What did you watch this week my peeps? (01/31-02/06)

Here we go again!

Rate these if you saw them:

Zero Charisma (2013 Tubi): Was suggested to me after watching Spaghettiman. I’m pretty glad I did. I wasn’t too sure about the main character but I ended up being fascinated by him and what was happening to him. The scene where he invites a friend to sleep over cracked me up real good. I had to pause to recover. I’m going to take a wild shot and say that if you enjoyed the show My name is Earl you’re gonna like this movie. I’m going to go as far as to say this movie could make a good TV show. I never played D&D or fantasy card games but somehow I relate to these types of movies. And these characters felt real to me. My rating: 7.5/10

12 strong (2018 TV): Cool cast, good quality of production, a tad long but I can’t blame them for trying to go for epic. Eck, at some point they were on some lord of the rings s**t with their horses riding in the mountains, grand music in the background. It’s also the kind of movie where the enemy will shoot 1000 bullets on the good guys but barely even kill one of them while they kill entire army with a few bullets. I’m exaggerating but you know what I mean. The helicoper views were very cool and thewar action was solid. I woul rename this movie Horses & Tanks. My rating: 7/10

In too deep (1999 DVD): If I made a top 100 favourite actors list, Omar Epps would be for there for sure. He would maybe even be in my top 50, idk. If I made a top 10 favourite movie sub-genre; Afro-American gangster (thugs) movies would definitely be in there. It would maybe even be in my top five. This movie is everything that I loved and everything that I still like. My only complaint about this movie is that everywhere the undercover cop goes people ask him are you a cop. Also, everybody is looking for the mysterious drug lord called God while he himself is running the streets constantly yelling “Im God birches, remember me!” Plus we don’t see Sticky Fingaz AKA Onyx long enough. Overall it’s a very solid piece of work that showcases the struggle of an undercover cop in the streets of Cincinnati very well. My rating: 7.5/10

Escape room (2019 Netflix): Ok, let me rent about the dialogue first. There is a sentence that many reviewers use that I hate but I’m going to use it now for the first time: it seems this was written by a bunch of energy drink fueled 13 yrs old. The first 30 minutes was especially cringe. All the (poorly written) characters retorts were as cheesy as possible. That being said, some of the tricks were fun, the set designs were awesome and the tension became palpable at some point. The second half was definitely better than the first. That « system override » in the final scene was so ridiculous it was funny. 5/10

The wife and I watched the first French Netflix Original series: Lupin (2021). It’s not crazy or mind-blowing but it is entertaining. Overall: 7/10

I started the final season of The big bang theory and I watched some amazing hockey from the Montreal Canadiens!

This week I rewatched Who am I(my fav movie) and I decided to change my mark from 9/10 to 8/10 as it is so boring to see this film for 7th time xd

Wait wait wait, like your favourite movie of all time of your « actual favourite thing to watch rn »????

I love Jackie Chan too!

In Too Deep 7/10
Escape Room 6.5/10

For me

Bonding Season 2 7.5/10 Not as funny as the first season. I was reading that the writer (the show is based on his experiences) had feedback from the BDSM community about the first season, so the second season is geared more to consent. I still really enjoyed it and would recommend both seasons.

Dark Waters (2019) 7/10 Not the type of movie I usually watch (hubby picked it) but it was well done. I do remember seeing parts of the story in the news over the years. I guess I just don't care for these movies as much because I get so sad and angry about what companies are allowed to get away with and there's nothing we can really do about it. Over all though the movie was good, and it didn't seem like it sensationalized anything too much.

Europa Report (2013) 6.75/10 I swear I'd seen this movie before but I couldn't remember anything. It was much better than I thought I remembered. lol. Great international cast, I think they were the best part. Story is minimal, but it works. Tension kept up throughout most of the movie. I liked it.

The Wilds finished the first season 7/10 - A little torn on this one. I really liked the dynamics of the girls on the island, and even when they are in the facility telling their stories (not a spoiler happens right away). I didn't find it as "woke" as some of the other commenters, but feminism does play a role, but it will be interesting to see where season 2 takes us.

Good stuff! Thanks for drop by! 😊

good day.

zero charisma kinda bummed me out - it almost felt too real to me in some ways. but i liked it a lot. 3.5
escape room - i thought it was a fairly ok modern horror. most of the big set-pieces were pretty fun. 3/5

my week:

genesis (2018) 3 very nice movie. kids confront obstacles, sort out their feelings, make mistakes, some small, some major. it's shambolic and aimless, but in the good way that true to life movies can be. it would be absolutely winning & great if it wasn't so pointlessly long and padded with several needlessly long musical interludes and drawn out moments that push this over the 2 hr mark.

there's simply no need for it to be that long.

beeswax (2009) 4 fun, loose-limbed nothing movie. major plot point is a cash register ribbon getting stuck. those are the kind of low-key stakes i like in a story.

i really like movies where nothing happens. maybe i should spend more time on youtube watching someone's home movies and less time on paid streaming services.

these sisters should be indie film sex symbols. why aren't they in more movies?

funny ha ha (2002) 3.5 i want more of this aimless fucking around in all my movies.

robocop (1987) 5 why can't we have gleefully brutal, funny popular films like this now?

berserker (1987) 2.5 pretty dull late 80s slasher. the cutest girl gets naked, but she also gets knocked off 1/2 way into the film, so your ogling time is limited.

i guess it's a little distinctive in that even its death scenes try for an almost art house horror style. those scenes aren't very exciting, but at least they're a bit different. the rest of the film is just a bit too dull and plodding to recommend, unless you're an obsessive that's seen all the other 80s slashers.

cub (2014) 3 there's some fun stuff in here. it plays around with a few tropes, but as a whole, the film never really takes flight. it's never less than watchable, and it's got some surprises, but it just never quite pops the way i hoped it would. worth a look for fans of the genre, anyway.

the beyond (1981) 4 3rd or 4th watch, i believe, and i still can't really sort out what's happening in this movie.

but the makeup and effects are some of my favourites in any movie.

apollo 11 (2019) 5 watching this probably gets me as close as i can get to experiencing what a religious person might feel, maybe.

all the light in the sky (2012) 3.5 jane adams should be in more things.
i resent sophia takal for that stupid black christmas movie, but i always like her as an actress.

monster hunter (1981) 3 mixed bag, but leaning towards the good. fun gore, fun kills, not a lot of sense-making to be found. it does get a little bogged down at times, flirts with being flat out boring in a few spots. but it's still worth a look if things like this are your thing.

the score sounds like it was recycled from some of the composers other movies.

punishment park (1971) 4 an interesting byproduct of its era, and lots of people will find commonalities with events of the last year, i suppose.

my own reactionary take is that those filthy hippies deserve all the bad things.

ok, good (2012) 3.5 i think almost everyone can kinda understand the last 15 minutes of this movie. we've all been there.

robocop 3 (1993) 2 i didn't expect this to be great or even close to good. but i am disappointed that it's so soft & pg. the satirical brutality of the original film is a distant, vague memory & absolutely nowhere to be seen.

biggest highlight? seeing jill hennessy looking very fine.

conan the barbarian (1982) 3.5 a bit too long and i'd argue a bit too light on action and tension in its middle section, but it has some great sets, some truly great set-pieces, and i think that ending scene, with the temple at night and hundreds of torches lighting up the dark captures the epic feel the rest of the film lacked. it disappoints me a bit every time i watch it, because i feel like there's a better film just under the surface waiting to burst out, but it's still pretty good, miles better than almost any other sword & sorcery film you could name i bet.

extra ordinary (2019) 3.5 maybe i was a little too primed by the generally great reviews, but i am just the slightest bit underwhelmed. not to say that this is anywhere close to bad. perish the thought. it's 100% nice. very cute & amiable. but it's never really funny, at least not to me, and i never quite got sucked into it.

i think if it was just a little more winning & funny, it would be a low-key masterpiece like hunt for the wilderpeople, instead of just being really nice and fine.

avengers age of ultron (2015) 4 absolutely the weakest of the four avengers films. fair enough. i'm not gonna argue with anyone on that.

but it's still lots of fun, full of great moments that make suspended adolescents like me happy. vision comes to life in particular.

the big action stuff at the end definitely isn't a patch on the climaxes of the other ones, but that chase & the iron man/hulk fight in the middle is great stuff.

flawed but underappreciated.

invaders from mars (1986) 2.5 i had pretty good memories of enjoying this back in my high school/vhs days, but while it's certainly got some fun moments & plenty of redeeming qualities, i have to say i'm a bit disappointed that it didn't maintain the goofy joy of its first half hour or so.

fun creatures and effects, but after that opening, it kinda flattens out into something that was still ok but a lot less fun.

nimic (2019) 3.5 neat little yorgos lanthimos short. will be appreciated by those who were worried we might never get lobster/dogtooth/sacred deer lanthimos back after his big success with the favourite.

trash humpers (2009) 4 lol x 4 billion. i like this a lot more than 95% of the films on the sight and sound 250.

bpm (2017) 4 i knew absolutely nothing about this movie going in other than it got a lot of positive buzz the year it was released, and this is definitely one of those times where i was gratified and ultimately rewarded by that ignorance, i think.

no surprise to learn that the writers had personal experience with this. it has the feel of coming from people who were there. the meeting scenes in particular are great and completely engrossing. if i'd had a movie of nothing but those moments, i would have given it 5 stars.

i think it falters by being a good bit too long and a little too unfocused for me. a stripped down, less shambolic movie would have been much more impactful imo. still terrific, regardless.

wall-e (2008) 5 my first watch. came out at a time when i wasn't really going to theatres.

you don't need me to write anything about a movie all the world has seen.

captain america winter soldier (2014) 4.5 i've always thought this was one of the best mcu films, but i think i might have undervalued it even so.

might have the best, most exciting action of any of those films.

outer space (1999) 5 this is really something. i don't know what this is or who made it, but i really loved it.

if you don't have a good sound setup at home, i really recommend watching this with a good set of headphones. it adds a lot.

there's a stream of it on youtube. it's only 10 minutes long. if you're in the mood, smoke something, put on your headphones and zone out to it.

dream work (2001) 5 i don't know what this is, but i know i like it.

back when i used to read about industrial bands, this is what i'd imagine they'd sound like. i was always a little disappointed when i heard spk or tg or the cabs, because it was never quite ugly & brutal enough.

this is what i wanted that to be like. the fact that there are cool visuals to go with it makes it all the more satisfying.

final destination 5 (20110 3 the final destination films are all quite good actually!

none of them are great, but they all are fun and pacey & perfectly watchable, and this one is no exception.

Robocop: 9/10
Robocop 3: 6.5/10
Age of lutrin: 7.5/10
Wall-e: 8.5/10
Winter soldier: 7/10

Yeah, The final destination series can be fun sometimes

it's streaming on mubi, but if you're in north america you'll need a vpn to watch it. it's available in there in most of europe - finland, sweden, denmark, netherlands, etc...

mubi has a 7 free trial, so if you wanted to you could sign up, watch it, then cancel.

(i think mubi's really great, though - it's probably my favourite streaming service. i don't work for them. i just really like their content).

The Beyond (1981) is a film that to me is the perfect representation of a dreadful nightmare. I don’t know if Fulci intended for the viewer to suspend logic while watching, but if you can, it’s definitely a wild experience. What do you think of the ending? When I think of the film, those ending images always stand out to me.

reply

i love that final shot. honestly, if it didn't end so perfectly, i probably wouldn't like it half as much. i certainly couldn't tell you what the heck was going on in that film, but it's got great moments and sticks the ending perfectly.

I just watched Sightseers, (2012) directed by Ben Wheatly, who also directed A Field in England, which I reviewed earlier. It's a dark, gruesome, blithely amoral, but funny and entertaining film.

Chris and Tina take off in Chris's "caravan" (trailer) for an "erotic odyssey" of the sights and museums of Yorkshire, England. He's the type of person who just can't let anything go, so it's best not to cross him. He wants to show her his world, but events conspire against them, and their dream caravan holiday takes a wrong turn.

I really enjoyed it, and give it a 7.5/10. I would show you the trailer, but it gives away too much of the film.

😎

reply

Ok ok, this one looks good too!!

reply

It is, though as I said, it is a bit gruesome at times.

😎

reply

tbh, sightseers is where i kinda started to fall off the wheatley train. not to say i think it's bad, or even close to bad. it's fine. i enjoyed the dark comedy of it. but after kill list, it seemed like such a...i dunno, it just didn't surprise me. it all felt a bit too broad and on the nose, if that makes any sense.

reply

Wheatley is not for everyone.

I just watched Where The Buffalo Roam. Bill Murray was funny as usual, but couldn't save this cinematic turd from
sinking like a rock. I kept looking at the clock wondering when it was going to end. 5/10. I only watched it because I had recently seen Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, which was a much better film about Hunter S Thompson.

😎

reply

Where the buffalo roam : Fear and loathing in Las Vegas is one of my all-time favourite and a 10/10 for me so I really enjoyed this one too although obviously not as much. 7.5/10

reply

Fear and Loathing is obviously the better film, and I only watched Buffalo to make a comparison. Bill Murray was kind of funny, but Peter Boyle was awful. He was chewing the scenery as if he were starving.
😎

reply

Hunter S Thompson reportedly said that, if he ever saw Bill Murray, he was going to kill him for Where The Buffalo Roam. That film truly stank buffalo turds.

reply

Yes it did, but I don't think it was all his fault. The script was very poor, and Peter Boyle chewed the scenery
like he was starving.

😎

Whoa...

12 Strong: 6/10
Escape Room: 7/10

Three Colors: White (1994) - It was good. There were some parts that were a little boring and others that were much better. (7/10)

Broadway Danny Rose (1984) - It was good and funny. Dropped off a little at the end. (8/10)

Paris, Texas (1984) - This was way better than I expected. Also very emotional. (8/10)

Three Colors: Red (1994) - I thought this was the best of the trilogy. Everything came together in a cool way. (8/10)

Yedinci Kogustaki Mucize (2019) - Really good and a great story. It hit all the right emotional notes and the way the last 20-30 minutes played out was excellent. (8/10)

Gosford Park (2001) - This is a popular movie for some reason, but geez, this was a real drag. Barely anything happened for the first half of the movie. Then when stuff did happen it wasn't interesting. I was really annoyed almost the entire time I was watching it. (5/10)

Fanny and Alexander (1982) - I wish I could have liked this, but I just didn't think it was very interesting. The last 40 minutes or so were pretty good, but other than that it didn't do anything for me. (6/10)

Fear of Rain (2021) - Unfortunately, it wasn't very good, but not awful. I thought a lot of what happened wasn't logical. (6/10)

Greenland (2020) 7/10
An ok disaster movie starring Gerard Butler.

The Wicked Lady (1983) 5/10
Watching just to see Troi from Star Trek getting into a fight with Faye Dunaway and losing all her clothes! 😂

The Wicked Lady (1945) 7/10
Far better than the remake with a great cast too!

The Last Emperor (1987) 8.5/10
Stunning movie, not dated at all.

The Homesman (2014) 7.5/10
Decent performances by Tommy Lee Jones and Hilary Swank in a western that lingers in the memory long after watching it.

The last emperor: Saw it back in the 90s and plan to rewatch it someday. 8/10
