What was the worst year of your life?
I'm gonna say 2003. I didn't have the best experience in high school.
shareI'm gonna say 2003. I didn't have the best experience in high school.
share1974. moving to toronto
share1999. I was fired by the Police Academy for getting in a few perfectly reasonable fist fights during Academy training.
It was just boys being boys, we were all big lads.
You’d figure the Police Force would’ve valued a guy that jumped into a fight and could beat guys up and taKe his bloody licks with no complaints….it’s only fair to bleed after a bad fight.
Anyway, I got fired. I never got to be a Cop, I’d probably have gotten in trouble anyway.
2007. My stomach ulcer burst & I legit almost died.
Also, while I was in the hospital, I got diagnosed with Pumonary Tuberculosis.
I got so thin, I kinda looked like Christian Bale's character in The Machinist 🤣
2009 I had health issue after health issue. I also had two relatives die at fairly young ages.
shareSorry to hear that, I’m very happy you are better now, you are a good Buddy.
Im sorry about your relatives too. That’s very hard Amigo, there’s nothing worse than that.
Thanks, Yonks. Some things I'm better with. I still got some heart issues as you're aware and my tinnitus hasn't gotten any better. It hasn't gotten any worse either, so I guess that's a positive.
share2017 - house fire meant we were displaced for a year. The upside: nobody died, we just lost stuff, everything was replaced and the house was remodelled.
shareThat’s terrible. Did you ever learn from the investigators what caused it?
shareYep! It was the box of the soap and the suds (I’m reliably informed that it’s called a washer dryer). The missus put a load on before we went out to a petting zoo. Upon arrival I get a phone call from my neighbour saying, “You better get home mate, your house is on fire!”
Luckily he and his wife were unloading their car of shopping when they heard what they thought was a car alarm (it was in fact our fire alarm), then he saw smoke billowing from the house and called the fire brigade, who luckily arrived within 5 minutes.
By the time I arrived home, it was all over. The kitchen was completely torched and 90% of the house was smoke damaged (thankfully not the vinyl or comic collection). I’ve still got a few photos of the carnage.
The offending item was taken by the insurance forensic department and it turned out that it was a manufacturer’s electrical fault, so they said claim for whatever you like because the manufacturer (who admitted liability) would be footing the bill.
The insurers put us up in a 5 bedroom house literally around the corner from where we lived. The rent came to £20000 ($24000), all paid for by the insurance.
The initial claim came to £500,000 ($603,000), then our insurers solicitors said we could sue the company for negligence, which we did and they didn’t fight, as it was an open and shut case, although the pay out for that was not as much as you would imagine because there were no injuries.
Moral of the story: -
1. Only use appliances during the day whilst you’re at home.
2. Get decent insurance.
Probably 2001 for me. I've battled with long periods of depression during my life and I really let myself get into a very bad state in 2001. I just felt miserable the whole year. How I wish I'd have handled things differently and not let myself get to that point!
shareBad news to hear, I have several depressed people I love at my work. Professional therapy and modern medication can really make a huge difference in balancing the highs and lows from what I’ve been told.
You should feel OK asking for help, that’s a very serious condition.
You would be wise to seek help.
Sorry, that’s awful.
Be well Buddy, talk to a pro👍
