Regardless of where the movie was actually filmed, have you ever been to a place where a film was set? Where was it and how did it compare to the movie?
I saw "Picnic at Hanging Rock" at Hanging Rock. The place has a sinister vibe about it. They showed the film on the back of a flat bed truck. There were some girls in the audience who were dressed in period costume. At the end of the film they decided or perhaps it was coincidence that they would walk out from the trees behind the truck.
Girls dressed in white appearing out of the darkness! Quite eerie and yet wonderfully cheesy.
I was there last week! Birdwatching, just like the old lady in the movie did 70 years ago.
Let's see, where have I been that they've shot movies? Venice, the Vatican, Paris, Westminster Abbey and the Tower of London, the Kilauea volcano in Hawaii, the Cal Tech campus where "The Big Bang Theory" takes place, Beverly Hills and Rodeo Drive, the Owens Valley and Lone Pine where a bazillion cowboy movies were shot (as well as "Iron Man" and "Gladiator"), Griffith Park including the observatory (closed), the "batcave" in the Hollywood Hills, and of course...
The Vasquez Rocks outside of Los Angeles, where they shot a dozen "Star Trek" episodes.
Some of the buildings used for the movie were in Bodega, a different town about 10 miles away, and Hitchcock used a glass painting for long shots that made the town of Bodega Bay seem 2-3x larger than it was. The Tides are still there, the buildings on a wharf where the restaurant was and the fire started, but it's all been redone and looks very different.
Bodega Bay was and is a birding hotspot, and I always meet other birders there, in the places around the bay where birders go. It's a fairly long drive for me but I go 3-4 times a year, it's such a lovely place, and I like joining the secret society of birders at their outdoor hangouts.
In 1987 I was living in this artist commune in Scottsdale. It had a working foundry that my husband was running for Paolo Solari.
So we went for the cash, to let these folks make a movie on the grounds and in the buildings. Was a 6 week nightmare. But the food was good (we were all starving)
Starred David Birney. Anyone remember him? He was nice.
The place got tore up, and I was glad when they left. I was pregnant and miserable.
From the trivia section;
The film was shot in an organic architectural development in Arizona called Arcosanti. Scenes were also shot in Cosanti, just outside Scottsdale, and in the Tonto National Forest. Some Arcosanti residents appeared as extras.
WOW...I REMEMBER THAT MOVIE FROM THE VIDEO STORE GROWING UP...MY MOM AND I RENTED IT FOR ONE OF OUR SATURDAY NIGHT HORRO & SCI FI MARATHONS...I HAVE NO MEMORY OF THE FILM ITSELF THOUGH.
Gregory Peck and Audrey Hepburn go someplace where there is this huge god/demon, it has a hole in it shaped liked a mouth, you stick your hand in the mouth, and if you lie something bites your hand.
