I'll more than likely never return to the movie theaters

And I say that for various reasons. I'm mostly pointing the finger at AMC theaters in this case. But going to the movies just isn't what it used to be. Maybe it's just me. I can't bring myself to return to the theaters. At least not anytime soon. Back in early October, I went to see a screening of Joker. It at least seemed like a film worth seeing. Aside from my terrible movie theater experience, I really did enjoy the movie. But here are the reasons why I won't be returning to the movie theaters:

1.) I'm appalled that AMC theaters has assigned seating nowadays. This is beyond idiotic and awful, in my opinion. One of the biggest joys of going to the movies, was entering the theater, and being able to pick your seat of choice. It's what added to the comfort factor. But I guess that's just not the case anymore. I even asked the guy at the ticket booth if there was assigned seating, and he clearly looked me in the eye and said, "no", and then shortly after, asked me to pick which seating placement I wanted. I mean, WTF?! But still, I really wanted to see the movie, so I just settled with my assigned seat. But still, from the start, that upset me.

2.) The audience was extremely obnoxious. They made little comments every minute and talked out loud. They were very disrespectful. It was so annoying. For a moment, I really thought I was going to walk out of the theater.

3.) Yet again, going back to the assigned seating factor...this created a lot of confusion within the theater. Instead of people just picking their seat of choice and sitting down, everyone kept searching for their seat number. This created so much unnecessary confusion.

4.) Yet again, at the ticket booth, I clearly asked the guy at the booth if I was paying for a "dine-in" theater, and he clearly told me no. But regardless, there were still buttons on the seats that had the option to request food and beverage services. This was also very distracting. During the middle of the film, some random audience member could push the button, and an employee would come rushing to their service. I mean, literally, during the middle of the movie, in front of everyone, someone would suddenly realize that they wanted some popcorn or a mini pizza. It was so distracting. This is a movie theater, not a dang restaurant.

5.) This guy next to me kept making these little snickering laughing sounds. And this lady next to me smelled like a combination of spicy chicken wings and beer. Yet again, super distracting. lol

6.) At one point throughout the film, I had to use the restroom. Believe me, I didn't want to. I didn't wanna miss the movie. But dang it, I had to go. When I got up to use the restroom, a bunch of people got really mad at me. They basically hissed. And all I kept thinking was, "Oh, so people can request service every 5 minutes and make comments throughout the entire film, and you're cool with that. But I gotta go take a piss, and I'm being as quiet as possible...and I'm the annoying one. Nice."

7.) And lastly, I guess I've just lost my patience for movie theaters. I'm used to enjoying movies in the comfort of my own home. There were way too many distractions.

So, yeah. There you have it. I apologize for my little rant. But these things needed to be said.

I gave up on theaters about three decades ago, mainly due to rude audience members who just could not refrain from talking all through the show. Apparently they forgot they weren't sitting in their own living rooms. I decided I was not going to spend my hard-earned money just to hear their jabbering. I swore I'd never go back, and I haven't. I can only imagine how bad it must be since the advent of cell phones. And food service?? Definitely not.

Every movie I go see there is always the guy who can't coughing. I saw Joker a few weeks ago and coughing guy was two seats in front of me. It never fails.

reply

Oh yeah - the CC - constant cougher. How annoying. I would skip going to a theater, a restaurant, a concert, or just about anywhere if I had a constant cough. Heck, my having a cough is annoying enough to me! There's no way I'd expect others to listen to it. How about those who sniff, sniff, sniff constantly? Blow your nose, for Pete's sake.

You should try the new theater experience. As I wrote prior I had quit going for the reasons you wrote. The secret is taking in the early matinee...10:30 to 11:30 AM. I saw Captain Marvel and I was the only one in the mini theater. I felt like I was at home!

I still love going to the movies and hope to go this weekend. I like reserved seating. I have a favourite seat (E1) that I like to pick. The audiences when I go aren't usually bad at all. People tend to be quiet during the movie in the theaters I go to.

It has been years since I last went to a movie theater, because I get pains in my back and my neck (and lately, my leg) from sitting down in a seat for too long. But also, I prefer to watch a movie at home, where I can take breaks whenever I want and need to, and I can hopefully lie down in my bed. However, I don't remember having issues with the other people in the movie theater.

I used to enjoy going once a week about 10 years ago but stopped because of the distractions from other people in the audience. This was despite that I almost always go on nights when most people don’t go out and avoided the first week of release. I purposely sit close to the front so that there is no one close to me but I can still hear people from several rows back. Now I just limit myself to IMAX showings because they play the sound loud enough to drown out the noise from other patrons.

I go to the discount theaters if I go at.

I’m sure there’ll be something you’ll be compelled to see on the big screen!

Maybe if Joker 2 comes out. Lol

Who the hell wants to go to a movie theater? Home theater can give you much better sound, picture, convenience, food/beverage, bathroom breaks and options e.g., closed captions for Mc mumble mumble programs) than any freaking theater. Also, no cell phones and no asshats and NO
BURSTING BLADDERS. Home Theater re-introduces The Intermission via Mr. Paula Button.

reply

Agreed. Home theater is pretty much as good as it gets.

Oh, wow, if I were in your place, that would also piss me off and change my desire to go to cinemas. I have opposite situation here where I live. Cinemas here have best environment, at least for me - hall is empty (almost).

First, I buy ticket online with much cheaper price, secondly I can buy popcorn and pepsi (you can choose sizes) online too from the same website with great discounts like 40%. Also, when you buy ticket, it shows you on the screen which seats are available to buy and which not. Anyway, when I buy them (it usually cost for me 7$ (2 tickets, 2 popcorn and 2 pepsi), then I commute there via train, because it's a bit faraway (public transport is common thing here). We go to the mall where cinema is located. Then we get those popcorn and pepsies and then show that guy/girl my digital tickets in my phone. After that we enter the hall, which as always is empty. Maybe one or 2 couple may come and that's it! And hall is huge! I can choose whichever sit I want (who cares since we're alone there) and enjoy movie in complete silence, without those annoying, distracting people... I don't know why it's always empty. I have my guess, that it's probably because of language. You see, when you're going on the website where you buy tickets and when you choose movie, you can choose on what language you want to watch that movie (native English or dubbed ones). We always choose English, because my wife doesn't understand other languages. So, I'm thinking maybe it's always empty, because people usually choose other languages, I don't know. Anyway, I'm not complaining lol. It's like an adventure for us. I really like how it is here. Oh, and there are 3 locations. One with Imax which has biggest screen, another one with dolby atmos system... You also choose locations in which cinema you want to watch. Imax is great!
