This is definitely a plot hole. The car was a big part of season 1 and 2 when it got a Cobra Kai paint job. In 3 it's completely gone and Johnny drives the ugly van instead. There's no way his character would drive a van over a sport car.
It's like if the showrunners thought losing the dojo to Kreese meant he couldn't have the car anymore.
They could barely make Vietnam look believable, I don't see why they should have bothered with that.
They were just setting up a plot point for the upcoming episodes.

There's always an excuse and in the end this is like the 10th historical series or movie taking place in renaissance or medieval England where there are black lords and ladies. It's all so tiresome.

Gimli.
He was a cross eyed clown for most of the movies. If at least he shined during battles, but all the hero moments were given to Legolas. Dwarves are supposed to be fearless fighters against bigger enemies. Gimli should have had that one on one troll fight instead of Aragorn.
The problem with Arwen is that Liv Tyler was supposed to become a huge star back then so Jackons needlessly stretched her role across 3 movies. Her name appears in third place after Elijah Wood and Ian Mckellen during the end credits which seems crazy nowadays.
Hollywood has tried and failed to mimic the LOTR trilogy.
The Chronicles of Narnia, The Golden Compass and the Hobbits are all examples.
Only Harry Potter succeeded, but it's still far below LOTR.
The big difference between Bilbo and Frodo is that the first merely viewed it as a magic ring that allowed him to disappear while the second knew from day one that it was the Ring of Power. I think that made it a lot worst for Frodo.
The Fellowship of the Ring is the most accurate to the source material. It's also the one movie with no cringy scenes such as Aragorn's fake death or the Pirates of the Caribbeans winning the battle of Pellenor Fields.
But, The Return of the King is the one with all the payoffs set up in the 2 previous movies. It also has a very satisfying ending that takes its time to send off all our beloved characters after nearly 12 hours.
