"Woke" movies

"Woke" movies have been around forever. The problem normal people have with them today is that it SEEMS like every movie at the movie theater (and because of COVID, there's not a lot, in case you haven't noticed--they want us at home, on our couches, watching their crap on a streaming service) is "woke," meaning, it's intention is to first lecture and THEN entertain. The average person HATES this kind of storytelling. People used to tolerate stuff like Billy Jack because, while it lectured about bigotry, it was, first and foremost, entertaining. This is the lesson modern Hollywood needs to learn. I look at the movie listings for the only theater in my town and I want to vomit. Nothing looks appealing.

reply

I don't like being preached at in general. I like a lot of old movies and I am not into the recruiting/morale boosting films of the 40's either. Especially when, like with Woke films now the story is sacrificed for the sake of the propaganda.

And yes Woke is just everywhere now. It's boring.

reply

LMAO

reply

"the story is sacrificed for the sake of the propaganda."

example??

reply

Seriously?

reply

yes

reply

Open your eyes. Start to think for yourself.

reply

this "the story is sacrificed" is a whole new level of woke whining .
You've taken it up a notch

so i just wondered if you could actually name a movie that is not just so-called-woke
but also "the story is sacrificed" to make it woke

reply

I feel I can't dumb things down enough for you to understand. There's no point in me wasting anymore energy here.

The tv shows and films like this are everywhere. You are just too indoctrinated to see it.

reply

"I don't like being preached at "

you hear this constantly from the "anti-woke" warriors .
The trouble is they will interpret anything as "being preached at"

Just the same as if the bad guy is white they will interpret that as a special message from hollywood saying "all whitwe men are evil"

what are your examples of modern so-called-woke movies that "preach" at you?

reply

You can deflect all you want but you, I and everyone knows the truth. Just like you leftists saying antifa doesn't exist and rioting, burning, looting, etc., were mostly peaceful protests. No one but leftists believes your lies.

reply

They are in denial and brainwashed. They can't afford to see outside of their own sphere. He didn't even read my post he just got all triggered.

reply

The people arguing against this point of view--I can't imagine how boring they must be in their real lives:

"What do you want to watch tonight?"

"Something that tells me bigotry is bad."

"Ooh, we haven't seen anything like that in...five minutes..."

"I'll get the environmentally-sustainable popcorn."

reply

Yeah it is boring. I have seen TV shows where the characters just make political speeches that have nothing to do with the story. They wear t shirts with slogans etc.

And yes I can see it too "Oh sorry honey we can't watch this film it lacks a diverse cast"

"Oh ok... can't have that! What about this one, it is set in Dark Ages England but has an Asian and black lead involved in a Gay interracial marriage?"

"That sounds amazing!"

You might also note by my comment that I am not into preached to at all. By anyone. Yet the SJW got triggered anyway! They just see what they want to see.

reply

Not that I have watched many old movies from the '40s.
But it was so bad that even the cartoons from the WWII era were full of propaganda.
Of course, I never saw most of them as a little girl.
After all, they had become obsolete long before I was born.
But there was a Goofy cartoon about saving resources for the war effort, that I watched several times.
And it seems to mostly be just another innocent Goofy cartoon among the others.
Except for that they casually talk about dropping bombs on Tokyo and Berlin!
Of course, I never got that when I watched it as a kid.
But I was genuinely shocked by it, when I re-watched it as a grown-up.

I can only imagine what the live-action movies for more mature audiences at the time were like.
But I'm pretty sure that many "woke" movies of today are subtle and benign by comparison.

reply

Woke isn't anymore subtle. I tried watching the first ep of the Charmed reboot and there was a scene where a couple are making out quite passionately. One of the main characters taps the girl on the shoulder and spews out a Metoo rant about how she can stop anytime she likes. I mean, really? The girl is obviously into what she is doing. The propaganda is just thrown in for the same reasons they threw in the propaganda in the 40's to brainwash and manipulate.

I don't care what the message is, what side of politics its on I just don't want it.

reply

Okay, but I must admit that I've never watched that show.
So I couldn't know.
That said, I guess I spoke too soon about the "woke" works of today being more subtle.
But that is because I think I manage to avoid the worst offenders.

reply

"But I'm pretty sure that many "woke" movies of today are subtle and benign by comparison."

Meh, hardly.

A big difference is that these movies were made during wartime and even then there were plenty of movies that were just focused on entertainment and without any propaganda.

Polly want a cracker?

reply

" People used to tolerate stuff like Billy Jack because, while it lectured about bigotry, it was, first and foremost, entertaining"

so what are your examples of movies that are not entertaining because too much lecturing?

reply

well , i dont look at thetre listings , or dedicate myself to seeing the latest films ,
so i'll just take a look at the "in theretres" thing on the fromnty page of mc

Eternals ? dunno
Dune - a sci fi thing
Red Notice - action film
James bond -
Shang chi - some asioan thing
Finch - sci fi about a robot i believe
Last night in Soho - oh no! women!
Ther French Dispatch ? dunno
ghostbuters afterlife
etc
etc

Which of these are Woke? they mostly have white males ion the cover
Which if these are "Lecturing" ?

how do you even work this out by "look at the movie listings for the only theater in my town"

reply

"Woke" movies have been around forever.

Wokeness is a relatively recent ideology/religion, 4-5 decades maximum (probably less), so woke movies can't have been there "forever".

reply

One could argue Twilight Zone was "woke." It's true this cult hasn't been called woke for that long, but "wokeness" is certainly an offspring of the ideology permeating college campuses since just after World War II. There were utopian science fiction novels in the 1800s that insisted on what the perfect society SHOULD be; and let's not forget, what "wokism" is today is nothing short of a collusion between far left extremism and Puritanical enforcement tactics.

reply

There is absolutely nothing wrong with BBQ. It is delicious. As a fan of BBQ, I want characters that enjoy BBQ featured in every TV show and movie always. ALWAYS. I want awards to be denied to movies that lack BBQ enthusiasts too.

reply

Collette Wolfe though!!

reply

Why do you think I watch older stuff. Inserting naked politics into film ruins everything and alienates either half or the whole audience. Bad writing/acting doesn't help either.

reply

The writing is particularly bad these days. That's what happens when Hollywood hires anyone who shows up with a pen and a claim they can write.

reply

That, and a lot of the older, talented writers have quit or walked out. I think we've had at least two or three writer's strikes since 2008 because of the crap going on in Hollyweird, particularly when there are different factions of people wanting things for a film or tv series, and nobody wants to make any compromises anymore. I mean, all you have left are talentless hacks that just happen to have friends higher up in the 'biz, because the talented writers got disgusted and are tired of being dictated to on how to tell their stories.
