Favorite Romantic Movie. What's yours?

There are many types of romantic movies. Some are funny. Some can be sexy.
Some have happy endings and some are bittersweet.
I'd say that my favorite is charming with a bittersweet ending...

Somewhere in Time (1980) (movie): A Chicago playwright uses self-hypnosis to travel back in time and meet the actress whose vintage portrait hangs in a grand hotel.

Cast: Christopher Reeve (Richard Collier), Jane Seymour (Elise McKenna), Christopher Plummer (William Fawcett Robinson), Teresa Wright (Laura Roberts), Bill Erwin (Arthur Biehl)

It's difficult for me to pick just one.

Murphy's Romance with James Garner and Sally Field.
Sleepless in Seattle with Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan.
Roman Holiday with Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck.
Breakfast at Tiffany's with Audrey Hepburn.
An Affair to Remember with Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr.

I know! I'm suddenly starting to remember other romances I love watching. And here I thought horror, suspense and thrillers were my favorite genres! Actually, they are.
Since you mentioned Cary Grant, I'll name three screen romances in three of my favorite Hitchcock films.
Cary Grant & Ingrid Bergman - Notorious.
Cary Grant & Eva Marie Saint- North By northwest.
James Stewart & Grace Kelly- Rear Window.

By the way, I could watch Murphy's Romance over and over again. James Garner was so good in that... for that matter, he was great in just about everything he did. He was so natural and easy. He made it all look easy!

So true about Murphy's Romance, although I sort of thought it should have been called Emma's Romance. But, whatever. James Garner is one of my favorite actors, as is Jimmy Stewart (along with Tom Hanks).

I don't think I've ever seen Notorious. I'll have to add it to my watch list. The thing about Roman Holiday that I like so much is that it was shot on location.

I like Christian Slater, but after having read the premise, is this really a romantic movie? Not trying to be snarky - it's a genuine question.

Yes it is, it's many things, but the title is sincere. Also you should probably stop reading premises. When are they ever even close to the experience of the movie?

Synopses keep you away from the best stuff, and draw you into crap. I love to go into a movie with only the vaguest notion of what it is. Directors, writers, and actors are who I follow around. When I like some stuff by any one of them I give their other stuff a try. My motto when I was a teenager was "no preconceived notions" and if I can avoid any or all of a trailer for a new movie I know I'm going to see I will. Having seen literally nothing about something primes you for optimal enjoyment.

Trailers can be VERY misleading! Not to mention that they often show the best parts of the movie. I should adopt your "no preconceived notions."

It has really worked out for me. It's the only way for me to know how I really feel about a movie, to know I am not being manipulated by advertising or other people's opinions

I've requested this movie from my local library (that's how I get my entertainment as I don't have TV and don't stream). Apparently it's popular because there's a waiting list of 14. No problem though, I can wait. Easy, since it's free this way.

From what I would consider to be a "romantic" movie, as the romance or relationship portion is the main subject of the film, I would have to say Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind would probably be my favorite romantic movie, because of the concept of Joel realizing he wants to keep the memories of Clementine, while they are literally erasing her from his memory, and he is trying to keep her hidden somewhere in his memory bank, which is some romantic shit if you ask me, haha...and my more obvious choice is Casablanca. No explanation needed for that one.
