What did you watch this week my peeps? (01/31-02/06)

Here we go again!

Rate these if you saw them:

Zero Charisma (2013 Tubi): Was suggested to me after watching Spaghettiman. I’m pretty glad I did. I wasn’t too sure about the main character but I ended up being fascinated by him and what was happening to him. The scene where he invites a friend to sleep over cracked me up real good. I had to pause to recover. I’m going to take a wild shot and say that if you enjoyed the show My name is Earl you’re gonna like this movie. I’m going to go as far as to say this movie could make a good TV show. I never played D&D or fantasy card games but somehow I relate to these types of movies. And these characters felt real to me. My rating: 7.5/10

12 strong (2018 TV): Cool cast, good quality of production, a tad long but I can’t blame them for trying to go for epic. Eck, at some point they were on some lord of the rings s**t with their horses riding in the mountains, grand music in the background. It’s also the kind of movie where the enemy will shoot 1000 bullets on the good guys but barely even kill one of them while they kill entire army with a few bullets. I’m exaggerating but you know what I mean. The helicoper views were very cool and thewar action was solid. I woul rename this movie Horses & Tanks. My rating: 7/10

In too deep (1999 DVD): If I made a top 100 favourite actors list, Omar Epps would be for there for sure. He would maybe even be in my top 50, idk. If I made a top 10 favourite movie sub-genre; Afro-American gangster (thugs) movies would definitely be in there. It would maybe even be in my top five. This movie is everything that I loved and everything that I still like. My only complaint about this movie is that everywhere the undercover cop goes people ask him are you a cop. Also, everybody is looking for the mysterious drug lord called God while he himself is running the streets constantly yelling “Im God birches, remember me!” Plus we don’t see Sticky Fingaz AKA Onyx long enough. Overall it’s a very solid piece of work that showcases the struggle of an undercover cop in the streets of Cincinnati very well. My rating: 7.5/10

Escape room (2019 Netflix): Ok, let me rent about the dialogue first. There is a sentence that many reviewers use that I hate but I’m going to use it now for the first time: it seems this was written by a bunch of energy drink fueled 13 yrs old. The first 30 minutes was especially cringe. All the (poorly written) characters retorts were as cheesy as possible. That being said, some of the tricks were fun, the set designs were awesome and the tension became palpable at some point. The second half was definitely better than the first. That « system override » in the final scene was so ridiculous it was funny. 5/10

The wife and I watched the first French Netflix Original series: Lupin (2021). It’s not crazy or mind-blowing but it is entertaining. Overall: 7/10

I started the final season of The big bang theory and I watched some amazing hockey from the Montreal Canadiens!

Greetings Stonekeeper!

I walked through the living room while my dad was watching 12 Strong and saw the mounted charge you spoke of. It kinda turned me off from the movie.

My week:

The Stepfather (1987)
A psycho who murdered his family has found one to replace them. I saw this one long ago, but I really enjoyed it this time. Terry O'Quinn is absolutely great as the stepfather. Recommended.

Starship Troopers (1997)
A young recruit joins the military to be close to his ambitious girlfriend and ends up at war against the Arachnids. Many parallels to current times here. Multiple viewings and it never gets old. Highly Recommended. Would you like to learn more?

Duel (1971)
A psycho in an 18 wheeler and a businessman go to war against each other on deserted highways. First viewing here and I was really caught off guard by the narration of our hero. It was kinda trippy and can’t wait to watch again. Recommended.

Jungle Raiders (1985)
Captain Yankee and his Wild and crazy friends brave many pitfalls in search of the Ruby of Doom. Antonio Margheriti directs this Italian Raiders of the Lost Ark rip off starring Christopher Connelly and Lee Van Cleef. Non stop zany so bad it’s good action here that genre fans will love.

This week I've found The Twilight Zone on YouTube. Very irregular episodes, some are black and white and some are from the 80s. Enjoying them all though.

I saw an 80s one about a leprechaun which wasn't great but all the rest I'd give 8/10.

A Field in England (2013) (90 minutes). This is a B&W mind fuck of a movie about four deserters from the English Civil War who meet an Irish alchemist in a field, eat hallucinogenic mushroom, and are forced to dig for "treasure". They seem to be in some sort of "purgatory".

It's mesmerizing, with amazing cinematography, soundtrack, and psychedelic effects. But most people will probably not like it, as it does not follow normal narrative conventions. It also forces you to interpret it. 8/10.

Best line: "It does not surprise me that the Devil is an Irishman."

i love that movie.

i've been a little let down by most of the recent films ben wheatley has made, but i'll always love him for field in england and kill list.

reply

Amen, but definitely not for everyone! I'm thinking of watching his film Sightseers.

😎

PS I just put Sightseers on my Netflix list.

I just saw Sightseers. A strange, gruesome, blithely amoral, but funny and entertaining film. Chris takes Tina
on an "erotic odyssey" in his caravan (trailer) to see the sights of Yorkshire, England. He wants to show her his world,
but events conspire against them, and their trip takes a turn for the worse, much worse.

Hint: Don't watch the trailer because it gives away too much. 7.5/10.

this looks good too

reply

It is, good but odd.

😎

reply

Well... I'll definitely have to watch that!

Although looking at those beautiful fields and sunny skies kinda makes me want to see it in color...

reply

If you're referring to A Field in England, trust me, you would not want to see it in color. B&W is a big part of
the fascination and the wonderful strangeness of this film.

The Little Things (2021) - Kern County Deputy Sheriff Joe Deacon is sent to Los Angeles for what should have been a quick evidence-gathering assignment. Instead, he becomes embroiled in the search for a serial killer who is terrorizing the city. The movie is a mess. Denzel is great as the tormented cop but the pot just doesn't work. 5.5/10

Schindler's List (1993) - In German-occupied Poland during World War II, industrialist gradually becomes concerned for his Jewish workforce after witnessing their persecution by the Nazis. 28 years between viewings and is it still as powerful as ever. My wife cried at the end as she did back in 1993. 9/10

Rasputin: The Mad Monk (1966) - Thrown out of his monestary for licentious and drunken behaviour, Rasputin travels to St Petersburg to try his luck. Christopher Lee is great as Rasputin. It is a Hammer production so it is campy but entertaining. 6.5/10

The Odessa File (1974) - Following the suicide of an elderly Jewish man, a journalist in possession of the man's diary investigates the alleged sighting of a former S.S. Captain, who commanded a concentration camp during World War II. One word to describe this movie: laborious. The plot was too far fetched. 6/10

schindlers list: 8.5/10

Tonight I saw The Farewell (2019), an excellent film which I give 8/10. It's rated 7.6 on IMDb, and received **** on
RE.com. It's the story about a Chinese family that discovers their grandmother has only a short time to live, and decide
to keep her in the dark. It's a very heartfelt and emotional film, with moments of gentle comedy. It's based on a true story about Lulu Wang's (the director) actual family.

Here's the trailer:

Interestingly enough, I was in China and Japan in 2018, so perhaps not too far from the time this was being filmed in
Changchung. Of course, the closest I got to Changchung was Beijing.

Nice! You really had a good week! 💪👊

Yes I did, and I viewed Blast From the Past (1999) tonight.

It's the story of a brilliant scientist (Christopher Walken) and his wife (Sissy Spacek) who mistakenly spend 35 years in their elaborate fallout shelter after they think an H Bomb has been dropped on LA in 1962 during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Brendan Fraser plays their son who goes to the surface in 1998 to get supplies, and meets a girl (Alicia Silverstone).

It's a funny "fish out of water" story, and a sweet love story. I give it a 7.4/10.
