Can modern art be considered art?

reply

After visiting a "Modern Art" museum once, I'd say no. It's just a consolation style for people who can't paint or sculpt to save their lives; so they throw a bunch of junk together, hammer a nail in the wall, embroider themselves topless, make a slip out of wire mesh, or cut out hand-prints in copper and call it "art."

Well said.

It reminds me of when Paul Keating an ex Prime Minister of Australia was being verbally harangued by a very young woman about Government funding for the Arts and she said " I'm an artist ! " And he said " Yeah, a bull artist ! " The look on her face was priceless.

Paul Keating was and is a great collector of art and very knowledgeable.

Of course it can, but it's up to the individual as to what kind of art they prefer.

define art.

then you'll have your answer.

I can't see how advanced finger painting or splashing paint onto a canvas, melting metal into a twisted shape etc can have any meaning. To me it's not art.

An unmade bed? No, it's just an unmade bed!

reply

Since all old art was once considered modern art, yes. But what qualifies as art doesn't always qualify as good.

reply

Just curious - what do you consider "modern?" Abstract or something else?????

reply

No, even a monkey can do most of it. Skill has to be involved.
