What's Your Favorite Film Aimed Primarily At the Opposite Sex?

Examples of movies aimed primarily at men (Goodfellas, Unforgiven) or women (13 Going on 30, Sex & the City).

My favorite woman-centric movie is The Devil Wears Prada. Wasn't especially interested at first but it's become a favorite.

reply

Aren't films aimed at women (chick flick) and woman-centric not necessarily the same? For example, Erin Brockovich has a female lead, but I wouldn't call it a chick flick.

I liked The Devil Wears Prada, too. I'll mention Notting Hill (1999), I remember liking it.

reply

Yeah, it's probably up to the beholder. Like 9 to 5 (which I love) has a mostly female cast, but I don't think it was aimed primarily at women.

reply

I think mine would be The Bridges of Madison County (1995).

reply

👍 Yep.

The Ghost and Mrs Muir

Steel Magnolias

Is Phantom Thread a chick flick?

reply

BE HONEST...SAY HOW TO LOSE A GUY IN 10 DAYS.🙂

reply

No, but I'll confess to "Someone Like You".

reply

WITH ASHLEY JUDD?

reply

Yeah.

reply

I HAVE THAT...GOOD FLICK...COSTARRING THE MAN WHOS NAME MY DAUGHTER USED TO PRONOUNCE... HUGE ASSMAN.

reply

i wouldn't say so - i could see making a case for it, since it's a relationship drama & set in a designer's world, fashion and all that...

but i still see it as a classic pta film, with his slightly skewed sensibilities. at its heart, i think it's a movie that keeps the film fanboys happy. it's actually my favourite film of his, most days.

reply

It's a film about love and fashion but I question if it's a chick flick, but I have a hard time seeing how it could be for males or both sexes.

reply

Well, it is is about fashion, but I wouldn't classify it as a chick flick. It almost belongs to that Merchant-Ivory class of movies (leans female, but not entirely so).

Great movie though!

reply

hmmmph...

umbrellas of cherbourg, maybe? probably a bad answer, but i swear i can't think of anything else that would come close.

reply

WEIRDO🙄

NOW I GOTTA LOOK THAT "MOVIE" UP.

reply

it's really great!

(i think you'd have to be a bit of a monster not to love it at least a little).

and it's got catherine deneuve looking not the least bit unattractive, in case that's something you'd like to see.

reply

Umbrellas of cherbourg is fantastic.

reply

absolutely.

and just to be clear, when i said it's a bad answer, that's not because i don't think it's a great movie. i definitely do.

i don't think it's really a women's movie. even though it's a musical about a girl and her relationship ups and downs, it's really just a great, sweet crowd-pleasing film.

reply

That's not a chick flick IMO It's definitely a must-see.

reply

agreed, agreed - i knew it was a bad choice, cuz it's just a classic film. but it was the only thing i could find that came close to being in that sort of 'girl movie' zone.

reply

Maybe Grease, it's a bit 'girly' but a pretty fun movie

Good question...maybe I'll think of another🤔

reply

GREASE IS THE FUCKING WORD...ONLY MUSICAL I LIKE EVEN A LITTLE BIT...AND I LOVE IT!

reply

There is only one movie I wish was destroyed and never seen again and you just named it.

reply

PIG!🙄

reply

Sorry, but it gives me an incredible urge to get violent. It needs to be destroyed to protect everyone else.

reply

IM STARTING TO FEEL THAT WAY ABOUT YOU.🙂

reply

Can you guys just get a room🙄

reply

Get? We already have one.

reply

I hope it's a paddaed room!

KOWALSKI is a bit 'touched in the melon'

reply

IM GONNA TOUCH YOUR MELONS NEXT.🙂

grease is just great fun. i'm making that my answer now, too. scratch out the response i gave above.

great bubblegum pop songs.
young travolta at his most charismatic (some will make the case for snf, and fair play to them, but c'mon...)
and olivia newton john at not quite her most freakishly hot, but still pretty damned hot.

great.

reply

Agreed 💯%

Going out on a limb here but I enjoyed West Side Story as well...Those are the only two musicals I care for as far as I can recall...

reply

OH YEAH...I SAW THAT ONE IN HIGH SCHOOL...NATALIE WOOD...THAT ONE IS OK TOO...AND IF IM BEING COMPLETELY HONEST I KINDA LIKE THE AIDS MUSICAL TOO.

reply

Rent? I only remember Rosario Dawson from that mess🥰

reply

AFTER YOU HAVE SEEN ROSARIO SHAKE IT OUT ON THE ROOF IN CLERKS 2 AND STRUT HER STUFF IN TRANCE...YOU FORGET ABOUT ALL THE OTHER MOVIES.

reply

i'm not into musicals as a rule, but there are a few i really like.

singin' in the rain is pretty much a perfect movie to me. i watch it every new year's day, cuz it seems like the perfect feel good film to start the year off.

i really like the belle and sebastian musical 'god help the girl.' it's really loose and shambolic and (if you know b&s's music at all, this is no surprise) completely twee, but it's a great time & filled with terrific songs.

i'm not crazy about la la land, but i really like damien chazelle's earlier musical 'guy and madeline on a park bench.' it's crude, almost amateurish compared to la la land, but very fun and energetic.

so yeah...i guess i'm a wimp!

reply

THE WIMPIER YOU ARE THE EASIER IT WILL BE TO PUSH YOU DOWN AND GRRRR😈

reply

hahaha, holy cow....there's a lot of room for interpretation in that 'grrrr!'

reply

I recall you mentioning 'Singing in The Rain' before

Nah, nothing wimpy about liking musicals bud...I'm not a big fan but a few are real toe-tappers

reply

I was never a musicals guy (well, aside from Sound of Music), but my wife introduced me to Singing in the Rain and now I understand why it's such a classic. Donald O'Connor's song & dance number for "Make 'Em Laugh" is still amazing. How many times did he have to rehearse that one!
