Worst Accent You've Heard In A Movie?

If you've seen enough movies, you've probably heard your fair share of bad accents. British actors (Kate Winslet, Daniel Day-Lewis, Idris Elba) tend to do American accents much better than Americans do English/Irish/Scottish accents (Kevin Costner, Leonardo DiCaprio, Cameron Diaz).

The worst accent I've ever heard is Don Cheadle totally cocking up a Cockney accent in the Oceans series. Cheadle's normally a good actor, but his accent in these movies is atrocious. And it seems like even he agrees!

Any other examples of terrible accents?

Kevin Costner in Robin Hood. Great movie, lousy accent. He gave up even trying halfway through the film.

Brad Pitt - The Devil's Own

That was pretty rough, but I think DiCaprio's Irish accent in "Gangs of New York" was worse.

Steve Martin - Pink Panther

Mel Gibson in Braveheart
Richard Gere in The Jackal
Anthony Hopkins never ever try American accent, yet he played so many american characters.

Sean Connery also played a lot of American characters but never really bothered with an American accent...and yet somehow it always seemed to work for him.

My favorite Sean Connery accent is in "Highlander", where he played an immortal who was born in ancient Egypt and who's currently living as a Spanish nobleman. He plays the role with his native Scots accent, even when he visits Scotland! He sounds the same as everyone else!

I love that movie, because the hero is supposed to be Scots, but he's played by a French actor who has a thick French accent and who doesn't even try to sound Scottish.

So yeah, the movie stars a Spaniard with a Scots accent, and a Scot with a French accent! At that point, it's all so ridiculous it becomes fun.

It's because that voice and accent were just too pleasing to the ear. :)

reply

That's what I thought!

Pretty much any Liam Neeson movie..

reply

Does he even attempt one? I've always figured all his characters were supposed to be vaguely Irish.

reply

He does, he tries really hard, but his Irish tonality cannot be masked.

Mickey Rooney in Breakfast at Tiffany's (1961)

reply

I always assumed this one was intentionally ridiculous. It's practically a cartoon character.

reply

I know everybody says Kevin Costner in Robin Hood, but he didn't even make an attempt at an accent. But what the hell was Christian Slater trying to do? Sometimes he went posh and other times some sort of Cockney.

No one has mentioned the one that is always panned: Dick Van Dyke in Mary Poppins.
