Does popcorn seem worse to you the older you get?

Back in the day, I would happily scoff cinema popcorn with no problems, except that maybe it was rather salty, and it always seemed crisp to me.

But now, at age 48, popcorn in all its forms seems crunchy, too crunchy to me, especially with the hard bits inside: this applies to cinema popcorn, the pre-popped stuff in bags, microwave popcorn with all of the icky additions, and popping corn you pop yourself with oil in a saucepan! It's all too crunchy and not really worth it.

Is it just me, or my age? Or are other older people finding this out and going off the stuff? I can't seem to find any such articles about it online.

I think many of us are used to eating crappy microwave popcorn for the convenience. Compared to making popcorn in a pot with oil and butter, microwave popcorn leaves alot to be desired.

reply

I only occasionally eat microwave popcorn and a couple of brands are decent, so it's not something I think too much about.

I'm lazy and there isn't any cleanup with microwave popcorn.

I would love to make popcorn in a pot but I have a glass top stove and don't want to scratch the surface. My wife and I are getting a gas stove in the near future. I agree the clean up is a pain.

reply

You mean an induction cooktop? Why don't you just put a cloth under the pot?

reply

You can't use a pot on a glass top stove? I do it all the time and I don't see any scratches. I have a glasstop electric stove, but maybe we are talking about different types of stoves. I'm no Ovenologist, so I don't know much about em.

reply

So if you don't put pots on your stove top, what do you put on it?

reply

An induction stovetop as TrentnQuarantino refers to or a glass top stove. Don't want to scratch the glass that covers the stove burners by shaking the pot in which the popcorn and oil contains.

How about Jiffy Pop? They still sell it.

Haven't tried that in a long time - maybe I'll get some.

I think it's age thing. Everything feels worse because nostalgia seems to be always better.

The same as movies or tv shows. I thought The Simpsons was the best most funniest most entertaining tv show ever, and many many other people think so too because it's one of the most succesful tv series of all time.

However, when I rewatched some episodes thinking that I was gonna have a really good time. Turned out, not so much. The show barely made me smile, let alone making me laughing out loud like when I was younger.

If you can go back in time to eat the original popcorn you so enjoyed back then it would probably taste on par with the popcorn you have now. It's just everything good that happened a long time ago always feels way better in hindsight.

This is spot on.

Damn nostalgia!

I still like it.

That said I never have it at home so it’s only ever movie popcorn for me. Now that I don’t go to the movies much (especially since COVID) popcorn is like a treat. I don’t risk the unpopped hard bits though. If I get one of those I just swallow it whole.

I just ate some and it was delicious. I'm 61 years old. It was Redenbacher's popped in my Salbree popper

Orville is the only one I really like. I love popcorn except for the dental cleanup afterwards. 😁

I make mine in one of these:

And hey, you're getting fiber into your diet, too!

The glass thing on top makes it look like the world's biggest home coffee percolator

That is so retro

reply

🤭 It is very retro. I bought it about five years ago from a guy in NYC who collects, refurbishes, and sells vintage small appliances. I bought a 1960s toaster from him, too.

reply

No. Still love it.

reply

I barely eat it but it’s delicious. I’m 38.
