Frighteners (1996)

What is the motivation to inundate your daughter w/ horror films ? I don't get it, Andy.

But if you insist on creeping her out, I recommend Carnival of Souls, by Herc Harvey, early 60s.

reply

Her peers at school have started watching them and so she wishes to experience them too. I have always been an advocate of helping her develop a wider worldview, whilst at the same time making sure that she experiences things that she can handle.

I have been on this site for many years and appreciate all the suggestions that the regs have made during that that time, which I’ve had the pleasure to watch with my daughter.

reply

Have to admit, at the sound of being a hypocrite, I was a stone horror-fan from a very, very young age. Cut my teeth on twilight zone, at the age of 4.

The only caveat is that modern horror has far less restraint than what passed in my youth. And some very adult topics are thrown into the mix.

I think you're a great guy, I'm just throwing up a slight cautionary note, which might come across as presumptuous, but I wouldn't feel right just encouraging an un-filtered exposure to this genre.

reply

Thank you for your candour.

I have exposed my daughter to all sorts of things since she was a baby, whether that be by travelling all over the world or experiencing different forms of cinema. Nevertheless, I’ve always made sure that she’s been exposed to experiences that I feel that she can handle.

My aim is to entertain her, not leave her mentally scarred, lol.

"My aim is to entertain her, not leave her mentally scarred, lol."

With that goal in mind, I think this would be a good choice. It's sure to elicit some chuckles. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=82gqF6QRb_Q

reply

I know I shouldn’t have, but I did chuckle reading the thread with you guys arguing over a can of soup - only on Moviechat, eh?

reply

Why shouldn't you have? If I was an outsider viewing that argument, I'd be seeing the humor also. 😉

reply

Ah, that’s ok then, lol. I just wasn’t expecting that thread to go in that particular direction.

reply

I wasn't expecting that either. I thought I was just offering my honest opinions to a mundane topic of chicken noodle soup.

Let's just blame the lunacy (pun intended) on the currently waxing 'Blue Supermoon', not Yellow Moon 😁 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O87iUDZGDKs

reply

You could probably show her The Burbs. It has horror elements and its more funny than scary.

reply

Well, since we now know she has nerves of steel, have you thought of showing her all the classics? There are horror enthusiasts than insist on newcomers to the genre watching all the older classic stuff. These would probably include:

Nightmare on Elm Street
Psycho
Halloween
Scream
I Know What You Did Last Summer
The Exorcist
Chucky

I had a friend once who loved horror flicks, mainly to laugh at the cheesy special-effects in the older ones or the silly reoccurring tropes one would see in them.

She might also find the behind-the-scenes parts about how they did the special-effects to be fun and fascinating.

My wife actually suggested Chucky.

reply

Wizard of Oz. Those friggin flyin monkeys scared the heck out of me when I was 10. To this day I wont go near a flying monkey. Fact.

reply

We are all massive Oz fans.

reply

Yay! You should show your daughter "Return to Oz." Talk about Ozian-style nightmare fuel. They had a ton of creepy stuff in that movie.

reply

We watched Return To Oz a few years ago - she loved it.

reply

Okay :D Then I guess she's more than ready to watch "Labyrinth." That movie really made me uneasy as a kid. I liked it better as an adult.

reply

We did Labyrinth around the same time - she enjoyed it.

reply

Wow! :D She IS tough. At least you can count on her to keep her wits about her if something truly scary happens in real life. People like those who can keep a cool head in scary situations.

reply

She exemplifies grace under pressure - she’s a real cool kid.

reply

Considering your daughter's age
Monster Squad (language)
Army of Darkness
The Stand (1990)
Gremlins
Hocus Pocus
The Witches
Sleepy Hollow (either mr Toad and Ichabod and/or sleepy hollow w/johnny Depp)
A New Nightmare

reply

Thanks - added to the list.
We did Gremlins I and II a couple of years ago.

reply

I just remembered, we did Hocus Pocus I and II a few years ago too.

reply

You're not making this easy 😅.

reply

We’ve watched hundreds, if not thousands of films together.
