What did you watch on the FIRST week of 2023?(CLOSED)

Let it be glorious, let it be good, let it be ours.

Mine:

Sleight (2016 TV): “A young street magician is left to care for his little sister after their parents' death, and turns to illegal activities to keep a roof over their heads. When he gets in too deep, his sister is kidnapped and he is forced to use his magic and brilliant mind to save her.” A neat little independent film this was. But then again, African-American gangster is one of my all-time favourite sub-genre. My rating: 6.5/10

No time to die (2021 DVD): My father lent me this DVD during the holidays; he’s a huge Bond fan, got the collection and even invested a few hundred dollars to buy the watch. As for me, I remember doing an essay on Ian Fleming in high school and became a mild fan. Playing Golden eye on Nintendo64 also helped fortifying my bond with, well, Bond. Now that being said, I sometimes feel like I’m built different then the mass when it come to films because I might be the only person thinking this is Craig’s best James Bond movie and one of the best of them all. I found the action to be spectacular, raw and inventive (especially considering the many James Bond movies already done, and the countless other films of the genre. One scene and one scene only made absolutely no sense but out of almost 3hours of material, this is remarkable), the characters they brought back were used wisely and the new characters were lots of fun. I will end by adding that the first 10 minutes were gold and I didn’t mind the ending at all. My rating: 8.5/10

The birds (1963 TV): Many years ago I had only seen the scene in the phone booth and it made me feel like this movie would suck. It didn’t! There are many good scenes, some great shots, interesting characters and romance and… many many birds. Some parts also made me laugh. Lots of unintentional humour in there. My rating: 7/10

Nebraska (2013 TV) After 5 minutes my wife made me realised we already watched this movie. Then I found my review of jan/2018 which went like this: “The acting was good and the depiction of the main character was true and simple. All characters in this movie are common ordinary people and in the end I didn’t find that the content brought anything really interesting to the table. It was well done, but that’s it. I bet that a week from now all I’ll remember from this film is the wife because she has one of the foulest mouths. Good for one viewing. 6/10”. Thing is, after 15 minutes I realized that indeed, I didn’t remember a lot of scenes and it looked better than a 6/10. So we watched it all over again and indeed, my rating was a bit off, this is a 7/10.

Le bruit des arbres (2015 TV): Most French Canadian folks said the movie is competently made but they failed to connect with the characters. I can’t say the same for me. The movie is great, that’s true, but I did feel for the characters and think this is a hidden gem of Quebec’s culture. 8/10

Greetings. Happy 2023
Of your I have only seen The Birds 7/10. I have always found the short story it's based on to be much creepier.

My Week:
RRR (2022) 9/10
Holy crap! What did I just watch? Amazingly entertaining.

Shedim (2022) 6/10
This was a pretty interesting mocumentary. I didn't really have any idea where it was going. I think it did drag in parts, and could have had a shorter running time. I do think that there could have been a little more tension building. I thought the acting was good, and the lore was intriguing, but I'm not sure that the execution was as good as it could have been.

Hell House LLC III: Lake of Fire (2019) 7/10
Least favourite of the three, but I still enjoy watching it. It has a couple creepy moments, and it does wrap up the story. If I really stop to think about the story, it falls apart and requires a lot of suspension of disbelief, but for some reason I just don't really care. The end is a little cringe, but it's fun. I will probably continue to keep watching these movies for many years to come.

As Above, So Below (2014) 7/10
I do seem to like this movie a little more each time I see it. I think it's really well made, and acted. I am also a fan of the Divine Comedy so I think that helps with making sense of what is happening, and what moments are supposed to represent. As a fan of found footage films, I'm not sure this is one that benefited from the style. I liked the claustrophobic atmosphere, and filming in the catacombs is amazing. Not everything works or makes sense, but I think it's an enjoyable watch.

Center Stage (2000) 8/10
Absolute guilty pleasure movie. It's so ridiculous, but the dancing is so much fun to watch.

Crazy Rich Asians (2018) 9/10
Today seems to be a guilty pleasure rewatch day. I love me a good romcom, and I do seem to love this movie.

Apocalyptic (2014) 6/10
Wanted to see this one again as I remembered very little about it other than I thought it was well done. The acting is pretty decent, especially for what I assume to be a very low budget film. There aren't really any new ideas here, but the familiar is still presented in an interesting way. The topic is slightly disturbing, but there isn't really anything scary here. Nice effort but it's not the most memorable.

Phantasm II (1988) 7/10
So it looks like the last time I watched this was a couple of years ago, and honestly watching it again there is still so much I didn't remember. The first one is such a fever dream, and this one while not as trippy, is a mess of continuity that doesn't really make sense, but it's full of action and is fun to watch.

The Tunnel (2011) 6.5/10
I've seen this 3 or 4 times now, and as I was watching As Above, So Below earlier this week I was waiting for a scene that didn't show up. I then realized that that scene was from this movie so I thought I'd watch it again. It's a pretty solid FF/mocumentary style film. It's a shame it never really had a conventional release as I've only ever seen it on youtube and the image is a little crappy. I think it's an interesting story. The pacing is a little slow, but I don't really find it boring. I think it's a decent addition to to genre. 6.5/10

Irul: Ghost Hotel (2021) 5/10
There really isn't anything here that is new. It pretty much follows the formula, point by point. It does take a really long time to get going, but there is some pretty scenery, and the location is creepy. I do hate harping on this, but if we are watching the footage and not looking through the camera, we shouldn't see a low battery symbol flashing. I also am not a fan of the cheap looking "static" effect used in a lot of these POV Horror films. The acting was okay. I wasn't sucked in by the story, there are a lot of moments that don't really make sense to me as to how much time has passed since the previous scene. This isn't awful, but I've seen much better.

The Menu (2022) 8/10
I haven't been this enthralled with a movie in a while. I didn't read anything about it before I watched it so I had no idea what to expect. The biting satire was for more than just the halibut. Okay, that was a bad pun, but I really enjoyed this. That isn't to say that this isn't without its flaws or problems with some of the commentary, but my ratings are based on how much I like a movie.

Choose or Die (2022) 4/10
Can't say I was a fan of this one. I didn't really feel any tension, and I found it pretty boring.

reply

Yeah, Choose or die had a few qualities about it that made me stick until the end but overall, not recommendable. 5/10

reply

Happy new year!

No time to die 8/10
The birds 9/10
Nebraska 8/10

I watched:

Marcel the Shell with Shoes On 2021 9/10 A beautiful, charming, and sweet film with one of the most adorable characters in the history of cinema.

Wild Girl 1932 6/10 Some interesting moments, but overall it was just alright.

The Dog Lover’s Guide to Dating 2023 6/10 I liked the actors and thought they had nice chemistry, but I didn't find the story all that interesting.

Bullet Train 2022 7/10 Some fun moments.

The Bad Guys 2022 7/10 This was fairly clever and amusing.

Dead Man’s Letters 1986 7/10 The idea of the film is an interesting one, but the execution of it only partially worked for me.

Deep End 1970 7/10 Some great moments. Jane Asher is fantastic.

Me and My Gal 1932 6/10 I liked the actors, but the story didn't completely work for me.

Aftersun 2022 8/10 Very good performances from Paul Mescal and Frankie Corio in this well written, beautiful film.

Dog Day Afternoon 1975 (rewatch) 9/10 This is a classic and a terrific film. Al Pacino is fantastic.

The Raid 2011 5/10 Didn't do much for me. This is supposedly one of the best films of the decade, but it seems like a pretty basic and generic action movie.

Jurassic World Dominion 2022 6/10 The weakest entry in the Jurassic series, but still worth watching with some good moments.

World of Tomorrow 2015 8/10 This was interesting. I loved the character of Emily Prime and the animation is adorable.

The Thief of Bagdad 1940 7/10 Some fun and cool visuals.

Trouble in Paradise 1932 6/10 Some amusing moments, but not as funny or entertaining as I would have expected.

Great Expectations 1946 6/10 A nice looking film with decent performances, but I didn't find it very interesting or entertaining.

The Menu 2022 8/10 This was pretty entertaining. With good performances and an interesting, sharply written screenplay, The Menu is a delicious treat.

Incendies 2010 6/10 A couple powerful moments but for the most part this was slow and uninteresting. Vastly overrated and a let down.

DC League of Super-Pets 2022 8/10 This was cute and fun. I really liked the animation.

The Dark Corner 6/10 1946 Performances were fine, but the story wasn't very interesting. It felt like the film was lacking something.

Call Northside 777 1948 7/10 James Stewart is very good in this fine film noir.

Léontine Keeps House 1912 8/10 This was fun and made me laugh out loud.

Love and Music 1911 7/10 This was amusing.

Fear of Shadows 1911 5/10 I didn't find this one as entertaining.

Valley of the Dolls (rewatch) 1967 8/10 . I thought Mark Robson did a good job directing the film. It's a slick, glossy film with a lot of style.

Candyman 1992 (rewatch) 9/10 This is a terrific film, thrilling, smart, and entertaining. Tony Todd gives a fantastic, iconic performance as Candyman.

M3GAN 2023 8/10 This was fun and entertaining.

An Interview with God 2018 7/10 This was fairly interesting.

Meet Cute 2022 6/10 This was somewhat amusing, although not everything worked.

Perfect Harmony 2022 7/10 This was nice and I liked the leads.

The Northman 2022 6/10 I really liked the look of the film, but the story didn't do much for me. It also felt longer than it needed to be.

Lost Highway 1997 7/10 There are some fantastic, interesting moments here, but overall this only partly worked for me. It feels a little too long at times. I did like the performances though.

The Wedding Veil Expectations 2023 6/10 I like Lacey and the other ladies, but the story didn't do much for me. This one wasn't as good as the first three Wedding Veil movies.

Lost highway: Big nope! 4/10 (this week I watched a David Lynch movie and it became my favourite movie of his. care to take a guess before I post my review tonight?)

I bought The Northman for almost 20$. I hope I’ll enjoy it more than you did.

Do you own ‘Gone With The Pope?’
It was really hard to find for years.

I finally saw it at a horror/thriller show some years ago and boy oh boy was it fun!

Massacre Mafia Style is currently on YouTube, that’s Duke Mitchell’s other good gangster movie.
It’s very good.

reply

I own Massacre Mafia Style on dvd or Blu-ray but I don’t have Gone With the Pope. It’s showing currently on Arrow Streaming service, which is my favorite streaming channel.

Duke Mitchell was such an interesting person.

reply

He sure was!
From what I’ve read he was a big local celebrity and lounge act singer in Florida. Funny guy, I liked his two Mob movies a lot.

reply

There is another guy who wrote, directed, acted and just about everything else in his low budget films that I really like also. His name is escaping me, but Aftermath is one of the films and his character’s name was Newman. He even got Sid Haig to be the bad guy in one of his movies. Have you seen them?

I’ll look him up.

reply

Ha!
I just found it uncut on YouTube.
No, I never heard of the guy but I do love goofy, trashy movies👍

Steve Barnett was the guy that wrote, directed and starred.
Good call Amigo, I’ll watch this tonight after football.

reply

It’s post apocalyptic low budget glory. Let me know what ya think.

reply

Never heard of yours.

At least we both make efforts to watch at least one movie per week that the other is susceptible to have seen before. Hehe

reply

We really do have opposite taste in film, but some how nearly every week there is one crossover. Lol 👍

Happy New Year! I rewatched The Birds not too long ago. It still gets 8/10 from me. Nebraska - 7/10.

Not necessarily in the past week, but very recently I've watched:
It's a Wonderful Life (1946) 10/10. It's not Christmas without this one.
Home Alone (1990) 8/10. It's become a holiday time tradition.
The Santa Clause (1994) 7/10. Also a tradition.
Mr. Holland's Opus (1995) 8/10. The uplifting ending gets me every time.
The Pelican Brief (1993) 7/10. I like the suspense.
Roman Holiday - re-watch (1953) 9/10. One of my all-time favorites. Audrey Hepburn is amazing.
No Place Like Home (1989 TV movie) 7/10. Makes you realize how easy it is to become homeless.
Crazy From the Heart (1991 TV movie) 9/10. In my book, Christine Lahti is underrated.

Good stuff!

It's a Wonderful Life (1946) 9/10

Home Alone (1990) 8.5/10

The Santa Clause: 7.5/10

Slash/Back 2022 6/10 When Maika and her ragtag friends discover an alien invasion in their tiny arctic hamlet, it's up to them to save the day. Utilizing their makeshift weapons and horror movie knowledge, the aliens realize you don't mess with girls from Pang.

I think they were going for the Goonies meets the Thing but it didn't quite work out. I was excited when it started because the scenery was really unique, but the acting, story and special effects didn't quite get it done. Still a nice effort

reply

It does look interesting.

Argo (2012) - this would be great if it was fiction. they intentionally downplayed the candian angle who were the real heroes. 6.5/10

You Only Live Once (1937) - one of the first film noir movies and it's not a bad one with a young henry fonda. worth the watch. some scenes were cut because they were seen as too violent. 7/10

Yesterday (2019) - nice movie. i thought they could have done more with the concept of the beatles never existing. like the john lennon touch at the end. 6.5/10

reply

Argo: 7.5/10

Yesterday: I recorded it on my PVR last week!

Happy 2023, let's have a good year!

No Time To Die is on my list.

This last week I watched:

On Netflix:
Finished SE01 of 1899. I liked it better than Dark, so I was sad to hear about it's cancellation.
Finished the last season of Paradise PD, and started watching Farzar. Silly humour...

Winter's Bone (2010): Jennifer Lawrence before The Hunger Games. Nice cinematography, pretty boring story. But at least it's short (100 min).

Sonic the Hedgehog (2020): Some classic Jim Carrey acting, I missed it. Other than that, forgettable with a few good laughs.

reply

Winter's Bone: I bought the DVD 5$ in a corner store many years ago. Need to watch it….

Sonic the Hedgehog: 7.5/10

Star Wars (1977)
The Empire Strikes Back (1980)
Return of the Jedi (1983)

I always start the new year with the original trilogy of Star Wars.

Avatar: The Way of Water (2022)

Finally saw this. It was enjoyable. Although a bit clichéd.

reply
