Mary Sue.

Beth remind me a lot of Rey (Star Wars).

They're both invincible, orphan, almost no weakness, got loved by everyone.

Why everyone hate Rey, love Beth?

reply

Invincible? Beth lost multiple games and dealt with alcohol and drug abuse. I wouldn't consider her a Mary Sue at all.

reply

"Invincible" is not a precise word, I just want to say she is really unstoppable.

She beating a world champion.

reply

I hate Raffi

reply

Do you have a problem with every character that beats a champion in movies or only the female ones, incel?

reply

Almost no weakness? She has drug and alcohol addiction, which are 2 things that never go away completely.

reply

Drug and alcoholism are two most cliche in movies and TV, even Iron Man deal with more interesting weakness: narcissism.

reply

Beth is no Mary Sue. What a strange thing to think. She had all kinds of struggles. Chess was the only thing she was almost perfect at.

lol you have no idea what marry sue means.

beth got on top by a lot of effort and evolution. she learned to play chess with one of the best, she got her ass kicked several times and she had to study, learn, train to overcome each obstacle. even more she required help from others to be able to overcome those obstacles.

ray mastered the force with zero training, beth didn't just woke up one day and said "what is this? chess? i'm the best chess player" comparing the 2 is highly illogical.

reply

There are difference, yes, Rey has zero training, Beth has little training, but she beat a chess teacher as kid!

And almost everyone love her (beside foster father), and rich (for her age and sex, she can buy a house!) , and the most important: pretty.

reply

Little training??

Literally years in that orphanage, nothing to do but play chess and dream about chess at night as well? She arrives at the orphanage in 1957 and wins her first trophy in 1963.

I'm not sure how can you say "little training", have you EVER trained for something several hours EVERY day (and night), for several years (around 7)??

Now being pretty is a problem? WTF? And yeah, of course people would love her when she is pretty and good at what she does, plus a rather nice person, why wouldn't? She was "rich" (if being able to buy am ordinary house means "rich") because she won a lot of competitions, that was her only income.

reply

When Beth ask Quick Chess Guy (I forget his name), do you dream about chess at night? Do you remember his answer?

Everybody does.

Yes, she has training, everybody does, yet not everyone can win like her.

reply

of course not everyone can win like her. some are better than others. though she got her ass kicked, several times. the russian dominated everyone for years, was he a mary sue? the russian kid almost beat her. was the kid a mary sue? beny (the quick chess guy) literally humiliates her when they first play.

again you may not understand the concept of mary sue.

a mary sue would win without training, without having to overcome obstacles. that makes her a not mary sue.

winning doesn't make her a mary sue.

reply

So, what you said is, if a character check a lot of requirements of Mary Sue, as long as she/he doesn't fully... entirely... completely... to check one requirement, she/he can't be Mary Sue.

reply

ouf, no.

The Mary Sue by definition is perfect from start to the end. She beats whatever outcome without needing to be trained. Ray was stronger than Kylo in force with zero training. She instantly knew how to pilot The Millennium Falcon without ever piloting a spaceship in her life. She was a master in lightsword combat with zero training. Do you want me to continue?

As long as the protagonist is shown learning, training, overcoming obstacles, failing and coming back that's NOT a Mary Sue. That is a normal character. And of course in all (mostly) movies the hero, the protagonist wins.

What makes the protagonist a mary sue is not the win but the journey (or lack of it thereof) of the character.

You can look at Mulan (live action) vs Mulan (animated). The live action one IS a mary sue, the animated one IS NOT a mary sue.

reply

The definition of a Mary Sue character is..

A Mary Sue is a type of fictional character, usually a young woman, who is portrayed as unrealistically free of weaknesses.

A character doesn’t fit the Mary Sue type just because she is female and a genius in one thing. Besides the main character being female, how is this type of story any different from Good Will Hunting and Billy Elliot? Beth’s skill at chess was the whole story. As stated by posters above, the story also centered on Beth’s weaknesses. Apparantly in the book, she was supposed to be very unattractive too.

reply

Then, agree to disagree, I don't go full completely 100% definition, for me her training is a joke.
