Favorite Romantic Movie. What's yours?

There are many types of romantic movies. Some are funny. Some can be sexy.
Some have happy endings and some are bittersweet.
I'd say that my favorite is charming with a bittersweet ending...

Somewhere in Time (1980) (movie): A Chicago playwright uses self-hypnosis to travel back in time and meet the actress whose vintage portrait hangs in a grand hotel.

Cast: Christopher Reeve (Richard Collier), Jane Seymour (Elise McKenna), Christopher Plummer (William Fawcett Robinson), Teresa Wright (Laura Roberts), Bill Erwin (Arthur Biehl)

SIT is a favorite romantic movie of mine along with The Goodbye Girl

Loved The Goodbye Girl! Good movie! Good play!

Brief Encounter (1945) - a classic

Also:
Brooklyn
Four Weddings and a Funeral
When Harry Met Sally
Dirty Dancing
Jane Eyre
About Time - very bittersweet ending

Four Weddings and a Funeral is another favorite. I'm not a big Andi MacDowell fan, but with the great cast and the sweet stories, I put up with her.

I enjoyed Somewhere in Time.

Personally though I'm going to have to go with So I Married an Axe Murderer.

Four Weddings is a close runner-up.

I like time travel stuff. 11/22/63 by Stephen King is another time travel story with a beautiful love story. It was made into a minie series on Hulu a couple of years ago. My husband found the dvd set at WalMart last year and got it for me. Good movie adaptation!

I saw that one too Margo. James Defranco was in it.

I wasn't super chuffed with how it ended but it was an enjoyable enough watch.

Have you read The Time Traveller's Wife?

The film wasn't so good but the book was amazing.

reply

No. I still haven't read it yet, but I will. Someone here recommended it not long ago.

Come to think of it, I remember enjoying Franco Zeffirelli's Romeo & Juliet which was followed two years later by Love Story. Both were about star-crossed lovers.

reply

Franco Zeffirelli's Romeo & Juliet was a beautiful movie. I went with my older sisters several times to see it. At the time, it was the biggest thing, and the song was a hit too.
I recently watched it again. Olivia Hussy was sort of a disappointment all these years later. Back then, every guy wanted her and all of us girls wanted to be her.
Years later, I personally get annoyed with her whining. It's probably just me, but I cringe while watching her now. She has gotten better at acting over the years.

It was pretty much of a perfect date night movie for me. Went to Pizza Hut before the flick and smooched in the back seat of the cab on the way home afterward.

😁 Sweet memories!

I do have another favorite. Breakfast at Tiffanys. I can't believe I forgot that one!

I confess that given a choice, I would much rather sit down and watch a thriller or a horror movie. I just thought I'd find out what movies pull at everyone's heartstrings.

reply

Which just made me think of Message in a Bottle.

reply

That's the one with Kevin Costner, right? I haven't seen that in quite some time. Good movie!

reply

Yes, it just suddenly came to mind after reading your post.

Brief Encounter.

It Happened One Night
Gone with the Wind
The African Queen

and just for a funny romance, Some Like It Hot

reply

The African Queen is one that I could watch over and over. I have, since Netflix added it.😁
