I've never seen "Schindler's List". Is it any good?

I've seen it referenced in that "Seinfeld" episode.

It's a masterpiece and one of the greatest films of all time. It's an absolute must see.

reply

Agreed. It's one of those films I held off seeing for a long time, but when I did... It's incredibly gripping, heartbreaking, a masterpiece of filmmaking.

It changed my life, or helped to change it, I saw it at a time when I was trying to better myself and change careers. When I saw the film and it ended and I was sitting there like I'd been hit in the head with a hammer, my first coherent thought was "Well, why aren't *I* helping people???". So yes, I ended up going back to school and going into the helping professions, and helping others and changing my own life for the better. I don't give the movie sole credit or anything, but it did give me a kick in the right direction.

It’s an incredible film.

That said, I’ve seen it once when it was released and have never been compelled to watch it again. That’s no reflection on its quality, there are just some films that are so impactful and emotionally gruelling that once is enough.

I feel the same way. Some movies hit you in such an emotional way that you cannot bear to watch them again. For what it's worth, I haven't seen Schindler's List, either.

reply

Same here. I think it's the last Spielberg masterpiece (Bridge of Spies is a very good movie, it's far from being a masterpiece, though). And I've seen more than once his 80s movies... but I've never rewatched the Schindler one.

reply

Same here. It's a tough watch, but worth it.

reply

Same. It's impact is profound.

i've only seen it once, & that was 25 years ago, i guess. & i'm a cranky contrarian, so take everything i say with heaping upon heaping of salt.

i have very bad memories of it. i thought it had some really unforgivably hokey, very spielbergish sentimental moments that severely undercut it. i don't want to get into the details, since you haven't seen it, but spielberg has always gone for sentimentality, for making you FEEL THINGS, and i think those instincts really hurt it.

i'm sure i'm wrong and everyone who loves it is right. i'm wrong about lots of things. but i didn't like it much.

son of saul from 2015 is a much better holocaust film imo. it's brutal & deeply sad & restrained, & all the more powerful for that.

reply

I don't care about the sentimentalism. After all, the whole WW2 topic is heavily manipulated. In a German soldier's words: "the big lesson I learnt in WW2 was that winners write History".

Spielberg didn't do anything that it's regularly done. At least, he made a masterpiece out of it.

If you don't like it you must be a Nazi.

reply

It's excellent in pretty much every category (script, cinematography, music, acting, set design and costume...) but it's very heavy

reply

It's very good but incredibly sad. I cried throughout most of the film....

reply

I suspect I'd do the same.

reply

all movie fans should see it.

reply

Judging from the responses here, I suppose calling it "good" is a massive understatement.

Yes it is.
