Hey you, yes you, what did you watch on this turbulent week? (11/02-17/02)

More Winter Olympics for me. Snowboard (have you seen the half pipe japanese accident? ouch!), ski, hockey, skating and curling. Love it all. GO CANADA!!!

Brigsby Bear (2017 DVD): ‘’ Brigsby Bear Adventures is a children's TV show produced for an audience of one: James. When the show abruptly ends, James's life changes forever, and he sets out to finish the story himself.’’ I thought this would be a quirky comedy but 15 minutes in you realise that it plays more like a drama and it plays quite well. There is some quirkiness but it’s very light and I did not find any hilarity, just a peculiar adventure that unfolds slowly but surely. The pay off in the end is worth it. The scene where he visit his ‘’first father’’ in jail to ask him a question was very good. 6.5/10

John Wick: Chapter 2 (2017 Bluray): The first one had the heart, the brain and the brawn. This one had the brawn and only the brawn. But what brawn it was. Had I ever seen such a brawn? Who knows! What does brawn really means at this point? John Wick is a fucking badass, he walks in a room filled with weapons, exit room and kill bunch of people. Repeat. Plus, he doesn’t have a wife anymore!!! OMG! But he got a new dog so that’s cool. No depth was added, no character development really, just flashy, silly and catchy action. It was fun but it does not make for a great film. It does NOT, I say! 6.5-7/10 (Mina: rate it too)

The CLoverfield PAradox (2018 Netflix): Let’s break it down. Acting: from acceptable to mediocre. Cinematography/special FX: From awesome to children TV show quality. Story: From interesting to completely stupid. Dialogues: From cliché to boring. Overall, I have to say that I still had a good time watching this because it made me laugh as it tried to be serious and it held a few good ideas. I liked the look of it all but it also tried too much to be like previous space movies that had their success. The ending was…. indescribable. 5.5/10

Altered Carbon: When I saw the trailer for this I had a semi-broner (brain-boner), it looked like a futuristic episode of black mirror that could be directed by Terry Gilliam. I watched the first two episodes (with much difficulty) and rather found a mix between Hercules: The legendary journeys and The Matrix 2. I want to give this show a chance but it’s hard to find its qualities. I’ll get back to you on this.

Yes, it has been Stone. I'm still trying to wind down. Once again, I haven't seen any of yours. Two of mine :

Brokedown Palace https://moviechat.org/tt0120620/Brokedown-Palace I found myself surprisingly drawn into this drama of two high school girls facing the nightmare of being imprisoned abroad after being exploited by a con man. I really liked Bill Pullman as the attorney struggling with this Gordian knot which spanned years. He came across as human, real, conflicted, impassioned. 6.5/10

Cold Creek Manor https://moviechat.org/tt0331468/Cold-Creek-Manor I really don't understand this movie's low rating. I thought it was a taut little thriller with an entirely plausible premise and some good acting. An entertaining watch. 6.5/10

reply

Cold Creek Manor I saw in the theaters back in the day. You seem to like movies that no one else likes. Am I right in this ??

reply

No, you're not.

Ok, you saw it " back in the day." I guess I'm supposed to infer from that you didn't like it. So what? Just about every movie lover on here has encountered a flick they consider underrated and have liked. Entire threads have been devoted to the topic. Your comment is especially weird because just off the top of my head, I can think of several movies you and I have agreed on, namely Wind River, Hombre and The Possession.

reply

I would have given Cold Creek Manor a 7/10. I should have made myself clear. I have a tendency to give certain poorly rated movies a higher rating. I thought you may do the same.

reply

[deleted]

Brokedown Palace was petty good. I saw it as a cautionary tale for young people traveling abroad for the first time. Claire Danes and Kate Beckinsale made a great duo.

Cold Creek Manor is absolutely worth watching. Not the best movie, but by no means bad. I'll give it a 6/10.

reply

Yes, some very good chemistry between those two, pretty much epitomizing the power of 'friendship love.'

reply

I saw Cold Creek when it first came out.
I really didn't like it at all from what I can remember.

I think for me there are just too many of these movies out there.
This one didn't stand out in any way. IMO

reply

Kind of curious about what exactly you mean by " these movies. "

reply

A movie where a family , usually from the city, moves into a new house in the country.
Then are terrorized.
Most of these movies involve some sort of ghosts.

The other ones often have the local people not wanting them around.
So they try to chase them away.

reply

Maybe you're thinking of House on Haunted Hill and 13 Ghosts, which seem kind of similar to me but this was not that kind of movie. I don't see it as fitting into a pattern of proliferation. I guess it could be categorized as what some call a " popcorn movie, " just basic escapism, entertainment.

reply

Haven't seen your either. Is Cold Creek Manor a ghost/haunted house movie?

reply

I actually wondered that myself when I decided to give it a look but no, it's a psychological thriller.

reply

Ooh, I like your review of The Cloverfield Paradox! The way you broke it down was entertaining.

As Time Goes By (1992-2005 UK TV series) Lionel (Geoffrey Palmer) and Jean (Judi Dench) fell in love years ago at the time of the Korean War (keep in mind this series began in 1992). They lose touch due to a lost letter, but 38 years later they meet again by chance when Lionel hires a secretary from Jean's secretarial business. Dench is wonderful, as always. She and Palmer have good chemistry which makes this a great series. I enjoy this series because it is a true sitcom - it's the different situations and the characters' response to them that makes it so much fun. The production values of the first series are not up to par, but if you stick with it I think you'll like it. 9/10

Frasier (1993-2004) I'm making my way through all the Frasier seasons and I'm up to season 4. I missed most of Frasier on its first run because it was broadcast on my bowling night (also why I never watched Friends during its original run). I haven't had broadcast TV for years so I wasn't able to watch reruns. Besides, I'd rather watch episodes in order. Hilarious series, one of the best comedies of all time! 9/10

reply

Thanks, I'll try to do it more often then!

I know Frasier was big back then but I was too young and never catched up with it as I did with Friends, years later.

Broadchurch (2017) Season 3 - I thought the story line was a bit preachy and almost like a public service announcement in places. Still enjoyed this UK crime drama. 7/10

Possessed (1947) - Joan Crawford was nominated for a Actress Best Oscar for playing a woman suffering from schizophrenia who becomes obsessed with a man who wants nothing to do with her. The plot was a bit far fetched and I thought the ending was weak

Out of the Past (1947) - Robert Mitchum plays a PI who is trying to escape his past and run a small town gas station. A very good movie with plenty of twists and turns in the plot. Kirk Douglas is also great as a mafia figure. 8/10

The Asphalt Jungle (1950) - Probably the best film noir movie of them all. Sam Jaffe plays the mastermind behind a heist which goes off as planned until bad luck and double crosses causes everything to unravel. Good performances from Louis Calhern, Sterling Hayden and James Whitmore. 8.5/10

The Naked City (1948) - A narrated film noir covering two NYC detectives as they investigate the apparent suicide of a young woman. Solid all around with a largely unknown cast. 7/10

Kiss Me Deadly (1955) - A 'Mike Hammer movie. One of the worst movie I ever seen with a plot which is hard to follow and a very bad ending. The whole premise of the movie is never explained. For some reason this has a 7.7 rating ?? 5/10

reply

Great movies this week hownos.

I agree with most all of your ratings.
Out of the past is very good.

I've only seen Kiss Me Deadly once but don't remember it being as bad as you said.

reply

Out of the Past was very good - first time seeing it.
The Asphalt Jungle is my fav John Huston film. Love the Sam Jaffe character.
Kiss Me Deadly reminded me off The Big Sleep - hard to figure out whats going on

reply

Asphalt Jungle and The Killing have similar themes.
Both are some of my favorite film noir movies.

reply

Sterling Hayden in both I believe.

reply

You are correct.

reply

Kiss Me Deadly is on yt in good quality

reply

You picked my curiousity with The asphalt Jungle, haven't seen any of them though.

reply

Agree with you Cloverdale it was a mess.
I will wait to see you final judgment on Altered Carbon.

reply

I don't know if "Cloverdale" was intentional or not, but it made me laugh. And it was a mess.

reply

I haven't seen any of the ones you watched. This week I watched:

Fifty Shades Freed (2018) 7/10
The Animal Project (2013) 7/10
Touchy Feely (2013) 4/10
Boynton Beach Club (2005) 7/10
Me Before You (2016) 7/10
Ride Along 2 (2016) 7/10
Fish Tank (2009) 9/10

reply

I thought Ride Along 2 had the same pattern as Ride Along and did not add anything worth my time. 5/10

fish Tank looks pretty good.

reply

No Man's Land-2001- A war movie about 2 soldiers. One Bosnian and one Serb.
They are trapped in a trench in between the two fronts. In the middle of no man's land.
Oh yeah, there's also another person in the trench who is booby trapped.
A superb movie about the ridiculousness of war. 8

DownFall-2004. About the final days of Hitler in his bunker. Mesmerizing movie. 8.5

The Cheaters-1945- A family take in a homeless man during Christmas.
A nice feel good movie.- 7

Wings of Desire.-1987- An angel falls in love and wants to become human.
One of my favorite movies ever. 9.5

Key Largo- 1948. Might be my favorite Bogart move. Him and Bacall make magic again.
Throw in Edward G. Robinson and it's perfection. 8.5

None of yours this week SK.

reply

Whoa 45, 87, 48 just made i to my list of what to watch next

reply

The Cheaters isn't the best but it was kind of a fun screwball comedy.

Wings is just amazing.

reply

+1 on "No Mans Land." Great movie. You would probably like the book "My War Gone By, I miss It so."

reply

I'll have to check it out.
Thanks

reply

I think I saw bits of No man'S land on TV. It looked good.

Wings looks like a great German movie. Haven't seen any of the others.

I almost bought Downfall recently but chose Joyeux Noel instead.

reply

Joyeux Noel is another great movie.
Can't go wrong with either one.
Bruno Ganz playing Hitler was as good as it gets.

Just realized Ganz is also in Wings.
Didn't hit me until right now. lol

reply

One is planned, one is accidental, but we really are on the same page this week SK!

The Cloverfield Paradox (2018)
When you smash elementary particles together terrible things happen. Coincidentally, the same thing happens when you smash a random movie with the Cloverfield “franchise”. The silliness on the station was fun, with the arm and the lady in the wall, etc. But it looked like a made for tv thing, and felt so as well. And the husband on Earth bit was just pointless uselessness. Nothing special and not nearly as silly as to make it proper fun for this gal. That final monster tho, LOL.

John Wick: Chapter 2 (2017) Disclaimer: I’d forgotten I didn’t care much for John Wick: The First One
Assassining is some fancy ass shit, yo! And everyone and their mum are in on the action! Here we have Keanu failing to be convincing in English, Italian, Russian _and_ Sing Language. He’s just not that good with language I guess. But what he’s good at is shooting people. Which is all he does. Why was this movie so boring I ask? The dialogue was uninteresting, and I don’t find shooting people in movies all that exciting either. Keanu is good at the martial arts, there should’ve been more of that. Also, why is Hollywood trying to make Ruby Rose a thing? She isn’t “thing” material. I liked the neon colours though and that they made an efford in the world and mythos building (even if it was stupid IMO).
Points deducted for still not using Baba Yaga properly. Baba literally means gradmother/old woman. Stop appropriating my culture wrong Hollywood! Unless the Russians were being sarcastic and weren’t really afraid of John Keanu, but making fun of him. Final score: 15 out 87 angry babas. And a 5/10 just for you SK.

P.S. He not only DON’T HAVE A WIFE ANYMORE, but HE DON’T HAVE A DAMN PHOTO ANYMORE EITHER!

reply

Ah geez, your reviews are such a delight for me. Although I had to google a few things ( Ruby Rose, mythos and Baba Yaga)

You made me smile AND laugh so thanks for that, you win honey.

yes, we are pretty much on the same page BUT I loved the first John Wick. Still, it's cool to see that we even have similar sentences in our reviews. Cheers!

BTW, I saw some Bulgarian athletes at the Olympics and let me guess; your name ends with the letter A?

reply

Ah, I think we all win from this review-off! Your's weren't too shabby either.

Now that you've googled Baba Yaga, do you think it was applicable to John Wick? It's a little thing, but it bugs me soo much! lol

First, are we going well in the Olympics? Are _you_ doing well in the Olympics? I haven't watched any. Second, yes my name ends with an A. All three of them actually. Seems most of our female names end with an A...

reply

Your not doing too bad. 0 medal but, not too bad. We have 16.

I don't remember the mention of Baba in the movie. Sorry.

I bet there is also a N, a O, a V and most probably a K in your name/last name.

Is MinaVladimir related to your actual name? If not where does your nickname come from?

reply

If it's not gymnastics I don't expect medals lol. Congrats on your 16 though! Helps that you live beyond The Wall... :P

All four, and a few more! Are you psychic?

It's not related, though it's kinda close to my name. The Mina bit I mean. It was my user name on IMDb. I got it from a vampire name generator when I was a teen (long before Twilight was a thing. I just want to clarify that.) I liked it so I used it and now I'm used to it.

I wonder too, I know StoneKeeper is you rap name (is that what you call it), but what is it related to?

reply

I stole it from my older brother who is a computer geek and used it online.
I think it comes fom a super-nintendo game that involves music playing trolls that protect some precious stones.
It also had a link with the fact that I was stone most o the time.

Fascinating huh, Lyudmila Stankov?

reply

It is quite interesting and a sweet place to take inspiration from. Unless you wanted to piss you brother off with stealing his nickname haha.

That would be StankovA. I am a lady after all ;)

reply

But why would your last name be affected by your sexe? Unless things are different on your side of the world.

reply

Our names work differently. They are basically possessive nouns, and since my language has grammatical gender last names have a female and a male variant. There are some exceptions, but that's the general rule.

Our middle names show that you are a child of Ivan, for example. So in English that would be Maria Ivan's (daughter) or Petar Ivan's (son), but in Bulgarian it would be Maria Ivanova or Petar Ivanov. And then the last name, which is a whole thing in itself, but works similarly.

Do ya get it now?!

reply

Clear as mud. 😉

reply

HA! We know what we're doing, that's the most important thing. lol

But the confusion seems to be widespread since Hollywood writers (and not just Hollywood) keep giving slavic female characters male last names! It's a pet peeve of mine and I do go on about it lol.

reply

I know. Glad you could see that it was tongue-in-cheek fun.

reply

No "misunderstandings" here, amigo!

reply

Ok but do you write your middle name all the time or it's just a bitrh certificate thing?

I may confuse middle name and last name.

In my example, Stankova would not mean the daughter of Stank because its the last name and not the middle name? Or does it?

Quite complicated but other cultures interest me a lot.

reply

You use it often enough for forms and documents, things like that. I shouldn't have even mentioned it! lol

Is she Russian? 'Cause that's a whole other can of worms lol. But no, it wouldn't mean that. The last name is just a family name. Like, you had a grandfather a long time ago that was named Stanko and it stuck. Or a profession your ancestors had, like Baker and Smith in English. Mine comes from a physical characteristic. Things like that. At this point though it's just a family name like you have in any other place.

I don't think I'm making this any clearer lol, but the general rule is, if it's a woman the last name ends with an A. In Bulgaria at least.

Or, you could just read the wiki on it lol:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bulgarian_name

reply

No, that was actually clear and helpful.

My name also comes from a physical characteristic: William Strongshaft

:)

reply

Are you related to Liam Neeson?

reply

Nop,

but I've met him and beleive me, I wouldn't want him in my family.

reply

watching "Waco" miniseries now, I got no life, tried to grasp the plot of "Interstellar" but fastforwarded through some parts of it because it was too long. I need a life though, think i finished 3rd season of "Bojack Horseman" and watched the Simpsons crossover with Familyguy again, haven't seen it since it came out.

Also trying to catch up with "Mr. Robot" but the characters are starting to annoy me.
