Actors who left hit tv shows, then career tanked

The most famous example was David Caruso who left NYPD Blue with ghe promise of a film career, but that never happened.

Also thinking of Josh Charles who left The Good Wife but hasn’t been doing much since.

Caruso's film career tanked, but he was fortunate get another shot in tv with CSI: Miami.

Shelley Long from Cheers also comes to mind.

Would loved to have seen her give adult films a go...but my preference has always been for the super skinny petite chested ladies.

reply

Shelley was in a few ‘80s comedy films. She suffered the same fate as many actresses, aging out of the business.

An old example would be McLean Stevenson from M*A*S*H; worst mistake he ever made. Or the woman who played Kate in NCIS; I haven't heard much from her, save for that stupid "Rizzolie and Isles" show. Has anybody seen the guy who played Sweets in "Bones" lately?

Oh here's a good one: everyone who ever left the "Dr. Who" shows: you never see or hear from them again except in tv productions that are mostly ignored or are very forgettable.

reply

David Tennant? Christopher Eccleston had a solid career before and after Who. Freema Agyeman seems to be doing pretty ok for herself. Peter Capaldi had such a strong career before I'm sure he'll be fine as well. Matt Smith had the Crown which really wasn't ignored.

reply

David Tennant just did an adaptation of Good Omens.

reply

Exactly. as well as Jessica Jones, The Escape Artist, Camping, Broadchurch, Ducktales....just to name a few.

reply

He had been in films prior to NYPD Blue with some notability such as with the first Rambo movie. That said he was never going to be an A-lister.

reply

I thought Caruso was replaced because he was an asshole and acoholic and that's why his career tanked. That said, the show was less without him.

reply

Dan Stevens left Downton Abbey after three seasons.

reply

He's done fairly well with the show Legion and a few films.

reply

Farrah Fawcett left Charlie's Angels, and with the exception of The Burning Bed, her career flopped.

reply

Good point. Amazing she became such a ‘70s icon from one season on a tv show and a poster.

reply

Ed Skrein from Game of Thrones.

reply

Who? Guess you made your point.

reply

Kramer was cursed I tell you - Michael Richards who relied on physical comedy didn't fair well on the spin off

reply

He did Airheads before Seinfeld took off.

reply

he did? he was funny in UHF

reply

What's that?

reply

Weird Al movie

reply

I recall that he went some racist rant at one of his comedy gigs a number of years ago. That didn't help his career any.

reply

but that was after his tv show failed, I agree though

reply

Richards should have been Inspector Gadget!
