Worst special effects in a theatrical release?

Cant think of anything worse than the CGI from Spawn. It quite literally looks ripped from a PS1 video game.

Some other bad ones:
I Am Legend
Jeepers Creepers 3
Escape From LA

What else?

reply

Lawnmower Man was pretty bad.

I think movies that depict virtual space are one of the few times that anything goes for depicting that space. For me, the vfx suit the movie perfectly, and give it a very special metaphysical and psychedelic quality. I also happen to be highly nostalgic for early experimental computer animation. I think Lawnmower Man looks GREAT, and I kind of love it on the whole too. I feel like it's a misunderstood and unfairly maligned movie. Gives me full body chills and acid flashbacks every time.

reply

I enjoyed the movie overall, just thought the effects were cheesy.

reply

I enjoyed the movie overall

Well that is chill. Y'good guy, Texas. 😎

Black Panther

reply

most of it looked quite good as i recall, but that last battle was really poor, wasn't it? i remember thinking the characters had a really rubbery, unrealistic look that seemed awfully shoddy & cheap.

reply

For their budget and their experience / name on making SFX, the result is unacceptably bad. It's like buying a wristwatch from the best brand of Swiss watchmaker (with a Swiss pricetag too) and then getting the quality of a cheap Chinese knockoff.

reply

Some of the CGI in the 'Lord of the Rings' films was pretty dire.

reply

Not to be contrary, but I will take the CGI in LOTR over the Hobbit movies any day.

reply

Be as contrary as you like. The CGI in LoTR was rudimentary. Given how old the films are that is to be expected. They overdid the CGI in the Hobbit films it's true. But as pure entertainment I prefer the Hobbit films to the LoTR ones. My only regret is that Saoirse Ronan turned down the role of Tauriel that then went to Evangeline Lilly.

TRON (1982)

reply

The special effects in Tron were not only good, but amazing.

It's a movie made in the 80s, most of the movie is CGI, and it's still perfectly watchable and enjoyable. You won't find anyone else like that.

reply

I just revisited Tron last week and dude it is aesthetically INCREDIBLE.
The movie is an artistic experiment above anything else and it's absolutely fascinating to behold.
There's so much vision and innovation happening there. No other movie looks and feels like it, and in the context of its virtual world, I find it holds up 100%. Yes, as a movie it leaves a bit to be desired, but as a piece of experimental art I could just about cry it makes me so happy the miracle of something like it ever having been made transpired.

Yor, The Hunter from the Future (1983)

reply

This joint makes me so happy.

reply

Cape, I would like to remind you that this is Rebruary (Reb Brown awareness month) and it’s your duty to list your favorite Reb Brown movie.

reply

LOOOOOOL shiiit that's right!!

Dude that honor definitely goes to YOR!

However who can forget such meisterverks as The Howling II... Robowar... Street Hunter... Space Mutiny...

I'll tell you what though, there are definitely a good many I have yet to see, of which I have no doubt are timeless tours de force, and in honor of mighty REBRUARY I will cut the choice meats and view some more Reb material!

reply

YES! There is no higher honor than to know of the choice meats!!!

I salute you!

I must recommend Strike Commando (1987). Watch how Reb destroys these huts in a fit of rage screaming Jakoda, Ja-ko-Da!!!!!! After this your bound to want to find out who Jakoda is and what he could have done to send Reb into such a tizzy.

LMFBOOOOOOOO!! πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚
Man I wanna see a supercut of all the takes of this they clearly did. In lieu of that, this is amazing on loop. Can't wait to get to the bottom of this lol.

The effects really get bad at 41 seconds in:

I'm surprised King Matthias's scorpion/human hybrid from The Mummy Returns (2001) has not been mentioned yet. He appears towards the end of the movie as the guardian of a sacred lair of sorts, him being named "The Scorpion King" and all. It's one of the Rock's (Dwayne Johnson's) early roles, and boy, does he look plastic. Even the little green army men figures in Toy Story (1994) had a more realistic look!

reply

Excellent pick
The Rock/Scorpion CGI was so bad it made me laugh out loud

reply

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers the movie (1995)
Super Mario Brothers (1993)

Pretty much any movie with major stop-motion animation in it.

reply

Pretty much any movie with major stop-motion animation in it.

I couldn't possibly disagree with something more lol. Composited stop-mo is my BLOOD.

reply

There are a few exceptions to the stop-motion rule, because the great story in the movie overcame that.

Coneheads (1993)
Clash of the Titans (1981)
Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger (1977)

reply

Nice picks, I agree with all of these! I do personally love the look of the effects in and of themselves though. My life literally revolves around this stuff, but I realize the appeal is niche.
