Okay, I'm glad that we agree that dangers to society should be removed so they can do no more harm. That's important. But I don't agree that there's any point to sending people like this child-rapist-and-murderer to a mental hospital, people who do things aren't necessarily mentally ill, that is, they do not have the kind of mental illnesses that the psychiatric professions can treat. FYI I've worked in the helping professions for a long time and have a reasonable idea of what mental health treatment can and can't do, and what they can't do is change someone who has an ingrained "clinical lack of empathy (no conscience or remorse)", or who likes harming others. All they can do with such people is teach them to behave more normally, which isn't necessarily beneficial to society. Mentals hospitals should be either from the intractably mentally ill, or for people who can be helped by their stay, and not as a dumping ground for the evil. The mentally ill have enough troubles without the irredeemably around.
But yeah, as far as responsibility goes, I'm no philosopher! I'm just old and had a lot of challenges of my own, and my work has put me in contact with people who've had to deal with absolutely horrendous difficulties and tragedies. And the fact that most people who have had to deal with the worst life has to offer aren't mean or unreasonably angry (just selfish because they have to be), they're just trying to live their lives and do no harm. That's given me less and less patience with those who say that their personal problems drove them to crime, I've seen others deal with worse and they haven't turned to crime!
