What did you watch on the FIRST week of 2023?(CLOSED)

Let it be glorious, let it be good, let it be ours.

Mine:

Sleight (2016 TV): “A young street magician is left to care for his little sister after their parents' death, and turns to illegal activities to keep a roof over their heads. When he gets in too deep, his sister is kidnapped and he is forced to use his magic and brilliant mind to save her.” A neat little independent film this was. But then again, African-American gangster is one of my all-time favourite sub-genre. My rating: 6.5/10

No time to die (2021 DVD): My father lent me this DVD during the holidays; he’s a huge Bond fan, got the collection and even invested a few hundred dollars to buy the watch. As for me, I remember doing an essay on Ian Fleming in high school and became a mild fan. Playing Golden eye on Nintendo64 also helped fortifying my bond with, well, Bond. Now that being said, I sometimes feel like I’m built different then the mass when it come to films because I might be the only person thinking this is Craig’s best James Bond movie and one of the best of them all. I found the action to be spectacular, raw and inventive (especially considering the many James Bond movies already done, and the countless other films of the genre. One scene and one scene only made absolutely no sense but out of almost 3hours of material, this is remarkable), the characters they brought back were used wisely and the new characters were lots of fun. I will end by adding that the first 10 minutes were gold and I didn’t mind the ending at all. My rating: 8.5/10

The birds (1963 TV): Many years ago I had only seen the scene in the phone booth and it made me feel like this movie would suck. It didn’t! There are many good scenes, some great shots, interesting characters and romance and… many many birds. Some parts also made me laugh. Lots of unintentional humour in there. My rating: 7/10

Nebraska (2013 TV) After 5 minutes my wife made me realised we already watched this movie. Then I found my review of jan/2018 which went like this: “The acting was good and the depiction of the main character was true and simple. All characters in this movie are common ordinary people and in the end I didn’t find that the content brought anything really interesting to the table. It was well done, but that’s it. I bet that a week from now all I’ll remember from this film is the wife because she has one of the foulest mouths. Good for one viewing. 6/10”. Thing is, after 15 minutes I realized that indeed, I didn’t remember a lot of scenes and it looked better than a 6/10. So we watched it all over again and indeed, my rating was a bit off, this is a 7/10.

Le bruit des arbres (2015 TV): Most French Canadian folks said the movie is competently made but they failed to connect with the characters. I can’t say the same for me. The movie is great, that’s true, but I did feel for the characters and think this is a hidden gem of Quebec’s culture. 8/10

Happy New Year!

Movies

-Murder on the Orient Express (1974)
I'm not a big fan of the story, but I just find Finney unbearable as Poirot.

-Death on the Nile (1978)
My favourite of the the theatrical movies. Ustinov isn't the perfect Poirot, but he's entertaining enough.

-Evil under the Sun (1982)
This movie is a little too campy at times and I don't agree with some of the changes they made. Otherwise, I still prefer it over Murder on the Orient Express.

-Batman Returns (1992)
Saw this one on the big screen. Probably my favorite Batman movie. Pfeiffer is an awesome Catwoman and DeVito did more with his role than Nicholson did in the first movie. Keaton is a good Batman, although he's still not really Bruce Wayne to me. I'd say the biggest flaw is that it has too many characters and storylines going on. Christopher Walken's non-canon character wasn't needed.

TV Series

-The Bold and the Beautiful - marathon of very old episodes

1. Downton Abbey: A New Era (2022)
The story of the Downton Abbey family and friends continues..
Still pretty good.

2. Marry Me (2022)
This one was a romantic comedy with Jennifer Lopez and Owen Wilson. It follows your standard RomCom plot, except instead of the rich and famous successful guy pursuing the plain girl, it's the other way around. Really good movie if you like romantic comedies.

3. My Best Friend's Wedding (1997)
Old Julia Roberts movie about a woman who is trying to sabotage her best friend's wedding because she's in love with him. It was a good movie, but the ending was not what I expected.

4. Four Weddings and a Funeral (1994)
This was a British (romantic?) comedy with Hugh Grant. This one I remembered from when I was a kid. It was a popular movie, but I never felt the need to watch it. I was feeling kind of nostalgic and wanted to watch something from the early 90's that I never watched before. So I chose this. This one was ok. It was kind of meh to be honest. Sometimes I just don't vibe with the British style/humor. But it had a good ending. Andie MacDowell was in it, and she was always great (she's also pretty hot).

I might have seen your last one but don’t quite remember.

Hugh Grant keeps on going from wedding to wedding and always running into the same girl (Andie MacDowell) that he has fallen in love with.
