Silly / uncommon movie character names that worked and didn't work

Worked:
Buffy Summers from Buffy The Vampire Slayer. Who'd name their kid Buffy lol? Yet somehow it sounds right.

Didn't work:
Murph (Murphy Cooper) from Interstellar. That's just a weird name to call your daughter. Not funny, not clever. Fail.

reply

Those are good. Mine:

Worked:
Draco Malfoy from the Harry Potter series. It shouldn't work, but it does.

Didn't work:
Bella Swan of Twilight. Not even that unusual of a name, but it still sounds very fake.

reply

Bella Swan is so try hard, Bella = Beautiful, Beautiful Swan. Ho hum!

reply

I worked with a girl called Murphy and while I agree it has an unusual sound, when I got to know her it seemed to fit her perfectly. I used to call her Smurfy as a nickname. She was a doll 🤗

"Marion" - Stallone's name in cobra
"Gabriel" - Stallone's name in Cliffhanger

reply

And Barney the purple dinosaur - Stallone's name in The Expandables.

reply

Marion was John Wayne's real name

reply

PISTACHIO DISGUISEY.

reply

It worked AND didn't work at the same time!

reply

Take that underwear off your head!

Worked:
Knives Chau from Scott Pilgrim movie. Yes it made fun of real names of Hong Kong people which sometimes use random household objects for given names, like Fruit Chan (real singer name! No kidding!) or Race Wong, Butterfly Hu, even Oxide Pang (I did not make these up!) Knives Chau actually sounds pretty cool.

Didn't work:
Marty McFly. Marty sounds all right. But when it's Marty McFly it's just too silly to me. As if he's a character in SpongeBob SquarePants cartoon.

reply

As I can't find any references to the surname McFly being used in real life, I guess I have to assume that it's made up.

reply

Plenty of instances of this surname IRL on family history websites.

reply

I see.
Thanks for telling me, because I couldn't find anything but references to the BTTF franchise and a British pop band.

reply

Yes, the usual thing that comes up is McFly the band! 😉

reply

Buffy Summers works because it is the last thing you would expect a vampire slayer to be named.

reply

Pepper Potts from Iron Man and I know it based on a comic but it just works well. Has that James Bond vibe to it.

reply

Pussy Galore from Goldfinger. I know it was meant as a dirty joke but it worked.

reply

And also Xenia Onatopp from GoldenEye. Very catchy stupid names.

reply

I think Alotta Fagina from Austin Powers was a pretty good name too😄

reply

Yea.. but Fook Mi and Fook Yu are terrible names. Ironically, Fuk Yu is a real name!

reply

Felicity Shagwell. Shagwell by day...Shagverywell by night.

reply

Oh behave!

Molly Goodhead

[edit] That was HOLLY Goodhead. I think I've been dropping the wrong name for 40 years!
