Official Media Purchases Thread 📼 📀 💽

It looks like Kowalski had a good recent haul so here’s what I’ve got so far this year.

Has anyone else made any good physical media purchases?

Bought some movies today. I picked up:

Giallo Essentials black edition blu ray set
For All Mankind Criterion 4K/blu ray (they didn’t have the blu ray only edition in stock so I got that one even though I don’t have a 4K player)
Mad Doctor of Blood Island blu ray (Severin)

Smile Before Death
The Killer Reserved Nine Seats
The Weapon the Hour the Motive

If that’s the titles included, then I haven’t seen any of them.

Let me know your ratings!

reply

Smile Before Death was entertaining, sexy fun. 7/10. Recommended.

reply

Added! 👍

reply

I watched The Killer Reserved Nine Seats today. It was pretty good, although not as fun as Smile Before Death. 7/10 would be my rating, definitely worth checking that one out too.

I watched The Weapon the Hour the Motive today. I would rate it a 7/10. It had an interesting story, was pretty entertaining, and had some nice moments. It would rank it slightly below Smile Before Death and slightly above The Killer Reserved Nine Seats. This is a good set and I would recommend it.

My most recent DVD purchases

Black Sails: The Complete Series
Watchmen: Director's Cut (2009)
The Disappearance of Alice Creed (2009)
Cop Land (1997)
Men at Work (1990)

reply

Men at Work - isn’t that the one where Keith David shoots someone with a BB gun?

reply

Yes that's the movie and Charlie Sheen shoots his neighbor with it too

reply

Excellent!

reply

I've got a 30% off coupon for Cinema 1 (the store I like to buy movies at) so I might go tomorrow and use it. Any recommendations as to what blu ray(s) I should use my 30% off coupon for?

reply

If I may cut in try to buy Night Of The Comet (84)

Great horror comedy…Kelli Maroney in that cheerleader outfit aiming the Uzi has been my phone-screen wallpaper on and off for years❤️

reply

Sounds like fun. I might buy something more expensive though like a box set so I can save more with my coupon.

reply

These are my box set recommendations:

Jean Rollin - The Vampire Films Set
https://www.amazon.com/Jean-Rollin-Vampire-Films-Blu-ray/dp/B00H27PE3W

The Jess Franco Collection

The Italian Crime Collection - Fernando Di Leo

Macabre Visions: The Films of Mario Bava

reply

Cool, thanks for the recommendations.

I have Miami Connection and Righting Wrongs coming in the mail from Vinegar Syndrome. It's supposed to arrive by Saturday.

reply

Hell yeah! I have a nice system in my truck with an amp on 2 - 12s and Dragon Sound gets played a lot on the way to work. Anyone who hasn’t seen Miami Connection needs to watch it ASAP.

Oh, and remember “ Only through the elimination of violence can we achieve world peace.”

reply

The 4K release will sit well right next to my Drafthouse Blu-ray release.

reply

Have you seen Raw Force (1982) also released by Vinegar Syndrome?

reply

Yep I’ve got that one too.

reply

I like your movie style sir. 💯👍💯👍💯👍

reply

I've grown my Vinegar Syndrome collection a lot in recent years and that includes the Peekarama movies.

reply

I had a 30% off coupon for Cinema 1 (the store in the mall I like to buy movies at) so I got the Eurocrypt of Christopher Lee volume 2 blu ray box set. It includes:

Uncle Was a Vampire
The Secret of the Red Orchid
Dark Places
Dracula and Son
Murder Story

plus alternate cuts, audio commentaries, interviews, a bonus CD, and a 100 page book.

reply

That sounds great. I’ve always liked Christopher Lee in whatever I’ve seen him in, but recently I have been watching lots of Hammer Horror and I have a new appreciation for his acting. I’ve also rediscovered Peter Cushing who I think was just wonderful. Please let me know if any of the films in that set are worth watching.

reply

So far the first two weren’t great. Uncle was a Vampire 5/10
The Secret of the Red Orchid 6/10

reply

The next two were a little better:
Dark Places 6/10
Dracula and Son 6/10

So far, I would rank Dracula and Son as the best in the set with Dark Places second best.

reply

My favourite store, Cinema 1, was having a big anniversary sale so I picked up some new blu rays. I got:

The Herschell Gordon Lewis feast box set
American Horror Project volume 1 box set
Love Slaves of the Amazons
Slap Shot
Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory

reply

Love Slaves of the Amazons is one I am going to have to look up. So are you just now getting a physical copy of Willie Wonka?

reply

Yes, Willy Wonka was on sale for 6.99. I like it, but never previously felt the urge to buy it.

reply

ANY PURCHASE THAT INCLUDES A LITTLE NEWMAN IS APPROVED BY ME.👍🏾

reply

Thanks. I'm glad you approve.

reply

It’s been a while since I picked up any movies, but today The Vampire’s Kiss (1989) came in off EBay.

Has anyone else bought any physical media lately?

reply

Yep:

X
Last night in Soho
Everything everywhere all at once
fatman
Dune
boss level
sonic the hedgehog 2
Byzantium
Chopper
Boy A
Rabbit Hole
Man of tai-chi
A soldiers story

Started to work full time again and treated myself

reply

Good for you! It’s always fun buying movies. 👍

reply

Nice pickups!

reply

Yeah, except I was so excited to buy X because of the positive feedback I got (from you included) and we’ll have a fight you and I next Sunday when I post my review.

Grrrrr

reply

I look forward to our fight.

reply

Do you two have a different movie style?😀

reply

We have agreed on some movies in the past, but also disagreed on others, so I'm not sure.

reply

So since your into giallo, have you seen any Eurocrime yet?

reply

I think I have seen a couple, but not a lot.

reply

There probably just as many Eurocrime films out there as giallo, and by many of the same actors and directors. Check them out if your ever looking for another cool Italian genre.

reply

Cool. I will check them out.

reply

Allaby is ten times the movie buff I am. While we both can enjoy trivial as much as very deep stuff, he has a wider range especially for older movies.

But X is a very average movie and that’s 💯

reply

I thought X was above average and a lot of fun. I would rank it as the 4th best film of the year.

reply

Today I picked up:

the Stray Cat Rock Collection (Arrow)
Max and the Junkmen (Kino)
The Deadly Trap (Kino)

reply

Kino…. Have you looked into the Kino Cult streaming channel? If it’s anything like Arrow Streaming I would sign up immediately.

reply

Yes, I've watched a few things on there. It's free with ads. I don't think it is as good as Arrow streaming, but it has some fun stuff on it.
