Why was the OJ Simpson trial so HUGE back in mid 90s?

It seemed back then you couldn't escape without hearing about it. Why was it so popular? Did Americans have nothing better to do with their time?

reply

Just as an aside, I remember that where I was working back then about 80% of the staff were white, 20% were black. Every white person there thought he did it. Every black person thought he didn't.

reply

The whites I knew only started believing when the DNA evidence started pouring in . O J was so popular then, even with.non football fans, that it was difficult to wrap our heads around. Why would he ruin his life by doing something so horrific.??
So the soap opera began..the back story.his obsession with Nicole..etc.
It really had nothing to do with race but the lawyers knew how to get a slam dunk.

reply

I don't know if it had any bearing, but I was in a police environment. I wasn't a police officer, but I was fairly recently out of the forces and was doing some training for them.

reply

Yep.

😎

reply

Because we were all so excited to learn that the word "hysterical' is derived from the Greek word for "pussy" and we all wondered what else we didn't know...

reply

This pretty much sums it up.

What event started the 24-hour news cycle?

The O.J. Simpson murder case in 1994 and 1995 created the 24-hour news cycle and ushered in the era of cable news.

OJ was a very popular celebrity and the first black man who really crossed over into white society.

The 24 hour news cycle began a long time (14 YEARS) before OJ ever took a ride down the freeway in that SUV.

June 1, 1980

On June 1, 1980, CNN (Cable News Network), the world’s first 24-hour television news network, makes its debut. The network signed on from its headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia, with a lead story about the attempted assassination of civil rights leader Vernon Jordan.

the bronco chase drew people into this case.

reply

True - I was glued to the TV the day that happened.

reply

I always thought if there was no Bronco chase this case would not have been such a big deal. We will never know.

reply

I didn't watch the chase live, but I think that as a celebrity, OJ's trial still would have garnered a lot of attention due to the serious charges against him. Even without the live chase.

reply

Me too. That was a "trip."

The day Magic came out as HIV Positive was a big moment in sports history. Me and a buddy were at a sports bar and some local camera crew aimed their instruments at us and asked What We Thought. We were both from Michigan and were very familiar with Magic but it was so uncomfortable, all I could do was chuckle.
The cameraman turned away like we were Radioactive Roadkill, haha.

In-the-moment takes aren't all they are cracked up to be, right?

reply

So true.
Over here in Europe, the bronco chase made him a known name - not his sports or movie career before.

reply

Same here in the USA.

Because Before the chase down the freeway in the SUV one mostly knew who he was from the HERTZ COMMERCIALS that he did on TV (because one also didn't watch or pay any attention to his movie roles or to the American football games where he also got some fame).

reply

O.J. represented so much about the American Dream.

Sporting star. Blonde wife. Hollywood career.

But dreams sour. Divorce. Murder. Police chases on live TV.

Then it turned out that the LAPD had some bad apples and it became a trial of interest for the black community.

There was fear that of he was found guilty, the blacks would loot, burn and kill as they did with the Rodney King verdict.

So many elements.

Was Ron Goldman really going to Nicole's to "drop off glasses"? That seems suspicious to me. He could've waited until the next day and not deliver them around 10pm that night. That's too late.

He probably was going to bone her. I mean, Nicole's skimpy black dress she wore when she died, the bathtub filled with water, candles lit. It doesn't take a genius to figure out what was going to happen. He probably was going to bone her.

Am I right?

I just saw that yesterday night and it inspired me to comment on this thread.

reply

We're on the same wavelength then. That clip gives you a pretty good idea of what he was about. My theory is, that he was hoping to maybe get lucky that night. All of the evidence I remember being reported back then was that, he was there by chance and then, collateral damage.

reply

they were both single.

reply

Since Ron worked at the restaurant where NICOLE had eaten a meal with her mother (who left her eyeglasses there), it makes sense that he wouldn't have gotten off work until about 10pm (which would also be about the time when such a place would close for the night).

And people also take a bath with some scented candles all of the time as a way to relax before heading off to bed to GO TO SLEEP (even when they don't have sex or getting laid on their mind).

And why run a tub of water before a guest arrives ( which would also have become a tub full of cold water by the time they got there)??? Doing that makes no sense either.

So unless there's proof that they were already having an affair, then there's also no way to really know what may or may not have happened between her and Ron that night.

And even IF they were seeing one another, like hownos says, they were both SINGLE and that still also doesn't give OJ the right to MURDER THEM (especially when he was also seeing other women and he was also DIVORCED from her).

Most likely OJ used Ron as an excuse to murder her so that he also didn't need to keep paying her $10,000 per month for child support. And by killing Ron, he could also try to paint her as being a woman with lose morals who didn't deserve to have custody of the kids. And for all we know he may also be the one who filled up that tub with the water and placed the candles there.

reply

There's a lot of speculation that it may have been a drug hit since Ron's friends at the Mezzaluna restaurant where he worked were murdered in a similar fashion.

It would be pretty impressive for OJ to slaughter them both especially when Ron was a fit, karate-trained young man. Whereas, OJ was in his late 40s and had arthritis and had football injuries. And all he got was a small cut on his finger. Ron had major self-defense wounds on his hands. OJ had no visible bruising on his face.

"Most likely OJ used Ron as an excuse to murder her so that he also didn't need to keep paying her $10,000 per month for child support. And by killing Ron, he could also try to paint her as being a woman with lose morals who didn't deserve to have custody of the kids."

He was probably in a serious rage that day especially after being dumped by his girlfriend and also being rebuffed from the Brown family earlier. So, OJ wasn't in the right frame of mind and likely wasn't thinking rationally especially seeing Ron and Nicole together.

reply

It's HIGHLY UNLIKELY a DRUG HIT would have the BLOOD STAINS of OJ all over the place (which they also found in ABUNDANCE at the MURDER SCENE -- due to the injury that he had to his hand -- from killing his victims with the knife he used that had also injured his hand).

Then they also found his BLOODY SOCKS in his bedroom. And he also tried to FLEA the COUNTRY.

So my guess is that was also because he was GUILTY (which they also said was the case when he was SUED in CIVIL COURT).

Having KARATE SKILLS also does no good if someone has a GUN and SHOOTS you before you can KICK or KNOCK it out of their hand. And OJ having that HUGE SIZED KNIFE would also do no good either if he hides in the BUSHES with it and then attacks RON with it before he could defend himself. The ELEMENT of surprise was most likely what enables OJ to kill them. PLUS OJ was also has a much larger body size, and more bone and muscle mass than RON had.

And yes his EMOTIONAL state of mind most likely also played a role in the murders as well (due to the kind of jealousy he had and adrenalin that he had running through his body at that time).

People have also been able to LIFT AUTOMOBILES off of other people (something they wouldn't normally have been able to do) when they had a RUSH of adrenalin running through their bodies. So that would also have been an ADVANTAGE for OJ when it came to being able to OVER POWER Ron.

reply

One, because he was a celebrity. Two, because even back then people loved to politicize tragic events. It's the first time I realized the US is obsessed with race. By the way, the judge was a complete nutter.

Also, only the usual racists claim there wasn't enough evidence to find him guilty beyond a reasonable doubt...🙄

reply

A phrase that I remember often being used in the reporting of the trial was, "...a mountain of evidence..."

reply

"108 exhibits of DNA evidence, including 61 drops of blood"

Of course, this was all contaminated or planted...even though there was no proof of that whatsoever...

reply

Like the myth of the planted gloves. They were his. OJ had arthritis. He had stopped using his medication for several weeks prior to that infamous scene of him trying them on, which got him acquitted. His joints were swollen, so naturally, the gloves didn't fit.

reply

Also, the gloves had dried blood on them, and if you let blood dry on fabric or leather then the fabric or leather becomes stiff and dry, if the gloves were really soaked then they'd be as hard as rocks by that point.

So yes, the "...gloves don't fit, you must acquit" thing was a brilliant but totally misleading bit of courtroom theater.

reply

From what I remember, Christopher Darden was, for a time, perceived as having botched the prosecution's case when that backfired on him so miserably.

reply

Remember when OJ was considered a "nice guy"? He was considered the role of the "Terminator" but producers turned him down because of his "nice guy" image.

reply

Well he wasn't nice, he was beating the shit out of his wife and fucking around LA, while the whole world thought he was a nice, wholesome, mainstream-OK man.

And that's why celebrities pay the big bucks for publicists, to create an image that's useful to their careers rather than truthful.

reply

When asked by a reporter if he would continue to work for "Hertz," OJ responded, "I don't know. I have to go home and axe my wife." 😲

reply

Lol!

What were Ron and Nicole's last words to OJ? "It Hertz!".
