Movies you expected nothing from, but were really good.

Dread (2009) I watched this today. Thought I'd turn it off after 30 minutes, but it was really good. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nlZv2NForrY

Interesting. I've heard of it. I don't usually like westerns, but I'll add it to my watchlist.

Chato's Land (1972)

That ones available on Tubi, so I added it. I spent a lot of today, creating Imdb lists for each channel, tubi, prime, Flex, freevee and pluto. Now when I want to watch a movie on those free channels, I just add it to my list.

That IS a good movie. Bronson was remarkably buff in it, considering he was in his 50s, from what I remember.

reply

full of recognizable character actors - jack palance, james whitmore, ralph waite and victor french.

reply

Forgot about that. This inspired me to do a rewatch. Gonna look it up on tubi. Perfect for a rainy Friday night, the beginning of a long, major holiday weekend.

And Richard Basehart. There's a name I haven't seen in quite a while.

reply

it was funny seeing ralph waite from the waltons playing the nasty guy.

reply

Exactly! He was so despicable in that. A testament to good acting.

Dredd (12)

A hard bitten cop teams up with a young trainee officer to
murder a drug-dealing crew in a high tower block…Yes, I meant murder.

No mercy given…these assholes are getting chucked off the 50th story.

Yeah when I was looking at this one, I saw that. I actually loved it. The Stallone version and the remake. This Dread was about the acting, strange in horror movie, but it was. I'll say this, all 3 leads went on to very big things in tv and movies.

School of Rock (2003) I didn't think this was my kind of movie, but I really enjoyed it.

reply

Yes, I also remember being pleasantly surprised by this one,

Awesome movie. πŸ‘πŸ‘

Ready or Not (2019)

We watched it to get out of the heat basically. Thought it was going to be cheap horror like Leprechaun. We were pleasantly surprised. Just the right amount of comedy and taking itself seriously.

This is a great story. "Raiders of the Lost Ark" is my favorite movie. What a huge surprise. I can't imagine this 10/10 movie being seasoned with the spice of low expectations. How perfect.

A student of my father's dropped by our house raving about Raiders. My mom took me to see it immediately. Of course I was changed for life by it. My mother really had to bite down to get through it though. She had a delicate sensibility to her that would cause her to need a cold compress at the sight of a bloodless shooting on a TV show. Bless her for doing that on that magical day.

Nocturnal Animals (2016)

The opening scene had me wondering what the hell kind of movie I'd just gotten myself into, but I was glued to the screen until the end.
