Ever use the ultimate guitar app? As a novice, I find it helpful. You write and record so I'm assuming you probably don't need it.

reply

Those things are great for practice. Even though I've been playing for a long time, I still practice consistently.

I don't have any guitar apps but I know some people who use them and find them helpful. Tuner, phrase trainer, even just the metronome are all very useful, and I have templates set up in Logic Pro that provide those tools.

reply

MMA? Wow!

I'm putting you up for Official MC Bouncer during the next MC elections!
I enjoy watching the MMA but damn, I'm always nervous one of those dudes is going to get crippled or worse. Rough sport.

reply

I forgot an important word up there ⬆️

I can still be Official MC Bouncer but I would be counting on the Taser or maybe a K9 Deputy Bouncer to do the heavy lifting.

reply

I'm sure there's money in the budget for a Tazer for you lol.

I use my bike for everything local (within 15 miles). Ever do a multi-day ride? I usually pack a hammock and head to the north shore.

reply

Funny you mention that, as I have a couple entry-level gathered end hammocks (Ridge Pinnacle 360 & 180) strung up inside from when I had a pinched neck nerve, and now are like a lullaby when I can't sleep, and have thought about hammock camping a lot. I, however wasn't thinking about weight with the tarp (2lbs.).

And even though I've been an off and on again mostly urban cyclist my whole life, I've just been back on for about two months after a multi year couch potato stretch drinking like a fish. Back on the wagon for almost four months combined with biking almost everywhere every day and eating right, I've dropped almost thirty of the fifty lbs. gained, and noticed my cruising speed exerting myself on my 24 year-old mountain bike climbing from ~9mph to ~17 on mostly flat L.A. and a one-way trips up to 8 mi. get me sweaty but exhilarated. Hills are another issue entirely, so once I can handle some real distance at speed and lose some more weight, I'll try to get back in to climbing the trails of the Santa Monica Mountains.

Any L.A. locals recommend some good spots for hammock camping?

reply

Best of luck to you on wagon. I gave up drinking due to health issues brought on by medication. It wasn't hard for me but others have a big hurdle. It's nice though. No stomach aches or pain. And, the wallet enjoys the extra weight. I had a few friends who wouldn't stop pushing it. I had to drop them. If you can't let a buddy alone because of a medical issue, they can have distance.

reply

Thank you. And sorry about its effects on your health and relationships. You find out the difference between true friends and drinking buddies pretty quickly at junctures like that. A few years ago there was different health issue that cost me more than a few friends that brought on the drinking partly due to my loss in faith in humanity. The friends I have now support my health decisions. Funny where life takes you.

reply

A very well rounded list of interests.
I'd bet you are never bored and that's a real good thing for anybody.

reply

Thanks paisan'. A lot of those hobbies are dormant/cyclical, and left off a bunch, too. Wish ammo wasn't so precious these days...

reply

Ammo prices have skyrocketed, it's pretty crazy!

I laid in a good supply of the various major calibers some years ago: 30-30, .35, 30-06, 12 gauge slug, buckshot and birdshot, .22...If you keep it dry it never goes bad. I have about 2,500 rounds stashed away.

Praying is nice but it's best to be ready.

reply

I'm glad I Purchased my lot in 2016. I do most of my shooting for the NG. .22 was really hard to come by at the time. .38 was easier but expensive. 5.56 was a shitshow considering the different qualities out there.

I had a buddy who was up on the best deals. It was nice to have him as a guide.

reply

Sportsman's Guide and Cheaper Than Dirt are two pretty good sites for all sorts of outdoor related gear and ammo at good prices. I'm sorry if that sounded like I'm a shill for these sites, I assure you I'm not, I'm just a satisfied costumer. Check them out.

I went through a period of being really into pens, but not fountain pens. Ballpoints. I had a really cool Parker sterling silver push-button CiselΓ©. They don't make the push-button one anymore, you turn the barrel. I liked the push-button. I also had Montblanc and Waterman ballpoints, it would be really expensive to replace them today. I lost track of what happened to them.

reply

I avoided fountain pens for years as my first few experiences with them felt too "skritchy." One day someone at work had me use their FP (likely a Lamy, as it looked and felt quite modern) and it was a very pleasant experience. I put a Lamy on my wish list, got it, and was off to the races. My work pen was always a Sensa which uses a Fisher Space Pen refill, but as I'm usually in a hurry at work, my handwriting was a mix of print and cursive and was done so quickly, I could barely read it myself, oftentimes.

FPs lend themselves to cursive, which I surprisingly found looked great if I just slowed my pace down a tiny bit. Plus the infinite selection of ink colors and ease of swapping nibs, thicknesses and smoothness varieties got me hooked. Plus there is an ever-growing variety of cheap stylish and functional FPs continuously being released. Only downside is occasional but simple cleaning with water to swap inks or revive a dried up nib.

I go through periods when I experiment with fragrances. I am going through such a period right now. I love the original Polo (green bottle) but it's not a good warm weather fragrance...Pretty soon I'll start using it. I recently got a Truefitt & Hill sample pack, and a Murdock London sample pack. I also check out what's on clearance at Macy's. The discount fragrance websites are good, but often their stuff while authentic is older. I found a website where you can check the age of your purchase via batch code https://www.checkfresh.com/?lang=en

Going into Macy's is a blast to the past, because the first thing you encounter is the fragrance/makeup counters, and the collective aroma seems the same as when my mom took me to Macy's when I was a kid.

I find this site very interesting https://www.fragrantica.com/

reply

Original Polo is a stunner, but agreed, it is a bit strong for anything but cooler weather, preferably outdoors. For a while, Lauren made a much easier to wear version called Polo Modern Reserve. It's much more versatile and "user friendly," and a prime example of a "collectible" frag, as i had it on my "try" list for years before I finally found a bottle that was reasonably priced a few years ago, and gets worn more often, unless I find a perfect cool late fall to early spring day to wear the original where I won't be spending too much close quarters time indoors with other people.

[edit] I use both Fragrantica and Basenotes. They both have their strengths, but I find myself using BN more often, which isn't too often these days, since I have kind of reached a saturation point where I gauge the weather and activities of the day and have at least a few favorites to choose from. Kind of sad the summer heat is waning, as one of my favorites is vintage Kouros on a hot summer day, but only when I'll be outside for the first few hours while it settles down.

He's one of my favorites. One of the few YTers that I'll usually immediately watch as soon as I notice, as his vids are usually quite short. I've learned so much from the guy, but I'll always be grateful to him for letting me know I didn't need to have so light a touch on the tension wrench. Once I learned that lesson from him, my skills leveled up immediately.

Stereo equipment. I don't have a particularly expensive stereo (I have in the past) but I like to keep up with what's new, I subscribe to Stereophile and The Absolute Sound.

Wristwatches. I've pared down my collection to two Rados, one Omega, and a Corum $20 coin watch.

reply

Man, i used to be so big into audiophile gear! Then I learned to be a mixing engineer in big recording studios and learned that every tiny nuance you hear, is decided by us mixing Gods. It all starts there and nothing you buy, no matter how expensive changes that. I went back to good enough gear, and never looked back.

And, NO, vinyl does not sound better. :πŸ˜€

reply

I live in a studio apartment, not a ton of room, so that dictates a lot in terms of set-up.
Totem Acoustic Arro speakers
Bel Canto C5i integrated amp/dac
Bryston BDP-Pi digital player

I went "discless" years ago. No physical media (not that there is anything wrong with that). I have my music stored on an external hard drive that feeds the Bryston.

P.S. Don't you think we should buy good equipment so as better to hear what you mixing Gods have come up with? :)

reply

My simple Jensen record player has shit the bed yet again. I do like the sound of vinyl but these needles are fragile and annoying!

More and more I just go with my Alexa, I have a bunch of them in multiple rooms and the sound quality and track selection is pretty good. You wont find really obscure stuff but I'm listening to ABBA right now (apologies, I like them lol !) and I can request Judas Priest next...it's a good little system.

Pretty cheap too.

reply

no, or, only if you want. we've been living in 20-20k gear for decades now.
back in the day, when audiophile was peaking, it costs a lot to reach that clarity. now, your $99 earbuds have it.
and if you are worried your peak 2000 watt amp isn't cleanly covering a recorded scissors snip sound, you are missing the point of recordings. ;) if you want to hear a snip, grab some real scissors. :D BUT.... I CONTROLLED how that snip was recorded, the high end peak level, the EQ, the room space, the limiting and compression to make it sound BETTER, and LESS realistic.... that's where my heart was ripped out.... knowing the tricks to making that shimmering high hat sound better was all smoke and mirrors.

Yet, collecting cool gear can be fun and fullfilling, so enjoy!

Also, in the next few minutes, we'll have an AI audio option where you say, "Please play my 256bit FLAC collection in the sound of 80's vinyl" and it will sound like that. And you can hear it back in quality anytime you want also.

Painting & admiring art in general

Reading & Writing

Sports (especially NFL and NHL)

Sports betting & poker (and the logic & theory of both) β€” My brother actually plays poker professionally in Vegas and was just in a tournament with one of the biggest names in the poker world. My bro knocked him out of the tournament!

Music (can’t play at all but love listening)

Philosophy & Spirituality (particularly Tibetan Buddhism/Dzogchen and Japanese Zen)

Working out (mostly weights, my cardio is seriously lacking)

And of course, just hanging out with friends, shooting the shit.

Who's your NHL team?

Born and raised in Western NY, I'm a lifelong Sabres fan. Looking forward to snapping the playoff drought this season!

You?

reply

Leafs. Please don't hurt me.

reply

Haha no worries, I actually don't mind the Leafs. Toronto is a lovely city.

reply

Is it because you beat us in the playoffs in '99?

reply

Oh god, please don't remind me of the '99 playoffs. I still have nightmares about us getting screwed out of that Stanley Cup in the finals.

reply

LEAFS AND SABRES?....THOSE ARE ACTUAL TEAMS?...WEIRD.πŸ€”

reply

Buffalo Sabres! We haven't been good in a long time, BUT we do have the prettiest uniforms in the league.

reply

They never should have removed 'Mighty' from the team name. I mean, how is some run-of-the-mill duck more intimidating than a god damn MIGHTY duck?

Just found this cool list of the top 25 hockey uniforms of all time. Mighty Ducks at 3, Sabres at 6. I guess you win this round.

Those are so much better than the jerseys in the Ryan Miller era with the face of the buffalo.

You mean the "Buffaslug"? Those were absolutely terrible.

This one: https://townsquare.media/site/10/files/2022/04/attachment-Hidden-Buffalo-On-Old-Sabres-Jersey-ebay.jpg?w=980&q=75

There's just much going on here.

reply

Ahh okay, the "Goat Head". Yeah, I'm not really a fan of those ones either. Definitely prefer them to the Buffaslug though.

I was slightly confused by your previous comment because IIRC, those red/black jerseys had been pretty much phased out by the start of the Ryan Miller era.

Unfortunately, Buffalo is now kinda bringing them back as an alternate jersey. I believe I read something saying the Sabres will be wearing the Goat Head jerseys like 10-15 times this year. Shame.

edit- Yep. 15 times this season.

Ryan Miller definitely wore it but I wasn't sure how long he had it for before they got rid of it.

Very cool. I've spent a few years learning Italian and I'd like to go back and re-learn, and maybe pick up French, I just don't know if I have the time or concentration skills I had back then lol. German would be third on the list if I could get through those two. How hard is Latin to learn?

Flashback to old school dinner parties. There was nothing my parents liked better than to host or attend a dinner party. People actually dressed nice. Not white tie like in Downton Abbey or Titanic First Class, but the men wore sport coats, turtlenecks, slacks, and shoes not sneakers. The women got dolled up and wore nice dresses. The table was set with flowers and candles. Listening from my room, I could hear the animated conversation, the laughter, people were having a wonderful time.
