I GOT MY SECOND DOSE OF THE COVID-19 VACCINE!!!

There are mutations on the way, viruses constantly mutate or exchange DNA, and with so many hosts available there are already mutations. But I read an article in today that said the Prizer vaccine also seems to be effective against the new mutation, the one that's more contagious. Yay, Pfizer!

So this is why we all have to take steps to protect ourselves and the people around us, the fewer infections ther are the less the virus has a chance to mutate. I mean it - don't fuck around! If you think that masks are uncool or you're in no danger yourself, educate yourself on this virus! It's bad, deadly in too many cases, and it's insidious because the onset is so slow that it people have days or weeks of spreading the virus before they have any idea they have it.

California, US. I don't say anything personal about myself on this forum, but I'm among the first in the state to get it.

I think it's fair to take ten seconds out of my day to tell people honestly how it goes, because so many people are afraid of the vaccine.

DNA & RNA are not the same thing. You won't mutate.

I guess I think the opposite. I think it was too centralised. The ACIP recommendations are that Phase 1a is being vaccinated but matching the number of doses in the vials can be unpredictable, the vials are carried in pizza boxes of a particular size, they have to be used within a specific window after being thawed, etc. So it's impossible to perfectly schedule appointments for the exact right number of people, and then what if someone can't show because their surgery went long or whatever. If there was more flexibility, you could have waiting lists of people in phase 1b or 1c who could be offered leftover doses as long as they can show up in time. Or maybe you could have a contingency that you could vaxx spouses of 1a people if there were leftover doses. One story was a nurse who went out in the street and gathered up three bystanders because that's who she was able to get.

I do agree that there needs to be some kind of window so that people in the preferred group can't keep delaying and delaying their decision while vaccine goes to waste. Make your appointment by X time otherwise we will open the appointment window to people lower down on the list. I do NOT think (as some have suggested) that people in 1a who decline the current offer date should go to the back of the line. I think it's reasonable that there are young health professionals who want to wait a few more weeks for more data because they consider their personal risk to be low.

I completely agree on the question of whether it is ok to hold back doses. My husband works in pharma mf and it does happen that drug lots fail quality control and can't be released. (Sometimes drugs can be on shortage for months, as with the shortage of EpiPens a couple of years ago.) Fortunately, the vaccine advisory committee is really good, they are asking all the right questions. I don't think they will approve the change unless it will work.

I was reading where the UK is also considering releasing all of the vaccines being held back for 2nd doses. Is that true?

I'm happy for you! Can't wait until I can get it. I suspect it will be March or April at the earliest, that it will be my turn.
