Never heard of soul cakes and I lived in Shropshire for 20 years 🤔
Also to the non Brits, don't get triggered by The Black Country or Faggots. Both are old terms here and neither are discriminatory!

Fags are slang for cigarettes too, aren't they?
shareYeah. A fsg in Britain is a cigarette. A faggot is a kind of meatball made from offal with herbs & spices in a gravy.
shareI watch quite a few British TV shows, but wasn't sure it it was still used or not.
shareI've read fag or faggot in literature too and it meant a bundle of sticks or kindling for a fireplace
English is a strange language!

Sounds interesting. How pronounced is the taste of the black pepper in this?
shareYou can feel it’s peppery, but It’s not too pronounced, I think it is well balanced with other spices.
I never made it myself, just tried store bought ones. But as much as I can see from the recipe I linked here, it has equal amount of black pepper, cloves, cinnamon and nutmeg.
