Do people when drunk actually really show their true self?

There is a lot of discussion about this. But if a person becomes pretty evil when drunk, does that mean that person is actually that evil? And that they're good at hiding it when sober? Or is there another alternative take on this?

reply

I don't know is turning into a sex crazed wolf evil?

reply

Look - I'm having some drinks, I'm trying to relax so F YOU !!

Just kidding. Fortunately, while occasionally my passions may get aroused and I'll be a little more forthright, when I'm drinking - which is often - I think my true self isn't such a bad person that it reveals a flaw in my character. Other than having to drink for entertainment and relaxation. I've had people say I'm rather jovial after I've had a couple.

reply

i think when you're drunk you just have the courage to say whatever you're thinking or feeling at the time whether you really gave it much thought or not.

reply

Nice.

reply

Imbibing too much often erases one's inhibitions
So no, I just think some otherwise nice people simply get crass or angry when wasted

Some folks should just drink at home

reply

What is someone's "true self"?

Maybe I'm wrong but I think most people are multifaceted and not simply one true personality that remains hidden from others from time to time (or all the time, depending on the person).

reply

There is no "true self," there is only void.

reply

hmmm. I think there is true self..You just don't like it?

reply

Probably there is. But how does one know which truth is really true?

reply

Its the same person you are now. If you have too much too drink you become a louder version of yourself.

reply

Yeah, but is it really my "true self?"

reply

I don't know what is your true self..Tell me 3 things that define you?

reply

Idk, I think there is no such thing as a "true self." You're the one saying there is.

reply

I always enjoy a movie were there's a party or Drinking Scene. Those characters become more entertaining, friendly, silly but I learned early on if someone in reality gets rowdy or hostile at the party they probably won't be invited back cause that's just who they are.

reply

If an evil person is good at hiding his evilness, isn't that also his true self? His true self would be "a person that is good at hiding evil toughts except when drunk."

If his true self was "a person that is good at hiding evil thought even when drunk," then you'll never know that he's got evil thoughts.

reply

are you afraid of what you might do?

reply

No. Why would you assume that?

reply

just the serious thing you were talking about.

reply

Oh, it's not serious. Just a little philosophical.

I've been drunk many times, and when I'm drunk I feel everything is funnier x100. I once tried to dunk sliced bread into coffee thinking that we eat sliced bread alongside coffee anyway, so why not just dunk it in like Oreo. That would be more practical! Turned out it tasted terrible. Which is stupid when sober, but hella funny when drunk.

So I don't think getting drunk is making our "true self" appears. Whatever that means.

the person is still evil , even if they are capable of hiding it when sober
admitedly thats better than a person who cant hide their evil when sober

reply

It's not the matter of who is more evil, but if drunkenness actually shows "true self."

My argument was that even if when the state of being drunk may reveal something seemingly not seen in sobriety, that reveal is still just a part of what we percieve. Which may or may not be the "true self."

reply

I'm afraid you've lost me
you said "If an evil person is good at hiding his evilness, isn't that also his true self?"

establishing , in this example , the person is in fact evil
if being drunk prevents the person from masking that , then his true self is evil.

when sober his true self is evil , but good at masking it
when drunk his true self is evil

ergo , he is evil wether drunk or sober
evil is at least one aspect of his "true self" maybe another is he likes kittens who knows

reply

Ah, that's because I was challenging the OP's meaning of true self.

The OP was alluding that the personality revealed by drunkenness is the true self. In this case, a seemingly good person when sober, but actually evil when drunk means his true self is an evil person.

While my take is that a seemingly good person when sober but actually evil when drunk means his true self is a seemingly good person when sober but actually evil when drunk.

But if an evil person that is seemingly good when sober and still seemingly good when drunk then we will never know if he's actually evil by only observing his personality when he's drunk.

Therefore, drunkennes is not actually showing one's true self.

reply

I see what you mean,
although i reckon drunk state does give us moreof an insight than not drunk.
on the other hand lots of people say
"Its the demon drink got into me" , like it totally made them into someone else

Other forms of intoxication make you act differently i guess , so who's to say that isnt the true self.
like mdma , or nos

In vino veritas.
