๐Ÿ“ผ PHYSICAL MEDIA IS KING!๐Ÿ’ฟ

IT JUST IS.

reply

Amen brother.

reply

Yes it is!

reply

Too much clutter, I prefer streaming

Will you finish The California Movie Library project already!?!

I want pics

reply

Without physical media you will eventally be watching highly edited and censored versions of movies.

Phyical media is the only way to keep them they way they should be.

Yes streaming is easier and as you say "less clutter" but you are at the hands of corporations who can do as i said above on a whim like we are seeing with some streaming services.

reply

Spielberg cgi'd the Fed's shotguns into walkie-talkies in E.T. and Lucas famously defaced the Star Wars OT and those are physical media though

I don't disagree with you about corporations 'fixing' things that aren't broken and maybe someday Blazing Saddles could be scrapped...that would be a shame

reply

So what if shotguns became walkie talkies or whichever order Han shot? They're just silly movies.

reply

I don't like a director going back and switching things up years after the fact

And Han straight murdered Greedo, why wouldn't he?

reply

sometimes I think I've had too much to drink and then you make me think I haven't had enough.. What the hell is Greedo?

reply

He was the bounty hunter who attempted to capture Solo at the Cantina for the gangster Jabba
Han Solo blasted him

reply

"SILLY"?...YOU BASTARD!...THEY ARE ART AND ART SHALL NOT BE ALTERED...ALSO,AS SHOGUN MENTIONED...HAN MURDERED THAT FUCKER...ITS BEST THAT WAY.

reply

Why would art shall not be altered? Also they're just silly movies. Not a high art kind that deserved to be preserved in a museum anyway. Star Wars nerds are the worst! Took stupid things too seriously and ruining the enjoyment of stupid entertainments.

reply

COOL HAND LUKE KICKS MONET'S ASS ALL DAY,EVERYDAY.

reply

Star Wars OT is a classic
Lucas tinkered with the content and left a lot of long time fans very disappointed

It was a dumb, ego-driven move and he was rightfully kicked around for doing it

reply

Should the louvre paint over the mona lisa's decolletage?

reply

Like I said, Star Wars and E.T. are not comparable to Mona Lisa. They are just silly movies for KIDS. Not a hundred years old one off masterpiece.

My son's doodles are arts too. But if he wants to change them up for no reason nobody would mind. Not all art is held in high regard.

reply

The problem then is who gets to decide what is art and what isn't?

reply

Rich people. They always decide stuffs.

reply

Star Wars and E.T. are classic entertainment and should NEVER have been fooled with

The Mona Lisa is nice enough but sort of looks like my bitchy girl cousin sneaking a fart after Thanksgiving Dinner

reply

Star Wars and E.T. are entertainments.

reply

So is all art.

reply

And I don't care if THE creator (or owner) of said art is "ruining" their own product. It's theirs ffs! Don't like it? MAKE YOUR OWN ARTS.

reply

I agree that if it's the artist changing their own art, so Lucas is within his rights. Fans may not like it, but as long as it's the director, or the artist who's doing it, it is their work. When it's not the artist, that's where the line is blurred for me.

I do make my own arts, and if someone else went and changed what I've created without my knowledge or permission for distribution, I would have a problem with that. Especially if the original wasn't available anymore.

reply

> Without physical media you will eventally be watching highly edited and censored versions of movies.

And sometimes you won't have the movie at all. Song Of The South won two Academy Awards and was nominated for a third, had an original song that's still familiar seventy-five years later, was a hit at the box office, and although some blacks were offended by it even then many others weren't. Yet Disney won't stream it. There are some places one can buy it on DVD, but it's unclear whether they do so with Disney's permission or mere lack of objection.

reply

Yes, I've read about this movie
Censoring or flat out burying old works because they are offensive is a crybaby move

You can still purchase Mein Kampf and I did, I read it and it was beyond absurd but it gives some insight into what a lot of people were willing to believe at a certain point in history

reply

I OWN A "PREMIUM BOOTLEG" OF SONG OF THE SOUTH...ONLY OTHER WAYS TO OWN IT ARE THE UBER RARE EUROPEAN VHS OR JAPANESE LASERDISC.

reply

Look no further: https://vfa.expert/

reply

This is how I picture KOWALSKI but that guy doesn't have a giant beard and a doobie๐Ÿ˜ƒ

reply

I APPRECIATE THE BEARD AND DOOBIE PART...BUT COME ON!...THAT DUDE IS LOOKS LIKE HE MIGHT DIE AT ANY TIME,AND HE PROBABLY WOULDNT NOTICE.๐Ÿค”

I ON THE OTHER HAND AM A 6 FOOT 6,MUSCLED,SIZE 16 SHOE,BLONDE HAIR,BLUE EYED SPECIMEN OF AWESOMENESS....NOT TO TOOT MY OWN HORN,BUT HITLER WOULD HAVE HAD TO HID HIS ERECTION IF HE EVER GOT A GANDER AT ME.๐Ÿ˜Ž

reply

i picture you more of the howard stern like physique.

reply

DOLPH LUNDGREN IS CLOSER.

reply

The King is dead.

reply

Excuse me?

reply

Long live the King!

reply

Phew ๐Ÿ˜… I was worried for a minute.

reply

[deleted]

Larry King died a week or so ago

reply

As much as I agree, there's nothing wrong with digital backups.

reply

^^^This!!!^^^

reply

Although I went download/streaming-only some time ago. I admit the advantages of physical:

Bonus features/material
Larger selection of high-res titles
Works when the internet is down
The visceral feel of handling physical media
(Vinyl fans would add sound & cover art. But digital is very, very good these days, and cover art can be displayed via a player or computer)

But I went "discless" and really, for me, there is no going back.

reply

For movies yes, but for music I'd have way too much clutter so it's mostly on MP3 and has been for years.

reply

I STOPPED BUYING CDS MYSELF FEW YEARS AGO...ALTHOUGH I ALREADY HAVE LIKE 5000 IN SLEEVES ALPHABETIZED IN 3 HUGE DJ CASES.

reply

I still buy second hand CD's, burn them to MP3, back them up and sell them on.

reply

ANYTHING PAST WHAT I ALREADY OWNED ON CD...I RIP IT OFF YOUTUBE AND BURN IT ONTO DISC.

reply

Try using FLAC, way better than MP3. I recently dug out my old CD collections and ripped them into FLACs.

reply

gigabyte hard drives and flash drives are so inexpensive now--a terabyte is pretty standard on home computers--there is no reason I can think of not to use flac.

reply

IT SOUNDS DUMB...THATS A PRETTY GOOD REASON.๐Ÿ™‚

reply

True. One disadvantage of FLAC is when you use Apple stuffs. Then ALAC would be more convenient. Not using Apple stuffs is even better.

reply

For me it was a 3 way fight between music, comics and films. Sadly, films lost.

reply

I bet you have a room full of Vinyl! ๐Ÿ˜‰

reply

The loft conversion (Manpad - 10metres by 5 metres ) houses my comic and music collection (over 40 years of collecting). I stopped counting when I hit 3000 vinyl albums and 10000 vinyl singles (the ultra rare stuff is held in storage. There's also some music memorabilia up there, along with my turntable, media stuff, instruments and home studio (from my music industry days).

The music memorabilia has now spilled out to the Kingshed pub at the bottom of the garden.

reply

Nice! I'm thinking about getting a few vinyl (and record player) now it's back in fashion, I wish I didn't sell all my old picture discs!

reply

Whatever you do, don't look in Record Collector to see how much they're worth.

reply

What turntable do you have? I have several but Iโ€™ve been wanting Technics 1200โ€™s for years.

reply

Marantz turntable / B and W speakers.

reply

Iโ€™m not familiar with those but Iโ€™ll look it up.

reply

Without wanting to get too techy, what you'll find with sound systems, is that you'll reach a certain level both cost wise and audio wise. After that you have to spend a disproportional amount, in order to achieve a negligible improvement in sound quality.

My set up is the upper end of quality before we enter the realms of silly money (if that makes sense).

reply

Indeed it does. ๐Ÿ‘

reply

Great stuff! My brother has a pair of B&Ws and they sound excellent. He also has a pair of Dynaudio bookshelf speakers. The big B&Ws are better (and they look so freaking cool with the 70s spaceship tweeter design.)

reply

Mine are about 4ft high.

reply

I've been into stereo equipment since the mid 1980s. I have very limited space now, so my current system is not the best I've ever owned, but still pretty good. Magnepan speakers probably remain my favorite, but need a bigger space than I have now. The most expensive system I ever owned was an MBL 7008 integrated amp, Krell Resolution 3 speakers, and Esoteric DV-50 universal player.

Currently

Totem Acoustic Arro speakers
Bel Canto C5i integrated amp
Bryston Pi digital music player

reply

Ooooh, this is nice stuff.

reply

there's lots to be said for it.

you never have to worry about some streaming service losing rights to a movie you want to see & it becoming impossible to find.

but there's a lot to be said for living an uncluttered life with no pieces of plastic taking over your living area.

there's no right answer. just preferences!

reply

For me, the problem was that I always managed to scratch my CDs.
Somehow, it has been much easier for me to keep my DVDs in a good condition.
Maybe I just have matured over the years.
But it was easier for me to preserve audio cassettes as well.
Likewise, I managed to keep a selection of old VHS tapes.
Nevertheless, it is hard for me to see any drawback with streaming services.
Except for maybe that you might lose Internet sometimes, like a different poster said.
However, it seems to not happen often enough to be a huge issue to me.

reply

EDITS AND CONTENT CHANGES,LACK OF AVAILABILITY,REQUIRES INTERNET,NO ARTWORK,NO BONUS MATERIALS.

I don't have enough beer to read this:)
