reply

Oh those crazy Russians.

reply

And The Bee Gees. I must have watched my parents VHS copy of Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band a hundred times when I was a kid. Great list there. Lots of memories. 👍

You know, I always felt like Gary Newman’s Cars Was kind of disco too.

reply

Yes, there's a lot of artists that strayed into Disco territory (even Rod Stewart, lol). Gary Numan was definitely more Synth Pop and was heavily influenced by Kraftwerk and Eno era Roxy and Bowie.

reply

Kraftwerk is a one of a kind. They have tracks from the early 80’s that were still being played in clubs in the mid 90’s in full or sampled into other music. They are serious pioneers. Speaking of Kraftwerk, I went to all the vinyl shops in New Orleans yesterday and there is always a turntable available for test listening before you buy. One of the shops I went to had a Kraftwerk slip mat on its turntable deck. I almost asked them how much they wanted for it!

reply

Absolutely! Massive influence on everything from Synth Pop, to Industrial, to Hip-hop and all the way back again.

reply

I loved Cars.

I was unsure about Blondie; are they New Wave, Pop, Rock?

reply

Did you add ABBA? That’s another good one.

reply

I had ABBA there from the start.

reply

Oh I didn’t notice it. 👍

reply

I have to agree with you about many of those artists (even though I think ABBA only did one disco album).
But I want to remind you that The Jacksons and Michael Jackson did some nice disco songs in the late '70s.

reply

Absolutely! The Off The Wall album was my favourite MJ era. The only reason I didn't include him (or the Jacksons) was because I associate them overall with Dance/Pop rather than Disco, although you could easily use the same argument for ABBA.

reply

When it comes to Michael as a solo artist, "Off the wall" is indeed the album with the most Disco influences.
But I say he did more Disco with his brothers, even if the line between disco and dance/pop sure was unclear in the late '70s.
ABBA only did Disco on the "Voulez-Vous" album if you ask me.

reply

Both ABBA and The Bee Gees suffered a huge backlash after the Disco boom ended and it took many years before they were (quite rightly) appreciated again. Somehow both MJ and The Jacksons seemed to escape this (although MJ would have other problems to worry about later on).

ABBA only did two more albums after their disco album "Voulez-Vous". But it was mostly because the members needed a break from each other.

Bee Gees had a few minor hits later on, but it was not disco songs.

MJ was good at following the trends and was a very successful solo artist in the '80s and the '90s.
