πŸš— Anyone here have an EV?

I'd like to own an electric vehicle, but they're way beyond my budget. I like the idea of not having to buy gas/petrol. I've read some reviews where folks say they're fun to drive.

Anyone have plans or hopes to buy one?

reply

Not anytime soon. EV tech, specifically the battery and charging technologies are still in their infancy. I won't be happy if I bought an expensive 250mil range EV with 2-hour fast charging only to find that a year or two from now cheaper EVs would have 500mil and 30-minutes charging time.

These things improve so fast. I'll wait for those to settle down for awhile first.

reply

I get it. And there's the question of having enough charging stations. Practicality is a ways off, I suspect, especially in rural areas.

SAME BOAT AS YOU...LIKE TO HAVE ONE,CANT AFFORD THE DAMN THING...CURRENTLY DRIVING A GAS GUZZLING,FRONT END NEEDS REPLACING 15 YEAR OLD MERCURY GRAND MARQUIS...HOPEFULLY WE WILL BE GETTING A PICKUP TO REPLACE IT SOON.

reply

I shouldn't complain. My 19-year-old Saturn is not a gas hog and it's in pretty good shape. Some days I can't believe I still have it. I'll probably end up driving it until it's no longer safe for me to drive. It has only 161,000 miles on it - yeah, I don't drive much - averaging about 8500 miles a year. But still, there are days when I'd like to have a newer car.

Nope. Still driving the Silver Bullet, my 2008 Impala!

Thanks!

Do they still make an Impala anymore?
A lot of iconic names have been retired, a bit to my dismay.

btw, I drive 1994 Chevy Blazer, 27 freeking years old.
And I'm freeking about when I should replace the old bitch. I'm not made of money, y'know.
But lately it's been running great, (knock on wood).

Nope, bought a 2017 Camaro 50th anniversary edition in 2019 and I love it

Lucky you! Looks awesome!

The next vehicle I’m buying is the Tesla Cybertruck once they are readily available. I don’t really care for the looks but it is stainless steel and I’ll never have to worry about waxing again.

reply

My stainless steel kitchen appliances are fingerprint magnet tho'. And they're a chore to clean.

reply

I don’t care if it looks shiny I just don’t want to deal with clear coat paint damage which I currently have a problem with. I just don’t want to have to worry about protecting the paint. Also I think the metal in the body is fairly thick so it won’t get banged up in the parking lot.

reply

I'd urge you to look into your theories about the body of the car before purchase.
The phrase "too good to be true" comes to mind.

reply

I noticed that too. I found a way to clean them and it stays clean for a decent amount of time though. Screw that stainless steel cleaner - wipe down the surface with a vinegar/water mixture (I used 50/50) and then spray a little vegetable oil cooking spray on a paper towel and wipe over the surface. Besides the fingerprints, my dishwasher and oven used to get all weird and splotchy (from the heat I assume) and I did this a couple of months ago and haven't had to redo it yet.

reply

I'll try that. Thank you!

Edit: about the use of vegetable oil tho'... won't it make the appliances smell after a few days?

reply

Not that I’ve noticed. Just a light spray on a cloth or paper towels and wipe evenly over the surface.

reply

As you know, I'm a massive petrol head and the technology has a way to go yet for me.

reply

I get it. You're not alone in your thinking.

reply

Vroom 🏎

reply

No plans to buy one so far. I have a 4x4 that I need for off road use and two 3500 series dually trucks that I use to pull heavy trailers. The 3500’s run on diesel.

reply

True. EVs aren't right for every job.

reply

Honestly, one of the biggest draws for me is, no oil changes, no air filters, next to near no maintenance! Gotta keep an eye on the tires and the windshield wipers still, I guess.

reply

I know! Much less maintenance is a big plus.
