πŸŒ•πŸ”΅ Super Blue Moon tonight πŸ”΅πŸŒ•

The term "Blue Moon" has nothing to do with color, but since the 1940s has commonly referred to the second of two full moons that fall in a calendar month; thus, tonight's full moon is defined as a Blue Moon because it is the second full moon of August.

Tonight's Blue Moon will also be a super moon, meaning it will occur during a period when the moon is closer to the Earth, making it appear almost imperceptibly larger in the sky. The moon will rise just after sunset at 7:10 p.m. EDT (2310 GMT) on Wednesday from the eastern horizon.

Looking forward to it! I viewed it through the tree branches in my neighbor's yard from my front porch last night. I've had some spectacular full moon sightings here over the years.

reply

I love looking at the moon. You can bet I'll be outside tonight.

reply

I once came home to the dazzling, unexpected sight of a huge, bright, orange Harvest Moon directly over my house. The next one of these to occur is supposedly around the 29th of next month.

reply

I used to work overnights and I often got lucky at seeing the moon. It wasn't always a full moon, but it was still nice to see.

reply

I will be working my weird hours tonight, in the office that overlooks a street with several bars on it. Full moons usually mean a good chance of free entertainment for us, so we're definitely keeping an eye out tonight!

reply

So true! The weird ones always come out when the moon is fat.

reply

I just hope the sort of people who start bar fights for fun leave their guns at home. And that the Hells Angels find another place to party tonight. Because yeah, earlier this year there was a weekend when all the Hell's Angels had a big event nearby, and dozens of them came to our local bars! And didn't cause any trouble that I heard about.

Damn, I never liked bars and clubs, even when I was a problem drinker, but those bars really are a good reminder that really life IS more fun when you're sober.

reply

Do they really cause loads of trouble or is that just what I've seen in films?

reply

They didn't cause any trouble when they were in town, and I doubt any of the local barflies and douches would mess with them.

And that's about all I know, sorry.

reply

I don't like bars, either. But I still recall one time when I went to one with my roommate. She and I were meeting a couple of guy friends before we all went to the stock car races nearby that night. The guys happened to get the bar first, and since they were a lot of fun and rather good-looking, a couple of women were all over them, so to speak. We walked in and approached our friends' table, and those two women glared at us as if we were invading their territory. One of them even challenged us to "step outside." Thankfully, the guys intervened and we left shortly afterwards.

I call it my "Laverne & Shirley" moment. πŸ˜† I also get a good laugh when I recall those women's faces when the guys greeted us in a very "friendly" way, shall we say? Priceless.

First responders have known about this for decades, actually train to be prepared for it. I live in between two major traffic arteries they use and I've grown accustomed to the increase of sirens I hear during the time of the full moon. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qae25976UgA 😁

reply

Yeah I've looked it up before. There's no scientific proof but I work with the public and we always know when a full moon is due.

I feel bad for the first responders!

reply

Same here! The weirdos and wackos DO come out during a full moon.

reply

I worked for London's Metropolitan Police for a time, and they always said the same thing. Always had more of their public order units patrolling or at least on standby.

reply

It looks lovely too 😊, I love the night sky. It's actually stopped raining today so we have a nice clear sky to see it πŸ€—

reply

Did you know?

Know the moonrise and moonset times. The Full Moon rises in the evening and sets in the morning.
Different Moon phases have different rise and set times . For example, the First Quarter Moon rises at midday and can be seen against the blue day sky.

I only recently learned this, meaning you have to know those times if you want to view the moon.

And there won't be another Super Blue Moon until 2037.

reply

Oh dear. This might be my last Super Blue Moon ever. πŸ˜”

reply

I'll be 87, but I'm planning on seeing it. LOL

reply

i took a look through the binoculars. just stunning.

reply

It's beautiful!

reply

I don't think that applies to here, in Australia, but very interesting to note, I'll try to remember this next August.
