Hey what do you think of my idea about plumbing and bathrooms.
I am moving towards buying land and buildings a new house, and
one thing I notice about kitchens and bathrooms - plumbing in
general is that in this day and age of water shortages, when I
want hot water I turn on the water and it has to heat the water,
go through metal pipes and heat them up, push a bunch of
perfectly good fresh water out of he pipes and finally, about a
minute later I get hot water. Then all that heat dissipate and it
is cold again for the next time.
I propose after noticing a small electric unit in a local store's
restroom that one pipe be run to every water "fixture" and
then split off to go to direct to the cold spigot, and then through
the electric heater. You can buy these heaters at a reasonable
price over the lifetime of the installation they will save a ton
or money in water and energy to heat it, as well as plumbing
installation and fixtures.
The shower, or tub is another story, but electric prices are
predicted to come down over time, and with a 240V circuit
you can heat enough water for a shower or bath. They are
expensive, but I think this would be a valid and efficient design.
its certainly a dilemna!
I used to see a lot of these heater units like you saw in the store's restroom in the 70's
Either in a similar location , or really small apartments where they wwere the only hot water.
Houses with "instant" hot water from modern "combi" boilers seem to have taken over.
But may suffer from the "run a lot of cold before saee any hot" problem.
My mum's does that because it wasnt installed in the best location in the house - which is something to consider when installing . I think thats why many are in or near the kitchen where hot water is used most often.
Instant electric showers are a great idea. I have one . solves a lot of these problems.
There are also "Boiling water" taps here in the uk for making tean and coffee , but in order for them to produce a resonable flow of incredibly hot water they have to maintain a reservoir of preheated water to work with . which is dubious for economy imho
The one I saw in the store's restroom was about 16" x 16" x 6" and produced a small amount of hot water enough to wash your hands, but that was enough. The cost of energy and water are going to continue to rise. The only good news is that solar electricity is falling. I think that energy used to heat the pipes, and the water that just goes down the drain is a huge amount of waste. I just hope that it is legal to plumb a bathroom or kitchen with just a cold water supply and not have a central main hot water reservoir, or a large on-demand unit that still has to waste water and energy.
If an electric shower can work, and that is my main uncertainty, that answers my question.

Nice choice, but during a HURRICANE when the POWER is out one still needs the OLD FASHIONED HURRICANE LAMP I have that uses KEROSENE.
The Last new thing I recall buying is another NEW TOOTHBRUSH.

?? As opposed to the OLD toothbrushes you normally buy?
shareOk ... so I bought some more TOOTHBRUSHES (which are always NEW ones whenever I buy them).
And since we also need NEW ones every 2 to 3 months, thanks for the reminder to buy some more of them pretty soon.
But since I also bought a 2 pack, it should also last another 2 to 3 months before needing another 2 pack again.
