What was the last GREAT year for movies?

People talk about 1999, 1981, and (I think) 1939 as great years for movies. Has there been any such year since 2000?

reply

Wow 😯

reply

Agree!

reply

I've heard people mention 2007 and cite No Country for old men, Gone Baby Gone, Hot Fuzz, and Transformers.

I think 1989 was the best year for film in my lifetime, and I don't think we've had anything like that in the 2000's.

reply

1987 IS BETTER...I WIN!🤩

reply

I mean 87 did have Three Men and a Baby so there is that.

I remember 89 having better films than 87 but my memory also sucks shit and I can barely remember anything that far back.

reply

1987 HAS MANNEQUIN,BRO...JEEZ...GET WITH IT.

reply

LOL I knew that was coming.

reply

I NEED TO GET A MANNEQUIN POSTER...THAT WOULD BE FUCKING SWEET...HANGING IN FRONT OF MY FACE ALL THE TIME.

reply

Better yet - get a mannequin!

reply

I HAVE ONE...I WANT A BETTER ONE THOUGH...THEY ARE PRICEY...WAITING FOR THE RIGHT MANNEQUIN AT THE RIGHT PRICE.

reply

yeah i also think 2007 was pretty great

reply

These three are 10/10 for me, and I’ve never rated another film that high after 2007.

Death proof
No Country for Old Men
There Will Be Blood.

reply

I've never seen "Death Proof," but I've seen the last two and agree that they're great movies. This year would get my vote also.

reply

YOU NEED TO WATCH DEATH PROOF...ESPECIALLY IF YOU LIKE THOSE OTHER TWO FLICKS.

reply

definitely! Grindhouse is epic
i remember There Will Be Blood just blew me away

reply

Remove Transformers and 2007 was great. No Country for Old Men, Gone Baby Gone, Hot Fuzz, There Will be Blood, The Diving Bell and Butterfly, Superbad, Zodiac, American Gangster, Before the Devil Knows You're Dead.

1999 is still my favourite movie year though.

reply

1976 was great. I don't think there's been any great since 2000, but 2007 and 2014 were very good.

reply

What are your favorites from 1976?

reply

YOU DIDN'T ASK ME...BUT..I LOOKED AND...MY FAVORITE FILM OF 1976 IS JOHN WAYNE'S THE SHOOTIST.

reply

That’s one I haven’t seen yet but I can always appreciate his films. I need to go through my letterbox log and see what I’ve seen for that year.

reply

HIS FINAL FILM...CO-STARRING RON HOWARD AND JAMES STEWART...IT IS TRULY GREAT.

reply

These are some big ones for me:

The Big Racket
Burnt Offerings
Keoma
Taxi Driver
Who Can Kill a Child?

reply

I HAVE SEEN TWO OF THOSE.

reply

Taxi Driver
Carrie
Marathon Man
Network
Rocky
The Bad News Bears

reply

I can’t imagine liking anything more than Taxi Driver for that year.

reply

I CAN...AFTER THE SHOOTIST...I WOULD PUT ROCKY OVER TAXI DRIVER AS WELL...NOT THE OTHERS THOUGH...I DO LIKE ALL OF THEM THOUGH.

reply

Adding The Shootist to my watchlist now. 😀

reply

NICE👍🏾

reply

I do appreciate your recommendations. I watched Cool Hand Luke recently after not seeing it for years and I was throughly blown away. I cried at the end.

reply

IF YOU DIDN'T ENJOY MY COMPANY, YOU WOULDN'T RESPOND TO MY COMMENTS!

reply

YOU READ THIS SITUATION WRONG...I ENJOY MY OWN COMMENTS...I WILL RESPOND TO ANYONE OR ANYTHING TO BUMP OUT ANOTHER OF MY GOLDEN WINNERS.

reply

OH. THANK YOU FOR EXPLAINING.

reply

First of all, I try not to claim my opinion as absolute, so I'd go with "favorite" rather than "great" or "best." Secondly, my method was spur of the moment and highly unscientific. I just did an IMDb advanced search from 2000 to present, sorted by my rating and made a tick in the year column of a movie I loved. Out of a bit over 2000 films rated, I think I rated 329 an 8/10+, so stopped counting there. I also skipped a few movies rated 8 or 9 that I either couldn't recall too clearly, or that didn't evoke an emotional response.

Anyway, the year with the most ticks was 2000:

American Psycho
Unbreakable
The Dish
Memento
Snatch
Ginger Snaps
Frequency
The Whole Nine Yards
Chopper
Uzumaki (Spiral)

Funny, my gut instinct before the count was either 2008 or 2012, and I make no claims here other than 2000 had the most ticks in its column. If I used a different method or more effort, I'm near-certain my result would have been different, but it's close enough for government work.

I really do love all those movies, but certainly don't claim this as my favorite movie year of the millennium so far.

reply

The best year for movies is 1995 and that’s fact.

reply

1999. That's a bigger fact.

reply

This is correct .

reply

Never heard of it. 7.1 is a good score.

reply

1999 the best year. 2007 probably my second favourite year.

reply

1957

reply

What were some of the great movies from that year?

reply

THE BIBLE,METROPOLIS,A WOMAN DOES LAUNDRY.

reply

I thought A Woman Does Laundry was that French movie from the 70s directed by Chantel Ackerman.
